Publishing 101: Is Publishing a book Worth It? (Money and Writing Wise)

71

By Rebecca E.

This is one of my most favorite topic between my writing friends, I think we have this debate oh, about every three months or so, mostly after the rejection letters get to much for one of us, and the question comes up is publishing anything really worth it???

#10: Because all writers want something, anything published, it's a genetic thing: We all love to be heard and to be recognized and loved for what we do, it's a human thing, and don't get me started about the money you can make.  We can make money with our writing but how mcuh you make and when is up to you.

#9, The World Needs Writers, and Writers need the World: No, not something grandiose, but there are some days when a good book and a nice hot chocolate will do just nice, and frankly for me kindle won't do.  A book is a must, and the publishing industry is a huge business.

#8 Without Good Comedy Writers whose work is published, there would be way to many episodes of the Apprentice....:I can't watch reality shows any more, unscripted and annoying, give me a good comedy or a classic movie, all written and published by honest to goodness writers.  In other words writers are a dynamic and creative force.

#7 I didn't want to work outside the home so I'm working more inside the home. I think this is one thing that confounds all writers, we need to work for a living, but as creative people.  Part fo what publishing and writing does is to make businesses online and offline grow.

#6 It's cool to have a name on a book: I just forgot how long it might take, years sometimes, but it's cool. I can be the next Terry Brooks, or better yet...   The point is that most writers dream of fame and money.

#5 Writers are creative beasts, and we love the idea of Random House or St. Martin's Press Loving us: Really we do, not because of the money, not really honestly no, kinda sorta maybe, we want fame, we want to have the next Harry Potter Series, movies for us!!!

#4 It's not about the money really it's not, I can book myself under my own real name in a hotel still:  but gettinga steady stream of income is very important, and shouldn't be under estimated. Yes, it isn't about the money it's about the writing, but the problem that people do forget is that there is some balance to it.  Make enough that you can survive on your own without help.  if you can't, then take steps to be able to do so.

#3 I can write anywhere even at a World Series game,  ( Or in my case and NHL game) by the way... who won the game?  I was writing:  If you love writing guess what takes the most of your time?  Writing.  Of course when you do get published then the writing and the time when you were awake late at night are all worth it.  So worth it.

#2 Because we all want to be on a book club list.  Maybe even a Letterman's top Ten, or on Saturday Night Live or something where we can show the world our book, and love doing it.:  Because as writers we all want some sort of recognition and value and hey, face it with Oprah soon gone, well there's always Letterman.  Or reading hubs, with so many cool people here why wouldn't we?

And the number one answer for is publishing worth it?

#1 Because in the end... Publishing a book is SO WORTH IT!!!: whatever your reasons for publishing... whatever your goals, publishing a book or anything is so worth it.

There you have it the top ten.

I'm going to publish a Hub every other day for the next two weeks about all this. One of the HUBS will be a definitive focal point for anyone publishing an ebook. I expect expertise from everyone who has published an ebook.

s0126phoenix--- this sometimes, is true for people.

motorofans-- this is true as well, sometimes it does, but it is a personal thing, if you have the money to be able to do this, then you should, but if you don't....

Rebecca, thanks for the tips - I have read several of your hubs and I wish I had before going the self published route with my first book. I am trying the more traditional way for my second book and am currently underway in that process and am grateful to find valuable resources like your hubs and the ones you have linked to help me out!

Hurray bravo! what's the book entitled?

loriamoore 2 years ago

Hi Rebecca,

My first book just released and I was very lucky to get it accepted by the first publisher to whom I sent it. I am very happy with the publisher experience and wouldn't have known what to do on my own. Several friends of mine are also writing books, but they're all going the self-publishing route.

Well this is my very first post on Hub Pages and as my aspirations are to write a factual book, then I guess a hub entitled "Is publishing worth it." For me always a big yes because such an achievement would be huge for me.

I was born in the middle of the 1950's and am of the view that it was a fascinating decade, a story of two halves the first of poverty and trying to turn around Britain after the second world war. The second witnessing some of those successes of the early 1950's.

When I write my book I want the views of the people that were passionate about that decade and my theme will be community based.

I should be very pleased to hear your views on my aspirations and whether you share my view that the 1950's were a memorable period of history.

You are absolutely right Rebecca and I love your hub.

The satisfaction of being published is great in terms of validation.

As for the money, I donated to charity every penny I made from my 8 books published so far and I intend to do the same if I make anymore money with the books I am working on.

Great hub. All good points made about why we write. I can relate mostly to #4, 7, and 10. I have no desire to publish a book, unless it's a short memoir of my life as an Innkeeper.

Yes - I have several pseudonyms on a number of published books, and the feeling is as you say. But St Martin's Press and Random House (not to mention Warner Brothers) only love us because of the money, nothing else. You are only as good as your last royalties statement. If anyone here knows the feeling that comes with comparing royalties statements, put your hand up.
