10 Reasons to Write Better: Writing... And One of Them is About Making Money?
6910 Reasons... To Write Better?
Why do we as writers write? I sometimes think we want money or something else, but really it is to give something back, advice, or helping others with relationships, or fostering them with readers.
I admit sometimes it is about money, and sometimes about improving our own writing, but really most people write and begin to write better because there is a big reason for it. They learn about the thing known to us as content.
I love reasons, and I love to list them, as often as I can, so here is the reason list ten reasons to write better. it's and either for yourself or for others, and they are in no particular order. Just "tossing them out there."
Actually Care What You're Writing About: Sure I could write a hundred different hubs but if I don't care what I'm writing just trying to get them out there, they won't be good. I also think that writing about what you know at least something about is important, yes you can have a differing idea, but if the writer of said hub can make a good argument, and you can see the passion in what they write then, we can say you know what you're writing about and you care. This means writing your best and spell check once in a while ,(trying to go back and fix mine...) the most powerful hubs will be evergreen, but they all share one thing: passion and caring, and voice and everything that makes a great writer. Or as we can all say right now: good content.
Making the Reader Want to Read: This is a simple one, but for some reason hard to get. We all want people to read our hubs. Sometimes we get lightening in a bottle and it works, and sometimes we get the greatest hub in the world and no one reads it. Make Your reader want to read it. If you get comments and reply to them it will work even better. Part of what makes the reader wan tot read is, repeat after me Content. Content. Got that Content. A Few backlinks certainly won't hurt, but Content is a major factor.
Sometimes It IS about the Money: Sometimes, I know, it is about the money, you get what payed for. If it's your freelance career or your writing career what is a better reason to write better than a bit of money? sometime, yes it is about the money. You need to walk a fine line with this one, but by working towards a goal, then you are going to end up getting something: usually money. if can combine a great content rich hub with a small ego and money, then it will work for you.
It's not about Nothing: Only on a comedy can a show be about nothing, your writing must be, for the online world, content rich. Same as with the "normal" reading world, which is bit by bit going towards the electronic print. It also means that you are thinking about what the reader wants, or what your audience wants. ESP is helpful but not needed. Understanding is far more important. Just look at content and ask "Is this something I would read again and again? or is it something I am doing for money or for fame or numbers?" If you can't answer these questions it is time to Not publish.
You can Fool Me Once... But Not Twice: If you don't know say so, but don't every think that people won't figure it out. Dohn121 pointed that out very well on one of my other hubs, you can say anything you like, even in fiction, but don't expect people to come back, so work on becoming a writer So when you take some time and care about the reader, then you might find some good news coming your way.
If you Assume that the reader is Smarter than you, you'll write better: This is simple. I believe in writing to an audience who is smart, well read, have millions of idea, and are frankly smarter than I am. This isn't a downer, but a way to motivate myself. Editing better working on my hub longer. Thinking about comments. Interaction with others, and of course improving my content. One negative comment is worth more than you know, provided it's not a personal attack, and that they have a great point. It is vital to writing better to find out where things aren't going right.
People will thank you for it:I go back to some of my hubs simply to make sure they sound better. I don't mind doing this so long as it helps others. if it gets a better google rating as well, that would be nice. (thanks to the commenter that "google" is spelled that way) Admitting your mistakes helps, and while don't bend in the wind being a bit flexible can make you be a better writer. By default this means you write better.
If you don't write better, you'll never get better as a writer: It's about the challenge in this one. You need to write long hours each day to become a better writer, and you need to write better to make the effort worthwhile. Take Duchess O'Blunt or Dohn121, they must spend more time on their work... well, I spend a lot and i think it's getting better. so you want to write better it really means going back and doing it again.
All the books in the Universe won't help if you don't write: You can spend so much money on how to books, but if you don't write, you'll never get better. One of the challenges of writing better is well, writing. Boy can we come up with hundreds of reasons why we can't write on this day.
Relax, Have a Bit of Fun, and Remember, it is Writing Better and Publishing... well you have written a hub right?:Think of it this way, when you write a hub, or when you publish it and comment on it, people will notice and will see you published something. Face it it may not get you noticed by google or Random house, but you can say you are published, you could even call it self-publishing. But still it is fun writing a hub and it does help you write better, so why not try it with your own work?
There you have it, ten rather large reasons to write better, now what do you think?

This was really awesome one..especially for someone like me..who is new to hubpages...thanks.
Hi Rebecca-I must have missed this hub. Writing better is such a powerful motivator. I love your voice!
PS: I think I got the Seinfeld reference up there. :)
cool hub
My goodness. Another person who thinks I have to put effort into my hubs. The next thing you'll be telling me is that I have to do honest research and use my spellchecker. I'll have you know I have been writig crap for years and I am very good at it. You have no idea what all that work you suggest will do to my manicure. Humph! ;)
I am finding more and more here on HubPages that writing longer is better. We write to a writing audience here, so we can excerise the writing bug to our hearts content and receive acolades for it (if it is worthy).
However, writing for blogs and other places on the net do require that we keep it shorter. Typically people "scan" while on the net rather than "read". So I can understand the requests that are being made of writers. Sorry, I don't like it either, but it is a fact of life - except here.
am being told to dumb things down, only use vocabulary appropriate for a reading age of 12, not to "offend" readers with my academic background
Eye right pritty gude !
I really like this Hub. You have some very good points. Thanks for putting this up. It is great for all writers to read. I know I definitely have to work on my writing but I am getting better every day.
Thank you, Rebecca. You're very kind.
Nicks, isn't this something?! I posted a comment on another hub earlier today (http://hubpages.com/hub/Three-Quick-Tips-for-Impro and gave J Conrad as an example of a great writer in English for whom English was a second language. So we both thought of the same thing! :)
I didn't think I would compare myself to Conrad, though. He was genius! (Which I'm not) But thanks for the comparison. It feels good :)
ClaudiaP - check out Joseph Conrad who is acknowledged as a 'great' writer in the English language (Heart of Darkness, The Secret Agent etc.). He was a Polish sea Captain with English (obviously) his second language - so there is nothing to stop you being equally fine. Maybe someone knows his secret but I suspect that a large part of it was down to perseverence and an ability to tell wonderful stories. Are you any different?
Thanks for the compliment, Rebecca. I worked for some years as an English teacher in Romania. And as a translator. So, I'm fluent in English, but still, English doesn't flow out of me as naturally as Romanian does.
I like to read and write, in both languages. And I love the hubpages community :)
Thank you, Rebecca. I do want to improve my writing and this is not an easy job, with English being a foreign language for me. So, from time to time, it's good for me to be reminded of some reasons and get motivated again. Thanks for the reminder and the encouragement!
"All the books in the Universe won't help if you don't write: You can spend so much money on how to books, but if you don't write, you'll never get better"
Another well written piece Rebecca. I especially liked your take on writing to an audience that is smarter than you. That is very similar to my life's philosophy and my writing.
Very good advice, and as all the other hubbers pointed out, I too appreciate the point about readers being smarter than you are. I am always humbled when truly good writers comment favorably on my hubs, because I don't consider myself a writer in the true sense of the word. Thanks for the really good advice.
Good advice, well written. Thank you!
Helpful as usual. :) Thanks.
Shouldn't it be "Ten Reasons to Write Better"??? Instead of 10???
As one of the premiere former News Directors John Sorell, who passed this year (2009) always stressed, "just tell the story." When writing, narratives, reporting, ministering -hermeneutics, just tell the story, clearly, directly, and as creatively if possible. That makes for the best writing and reading.
I appreciate your point about readers who are smarter than the writer. That's something I'm going to take into consideration. Writing and letting people read my writing is such a humbling experience for me. Thanks for pointing this out!
As usual, you have sound advice for fellow hubbers. There has to be passion and focus on the essential essences of one's own life experience. Happy holidays, Rebecca!
I do think it shows through when a writer is not passionate about what they are writing. Plus, it is no fun to do the writing. On the other hand, even a starving artist needs a certain amount of money.
Information was helpful, there is lots to read here, which is always good when you're learning something from it good job.
"to everyone-- what you've said is so true-- wirte write and write some more, and i think if we let the readers feel that they are samrt they will come back."
Yes, let the readers feel smart is a good way, We are doing some good things in our life if we do this as who knows that they will top the world or any big group at one point of time in writing field.
Good advice Rebecca E., I agree that writing a lot and continual reviewing your work will help you write better. I would also add that you should read a lot as well. Reading will improve your writing skills if you read any type of work with an analytical eye.
I find that the more I consider the reader when writing, the better my work becomes...at least I hope so!
I love your instruction to consider the reader more intelligent than yourself. Great tip!
As always everything you say is helpful and informative.
Your best advice about writing more and respecting the reader’s intelligence is great.
Writing can only improve by writing; no books or manuals will ever make someone a writer; talent, hard work and continuous editing WILL
Very helpful, interesting & helped me to think more about my writing skills, way of of writing etc. & also amazingly linked my thought to another good topic, I will bookmark this hub & will read time by time.
The points written are fully true.
Thanks.
Well said. The point that stood out the most for me was writing as if the reader is smarter than you. So true because they often are smarter!
A lot of interesting points and very good advice. Thank you
Thanks Rebecca E. for another great hub with great reasons and ideas. Thanks for sharing. Blessings to you. creativeone59
I've been an avid reader for around 35 years before beginning to write something. And the more I write the better I become. I hope. Practice makes perfection. But the greater help comes from comments. We work to express what we have inside and feedbacks are needed to see if our message is arrived right. And when positive they lift us as nothing else, right?
Beautiful hub.
I do like your comment on writing for intelligent readers! On another site, I am being told to dumb things down, only use vocabulary appropriate for a reading age of 12, not to "offend" readers with my academic background, ideally keep to 400-500 words because "people don't like to read more". I have been feeling intensely frustrated.
I'm not sure if I could've put it better myself, Rebecca! Awesome tips and way to get down to the bones about writing. There's no secret potion like with Harry Potter--J.K. Rowling spent years writing her Harry Potter series--mostly on napkins at at cafe (because she was so poor). Writers write, right?
Wonderful hub yet again! Thank you.
