Allow Me to Pull Out Mine Hair: The Make Money Craze (The Giving Advice and Other Matters)

By Rebecca E.

Really Money Is...

You want to make money, and you've spent so long staring at the computer you've got quite mad. This is understandable. It is not an easy thing this "making money online." In fact you are probably spending most of your time pulling out your hair.  They do not call it work for nothing, but still, you wanted a business, and you wanted money, and you are pulling out your hair! (so much for e-commerce...)

What? You hair? Tell me that you have some left! It's not that bad, no really it can't possibly that bad. You have choices out there. You don't have to be a website owner. You don't have to make money online.

You don't--- but you want to, so you spend many hours pulling out your hair in an effort to make money online. the point is that you can make money, but it is not, as many will suggest something that you can do by simply adding links to your work.

I would suggest that in this business you need one thing which most don't care to think about and that is time and the proper links to your websites and blogs. first let's have an example, more how not to do/or should not do in an effort to make money.

money online? you're crazy.
money online? you're crazy.

My own hair pulling history

it's really not a joyful story but I'll tell you exactly what my business plan was about 4 years ago when I started my online business.

"To make some sort of money online"

That was my plan. Looking back I was so pleased and thought all I needed to do was write a blog, and add Google AdSense and the money would come pouring in. I was wrong, very wrong. I also know hindsight being as it...

What I needed was a kick in the pants or better still to go out and act on what I was planning. This meant really I had to begin somewhere, and surprise of all surprises I did this on my blog... I Used Google AdWords. Now, before you all go and do what I did I'll actually tell you why I suggest what I suggest now. (Note to readers: Do not do what I did to make money... seriously... the next bit is what not to do.)

I used Google AdSense and Google AdWords together in hopes that I would make money online. Big mistake. I didn't use the Keyword tool, except to find out what keywords would do the big earners and get traffic. I also didn't use an research in terms of these keywords. I simply picked a few earners to target and went with that.

See the problem?

If You Do Not.. Allow ME To Explain

If I had actually bothered to do a bit of looking I would have known four important things:

1) My blog was new, and anyone who has been blogging for a while can tell you... it takes a long while to make money, and that money doesn't always come quick. Since I only picked big earners as keywords, I also didn't understand the rules of "AdSense" which is competition is huge with "big money keywords." Also, point: Google AdWords program is where you create ads, and SPEND money to make money on your website. Just so we're clear.

2) I was a newbie, and didn't understand the fine art of keywords, SEO, linking or anything else really. In fact I am still learning the fine art of SEO, keywords, linking, Google and just about anything. The fact remains that rules always change. I have lived through an algorithm update... twice now, in fact.

3) I spent money, thinking I would make money: Google AdWords is a great program, but, and this is a big but!, you have to know what you are doing. It can cost you a lot of money. Fortunately I had Google AdSense on my blogs, so it made a huge difference with the balance, still I didn't understand I couldn't simply pick and choose keywords.

4) I tried learning as I went: This is okay, but this is also a problem. You had better mean business when you are spending money to make money. Unfortunately I didn't mean business. At that point I didn't even add links to my blog posts. (You can stop laughing now)

See, my not figuring out to add links to make people look through my blogs I did myself a disservice since frankly, most people will not look hard enough to find where you put a link list-- or your profile for that matter.

So What Changed?

I did.. so did my wallet. I was one of the lucky ones and didn't get caught up in to much debt. At the same time, people questioned, and rightfully so my ability to make money, to write, and mostly to learn from my mistakes.

I am glad for this experience, and it made me learn the value of doing some very boring, and more importantly free things. I think the reason why I push the idea of actually having a business plan, which is detailed, and linking to your websites and blogs is because of my own experience.

I will also say that it never hurts to try new things. For example, spending time learning the art of the keyword tools that are available to you to learn about keywords, and what they can do for you will make a big difference.  (There are many otu there, including Google AdWords keyword tool, and SpyFu keyword tool, to name a few-- but think when you see big numbers.)

I also have learned money does not come fast, and more likely you will spend money. in fact I have found that if you do spend the time building traffic and creating valuable content, while diversifying your places where you write, you will see more success.  it just takes longer.

It is simply not relying on one or two sources where you make your income. This does mean at some point you go back to the basics, but then you have to move on.

Your Own Hair Pulling Experience

I think that the reason-- the main reason people have trouble with goals, or end up "pulling out their hair" is that the expect too much too soon-- be it money or followers or traffic. The other thing they expect is that things will not change.

The biggest thing I had to learn, and learn the hard way is that the foundations never change. You know write great quality content, provide value, and then over time, when the rules change and you have diversified your work you can "stay safe."

The problem is that "stay safe" is for only a limited time, once you have the foundation you need to move onwards, for example once you learn about inter-linking, you need to learn about linking outside your website, then you need to learn about the types of links (dofollow and nofollow) then you need to learn about keywords and how to choose your links correctly for these keywords.

Except, that you are probably like I was wanting everything fast-- and wanting what took years for people to build. You also probably want to do so with a smaller timeframe, or without losing money.

So, whatever your own hair pulling experience might be, understand this: It does take a while to make money, so do not get caught by the money craze. Nothing in life is fast.

Money Crazed

  • Nope--Don't Make It!
  • No
  • Was... I know Better
  • Yes-- I think that million is right around the corner.

Money Craze--- Why That?

The word-- on money craze. I know that people have horror stories about starting their own business, or making money online, but really what it boils down to is that when you begin you are money crazed. (A more clinical description would be obsessed) You will do anything and everything to get rich.

Unfortunately some never learn. It takes time to create a good hub, and it takes time to do the keyword research and it takes time to promote and add links to your blogs and websites, but no one really, deep down, when they begin want to here that. They want to here that they are the best thing to happen to e-commerce since... (insert company here.) Sorry, online or offline the world will not help you unless you are willing to work.

So, once the reality hits you, go on and stop pulling out thine hair and start working....

To your success.

Rebecca- Thank you for sharing your experience and candid words. Seems many on here will tell, but not share HOW they are finding success. I have no idea or clue about keywords and uses and what not. I am not here solely to earn money, but would be nice to begin to head in that direction. I am disabled, so any extra money would be nice, since I am writing anyways. Any tips on a good site or blog to read up on keywords and use.? Ty for any help. -Paul

Good advice - I will try not to pull out my hair so much. Although I think I learned fairly fast that earning money with Adsense is a slow process. I am still learning keyword research, but it has been an amazing journey. I hope someday it turns into something more. Until then, I will try not to worry to much!

Writer Dave-- sounds about right, it seems mine did that as well, but no matter what i did not give up, and it seems that since I have made a point of original content, you can say it is a huge thing to have your own blog, and be pleased with it.

Thanks for the input Rebecca, being newbie myself, with visions of earning a living through my writing, I am thankful to already understand this is not a get rich over night endeavor. Rather, I hope to spend time both studying to learn how to make this endeavor a money earning venture, and at the same time continue to write new Hubs, ask questions, and meet new people. What ever person who begins a venture needs to know to succeed is that they need to be persistent, consistent, and resilient. "Winners never quit, and quitters never win."

Bible Studies- if you have teh money-- that's a big if, you might get something out of paying for your information, however teh free sites do have something to offer, but you will be required to do more digging. I think that if you find a really good basic hub which explains something that will help you.

So, long sotry short-- go with free but ask, like you did, questions.

Rebecca, my experience has been strange. I started my very first and only blog (a personal blog discussing a wide variety of things) on April 5, 2008. The first three months, I averaged about one click a month. Things got so bad, I closed it down for six months and opened it back up in early Feb., just in time for the new Google algorithm change. Since that time, I have averaged nearly $200 a month on that blog. I make far more on that blog than all the revenue sharing sites, in which I participate, combined. I simply am at a loss for words to explain it. And things seem to be climbing ever more insofar as unique visitors to my blog. I guess the main lesson here is just this; don't give up. Although I did give up for about six months, I came back at the right place, and at the right time.

Great advice Rebecca. If only I could get my act together to put even half of this together. Hope you don't mind me poining out a couple of typos. Towards the end you put a couple of here's when you meant to put hear. too much debt otu instead of out -I also didn't use any. Also like me you often forget to type capital letters at the start of a sentence. Please feel free to delete this. I certainly appreciate your brilliant hubs and only want to save you some time editing later. Voted up and useful. Wish there was an exremely useful category.

All wise advice. Thank you. I do work hard on writing, research and promotion. I have not been doing so badly. My work is all my own. I am not buying in PLR or anything like that. Disheartening them to see I am losing up to a 1000 viewers a day recently. Can't figure why. Another mystery to unravel.

I'm just an aging hack, Rebecca. I can write a bit, but I could never become the kind of techno-geek it seems to take to make money this way. It was so simple back when. I used to get 10 cents a word: all day; all night. I used to syndicate a couple of columns which paid several times over. Big Fat! This adsense is fun but a financial joke. I enjoyed reading your hub...a bit like Etruscan to me, but enjoyable. Glad you are back and running on all cylinders again. Bob

The problem is where to go to learn about key word research, SEO, and the like. It seems like I run either into highly expensive courses that want you to pay an arm and a leg, only to find out the information is already old. Or I run into a bunch of blogs and articles that keep you bouncing all over the place without ever really giving you any substantial information. Of course the million dollar question, Who to actually listen to?
