Make Money With The Amazon Associates Affiliate Program: It's Easy, (Sometimes)

Amazon Affiliate Program

The amazon affiliate program on hubpages, or on a blog or website has its many benefits, but also its many low points as well it is a bit of market research coupled with a lot of luck. In terms of money or of time, it is by far something I didn't put much thought into until recently. It really is simpler than google AdSense, but results on it will vary. ( In terms of money or success)

I began on hubpages and I focused mainly on google AdSense, which admittedly worked well and I didn't focus much on the amazon affiliate program I signed up for it of course, and placed the capsule for it in my hubs, but for the most part, it remained in the back of my mind. Success with amazon wan't an issue it was a capsule and nothing more.

I had read it took a long time to find success with amazon, but still I placed a capsule in each of my hubs, but didn't focus too much on it. I didn't forget about it, and didn't check on my earnings too often as well. This was not something I did but rather as what I felt might help others in thier journey to earnings success.

Until This month.

So I'll do the How to Put Amazon on your Hub, and then why and where you should do so.

It's not a haystack, but it may seem like it....
It's not a haystack, but it may seem like it....

The simple problem for my own writing and my lack of success with amazon was this: I focused on very general keywords, say money or writing. I didn't originally take the time to go through amazon itself with an organic search to find the books which might be more to what the reader of my hub needed. Yes I know plenty of time and research but really it's the best thing to happen for amazon and my success.

Keywords are great, and I still use them, but often they are too broad or come up with some books which really aren't good for the hub I am writing. Readers want content, and again like anything else, content is king, if a readers wants a published book, and you have it on you hub, then they will get it, but you need to do the work for them, hence know a bit about keywords and how to get some good content from amazon.

So here is how to do what I just talked about, placing an amazon capsule on your hub:

1) on the top right hand side when you are in "edit hub" on your hub you can click on the amazon button

2) Next you will want to click on the edit button on the amazon capsule.

3) It will give two options: Keywords or Product codes. Pick One.

4) Decide How many products you want. The range is 1-10 products which amazon sells. Then either get the product code and paste it in or type the keywords you want.

5) Hit Save.

You are done.

In Keywords, amazon will pick books (or which ever product it has) out based on the keywords you type in. In the product link, you'll need to go to amazon and get the correct codes for your products you intend to showcase. Now for the where and why. You can also choose what type of product you want from everything to some small things.

Where:

I try to place my amazon selections somewhere where people will find them, I've found that if they are placed too close to a google ad or anything else of that nature people will pass over them. Also try to place them close to a part of your hub where you are trying to make a point.

That is dependant upon you, but I do find that if it is close to text but away from photos or links more people will "see" them. Most times it is because the products have a picture beside the link.

The idea is similar to the Google AdSense program.

Pick your keywords and products with care, if you are writing a hub on say finances or money, then having books about art or history won't do. People will click on a book to look at it when they need it not the other way around.

Also have a varied list, so that if people go to different hubs or blogs of yours they have some choice. This is the where, easy to find, colourful and of course based on your content on your hub or website.

 Now For the Why:

Depending on which person you read some have more success with amazon than they do with Google AdSense, and the reverse is true.  Reading some of the hubs on success with amazon one thing seemed to "pop" up--- the products that the hub offered.

I began to think why do they have the success that they do:

I believe that they spent some time on amazon itself, and did what we do on google began to type in keywords from their hubs, to see the books which would come up.  This is also known as an organic search, it does take time, and, once I began doing this, I found a lot more success.

Keywords are great but I've found that on amazon, when you write a keyword, you might not get the type of product you are looking for.  This is when you can ask, why will people buy say a book that won't really help them when you've put it on?

People might click on a book to see what is offered but they won't buy the book which is what you want them to do.  So, this is where a bit of questioning what people need from your hub, then push this into the amazon capsule will help get the traffic and the clicks you need to make some money on amazon.

Why do you want to do this?  Another stream of income from a hub.

It does take longer in some cases, but really it is just a bit of traffic a bit of time, and most of all luck.  Yes, amazon is easy to put into a hub, but you need to know the other two parts where and why, or at least the basics of it.

I have been on hubpages less than a month. My Amazon tracker says I have had over 1400 clicks but still no sales. I am wondering if this is normal?

gemsong-- it's all part of the hub, and if you have time, you can do it, but if you aren't too big on it don't worry ;)

I suppose I should put more thought into what products that come up, but sometimes just writing the hub is exhausting. I know, I know.... do more research. ;)

So far my best bet with Amazon has been outside of hubpages. But I never thought about the keyword link between Adsense and Amazon. Good food for thought!

Thanks for such a concise and useful hub. After 9 months hubbing I have only just started using the Amazon feature as I did not realise how easy it is.

Yeah, I've only sold about seven items off Amazon. Maybe I must do that organicky thing you mentioned to have more success.

Good information. I've acutally been more successful with Amazon versus AdSense although I like them both. You can almost always find a related product to include on your hub and as you said, the photo draws people when you place it correctly.

Happy New Year!

Good hub Rebecca. I've tried both ways but definitely it's better to decide which product to promote. I wouldn't like to promote any low quality product to my readers. Whatever the money to earn. Actually nothing anyway. :)

I too have decided to concentrate on my Amazon sales beginning in January, I know I could do a much better job of picking out selective items to sell. I have relied too much on Amazon's keyword choices. Thanks for this hub, the timing is great!

trose-- that is my line of thinking now as well

tiptopcat--- yes, for some of my less busy hubs or ones that are for specific things, one or the other works better.

It is great to be able to have a choice of using Amazon or Adsense. Depending on your topic, it is sometimes better to concentrate on one or the other for better results.

trose 2 years ago

I agree with you. If you plug in keywords and let Amazon pick the products, they are usually not the best products available. I like to choose products I have had personal success with or those with high ratings and mostly good comments on Amazon. Great hub!

Good advise Rebecca. I just need to figure out how to get to my affiliate site on Amazon. Got it all set up and now I'm stuck! Can't get back to see how I'm doing. It's on my "to do" list.

Great helpful hub, Rebecca. So far, I've only sold a total of four books with the Amazon Associate Program, mind you, some were over $100, so it was big deal. Product hubs solely geared to buying the product your pushing should be placed in your hub, in my opinion. Relevancy is the key.

Thanks again, Rebecca. I hope you have a Happy New Year!

Rebecca E.-I've approached hubbing the same way, utilizing AdSense without initially considering amazon. I may be fairly new, but with the help of your hub, I'm going to check it out.

Thanks.
