Hubpages and Competition: The Good and The Bad
68Healthy competition and Online Money: The Thoughts of People
Is there such a thing a healthy competition when it comes to working online? Is there such a thing? You can focus on one aspect such as making money: this can often turn into an obsession, but the key to this is that you need to think of competition in both business and what it can do to your health.
Now, please be aware that this is in the knowledge and education section and not hubpages, so... as they say a first time for everything. Knowledge and education are a vital part to how you perceive competition as well. You need to learn the why and what before you can move on to the how. ( with anything really, money, Internet, relationships, writing you name it you'd better know why you're doing what your doing.)
So in terms of competition I'll say this right now. Yes I believe that there is such a thing as good competition, but I also believe there is such a thing as bad competition. I also believe in aiming high and in success for me and others, so there you go. I'll list a few examples.
Competition in making money and business: Now this is a good thing in terms of competition you as a business person can not be so naive to believe that there isn't competition at all in this world. Yes one shouldn't believe that in business you can not have people to work with you, it is a bit of a good thing, you need more social skills, and networking skills and relationship skills but...
It's also a bad thing when you become what I like to call the "greedy balance." Not everything is about making more money. Not everything is about having more money today than the day before or making the most money possible.
I would say that competition is a given is many types of business, but for the person who competes with no target and no end, I would say that they face a harder road. This would affect them in terms of relationships, and in terms of learning useful knowledge.
In business it is good to have a bit of a competitive streak otherwise, you won't do well in business in terms of success, relationships. and of course the money to continue. Of course i can talk about balance but that is another hub! Still, one needs to compete even with themselves to succeed in any business.

Competition in The Online World is also okay, for the most part:Now it is never good on your psychology to think that everyone wants the same thing as you. This is never the case especially when it comes to the Internet. If you don't believe try writing a query on google on a subject and see what comes up. If you think that each site is about community this will end up giving you ulcers.
Social Networking sites are about community, but also, they are about the spread of information. You need to spread your information, but to do so in such a way that distracts from the fact that you need others will result in a lot of headaches. In other words, you can become too focused on one aspect of your work, or your business, and then willf ail with the money.
In fact Social Networking is the best of community and relationships with people since you can "connect" with them and share your ideas and of course knowledge of a subject ( as in your hubs.)
Not everyone can be number one.Set a goal when you think of your hubs, write them with an end in mind, but also set some goals for each hub you have, and for how to network them. The point is to begin with a fine, good quality hub and then go from there. Sounds a bit like competition? Well for some, learning more than what they know about a subject is a bit of a competition and it might not be a bad thing. This is a business, and we need to mentally win something.
In terms of knowledge and education, you need to educate yourself on the movement of the Internet. You need to have knowledge on: keywords competition and SEO, but you also need to know about Google and AdSense, but also traffic and how it works.
If you compete too much the knowledge you seek will be harder to find, and people might work against you. This is about relationships and developing them to the best of your ability.
Is there such a thing as healthy competition?: I certainly hope so!
Not in a negative sense but within oneself, trying to improve the foundation you've built. I can at least say that I always want to better myself, in writing and in networking and in commenting. I want to be the best writer I can be.
Of course this does not mean to me that I back stab or otherwise hurt another to get there. It is something like a relationship, you get what you give and you also get what you need in the long run.
So, in terms of competition what should you aim for? more knowledge, and more improvement towards your goals. If it is money, or relationships, or a better following, you need to mentally prepare yourself for it.
Competition, is therefore for healthy and needed and will improve your own knowledge base. To work on our work and make it better. To learn from others. So yes there is such a thing as healthy competition.
The unhealthy style of competition is the one we should avoid, it is the one which makes everyone else miserable in its wake. If you find one whose sole goal is to be negative and cruel, let them be. They will force you to compete for your sanity, or for your work or for hundreds of other draining things.

Great information and great hub.
With regard to writing hubs, if I see that another hubpage writer has written anything similar I generally link that one to mine after asking permission. It often gives another perspective or fills in some additional information giving anyone interested in the subject more to read. I think that the main competition is just trying to better one's writing skills and there are so many helpful people here on hubpages willing to help.
Rebecca - I worked for about six years trying to build a greenhouse business to viability and I saw the effects of competition each day. I learned so much about market share and how to set realistic expectations. I also saw you have to differentiate yourself from the pack to succeed. I believe that to be true on Hub Pages as well. To me it is about building my brand, one that is synonymous with quality, and to be dependable in assisting others to better themselves. I have no need to be better than everyone else, I just want to be competitve as far as my ability to thrive at whatever I choose to do.
Thanks for another quality hub!
An interesting, unique Hub. I enjoyed reading it. I agree it could be good or bad but we should have a goal in mind when writing. Thanks for explaining to us. Regards.
I have been reading your hubs. They are very interesting. It is my wish also to be free lance writer . So far I have been involved in highly structured writing, mostly highly technical. Just now I am starting this. I will be reading what you write. May be I can get some ideas from you. Thanks

I really don't think that we should compete against one another, but should help each other by commenting, reading each other's hubs, and adding links to link to other people's hubs that we find relevant and fascinating. Being helpful is the key and you are certainly an advocate of such, Rebecca! Thanks again!
Rebecca...great hub...I especially like your quote:
you wrote"You need to learn the why and what before you can move on to the how."
That is so true of absolutely anything we take on in life. So much of success depends on our attitude and more...our motives. And competition is a big one...ruthless competition is the reason so many find disillusionment when they finally make it to the top of their field or craft because they end up there...alone.
Very good hub and may we all take it to heart.
Blessings to you

Again a very insightful hub, Rebecca E. I enjoyed reading it and glad to see I'm in the majority with my vote. Cheers
Hi Rebecca - sometimes you can drive yourself insain with the ideas of competition. Like Pamela said - it could lead to obsessiveness. I do tend to compete with myself - always trying to be my best but the problem with this is that I tend to beat myself up when I cant reach higher realms.
Hey... my problem here! lol
Good hub again x
Rebecca, I like this article and I think some competition is good as long as you don't get obsessive with it. Competition pushes me to improve the quality of my writing and that's a good thing. Good hub.
I certainly believe there are positive aspects to competition. I think it can bring out the best in ourselves, and force us to look inside to see what is there.
I love sports, but I don't like to believe that for every winner there must be a "loser," This is often the lesson of organized sports, and I think it can make us ugly. Competition can help us set goals and achieve them, but the flip side can be ugly if not kept in perspective.
Very good read as always!
At the end we're always competing with ourselves, and as you rightly say there is good and bad competition, it pretty much depend on how we see it. The important thing is to know and accept that sometimes we win and sometimes we loose, that's life; what matters is if we have done our best.
Very interesting hub,rated up. :)
Like everything in life, there is always good and bad in everything. Healthy competition requires personal discipline in keeping it reasonable. Unhealthy competition drives one to the brink of the crazies trying to win. The best competition comes from within oneself to better oneself without defeating the purpose. The latter is one which I believe in. Thanks Rebecca for another great hub!
I think competition is good if it provokes you get off your duff and do something positive.
I know you get tired of hearing "another great hub", but it is true. I compete against myself, I've always known I could write, but this is my first attempt publicly and until I feel satisfied of my skills I feel I have no business competing against others. I also agree with mywebs; stumbled and digg always give me brain damage when trying to share, but I keep at it till it's done. The outside social networking has increased my traffic which is increasing my hub score. So I just follow you lead and continue to learn and earn. Thanks again for sharing
I tried to add rated up as always and stumbled but stupid internet was acting up for me.
I like this hub a lot. I like how you break down healthy and unhealthy competition. Another well written hub and you won't be getting one of my dreaded emails either! Well done Rebecca.
As always great hub, I believe in a good healthy competition in business just as there is in sports, you have to be a humble winner and a gracious loser.
My Moonshine...
This is great! I am one of those who believe in competing with yourself. I do not believe in comparing yourself to others as everyone is unique in his own way. Betterment comes from improving on your flaws and mistakes made, not proving you are better than such and such. Excellent points!
Thumbs up! Rated up and Stumbled!
Kisses, care bear hugs, love, light and infinite blessings,
your sunshine,
Al
Competition depends solely on us..it should make us become better at what we do not only better than someone else.If somebody is really bad(competition wise) it doesn't mean we are good
Can we be competiting without even knowing it? Or maybe someone is competing with me without even my knowing it? Wow the thoughts that go through my mind at 9am in the morning.
Great hub. I really think competing with your brother and sister, unless playfully is wrong. I think I believe this. I'm sure I do-says the man who sprints against his brother and sister on bike rides. However- sometimes I "go" too early knowing I won't win. This is two-fold. I'd like to better myself- maybe that's number one in my mind. The next in going early is that I'm not just using my brother or sister but I'm also giving them a chance to use me.
It's funny- my bike riding/racing- I don't want to "drop" my friends but I don't want them to drop me.
The biggest thought to keep in mind is -absolutely- the Golden Rule - in all matters.
Let's love our neighbors as ourselves and help them do the job they need to do. Let's do ours the best we can.
The LAW is the GOLDEN RULE in all matters. It's the law.
Very interesting points raised. Thank you.
to explore our mind is good aim joining this competition and also great become a winner. We can measure our ability and our knowledge about some topic given to us.
Rebecca - I really like this hub and the way that you defined competition. I believe there is a time and a place for good healthy competition. I am always looking for ways to improve myself, gaining knowledge and being open to learning new ways.
You did a really great job writing this and explaining healthy versus unhealthy etc. An all around very interesting topic and great read. Rated Up!

Ghost my friend, you are one in a million :)
Competition? Whaaaaa? I don't compete with anybody--I mean come on now..who really wants to compete with a spiritual warrior with a rubber chicken farm? That's a no brainer!
Very nice hub Rebecca, very thought out and to the point.
