Rules In Life: Money and Writing and Getting Out of Debt
72Writers and Debt: Money Issue
I am a writer. By definition this means I have no real break or holidays. My money and my income ( my business) depend on me and if I slip... well my finances do as well. It isn't bad really but life as a writer does take time when dealing with personal finances.
Want to make money fast? There are plenty other ways to do so much faster than in the writing and publishing industry. You could probably make more money with hubpages some days. You need to be focused, and income is slow, and the publishing industry is notorious for being equally as slow, it is a business after all.
This is about personal finances, writer style. When you have debt, well it is debt death or no more business or writing. Which for writers is death anyways. This can also be used by others but as the focus is for writers, it is kept to their creative juices to pay the debt down.
Debt and Getting Out of It: There is the easy way and the hard way to get out of debt. the easy way is not to get into it. Face it, now in these days that doesn't happen much. So the next thing is make money to bring down the debt.
Increase that Income as they say. Pay down high interest credit cards. All great in practice, but....
Sometimes you cant even make enough money to make rent, so what next? This is easy, pay the rent, buy food, and put something on each of your credits cards. Oh and no ready made dinners. That's called luxury.
Starbucks coffee? Not a chance. Movies? No. Dining out? Not yet. A lot of hard work and writing? Yes.
I think of my friends, we all had debt at one point or another, and face it, when we need to go shopping to get out, that is an addiction. Don't go shopping if you are going to spend. That's the hard part, is facing up to the fact that you made the debt, and you need to get out of it.
What ever is left over, put it towards your debt. Keep that job you dislike, and find reasons to like it, for now. Dreams will come, but like writing and money, they take time.
I don't Have a Job (or a variety of reasons there):I am a writer, that is one of my jobs, and that needs to provide me with work. Hubpages is a good beginning, but there are other ways to get writing jobs, work as a freelance writer, and find freelance writing sites. Yes, writing is a job.
If you love movies, I know of a place that can put both in play, work at a movie theater, which sometimes offers free movies to their employees.
Libraries are wonderful thing, not only can you get rentals on books and DVDs, but it's free... unless it's a overdue book.
Still, in these hard times, I won't suggest that there are many jobs out there, but if you look hard enough something will come your way. it just takes time, until then go through your personal finances and see what you can cut, Not everything, but cut out things, that you should this list includes: high speed Internet, movies, eating out, ready to eat food, gym club memberships, ipods, iPhone, malls, cable, books, Starbucks coffee. And more.
Even cutting back ten dollars to pay debt is good, it's not much but it's a beginning. just find what you can cut. Cutting is important but that is one part. Don't blame yourself for getting into debt in the first place, but focus on the extras you can do to make a few more dollars each month.
Hubs, Ezines, Squidoo and Blogs: While this might not seem a whole lot of fun, this really means a couple or a few extra hours at the computer, say in the evening or morning. Still for the writer this is a good source to look at. This is important since when you write and you want to write, well it does promise a bit of money.... Or does it?
Many people who read hubs or lens or online articles, aren't there to pay you, but some just might come. But be warned this won't get you a lot of money to begin with so don't quit any job you might have at this point.
Remember that google and amazon and other online affiliate programs can change the rules at anytime, so you might have highs and lows, which aren't much fun. So the more you get your name out to the world the better... but this means extra work for you.
Plan to create something that makes you one dollar a day, and this way you can count on at least $30 a month to begin with, of course, when you get teh money put it on your credit cards. Ever bit helps.
Remember balance is the key so also plan to publish books and anything else during this time. Even if you get an advance of $500 dollars it is still money that you can pay down a credit card or a phone bill or something else.
This sounds boring, as you've worked hard, and deserve a rest. We all do, but you've got so much debt, so as the old saying goes "all work and no play..."
Break Out of Debt, and Make Money Doing What I Love In
See results without votingPay it off but have fun: The biggest thing I learned during my time in debt was this: cycles. One person can cut back on everything, never go out, and never have fun, and then have their debt payed off in couple of months ( I exaggerate, but the point remains).
If you pay it off and then find yourself burnt out and wanting to treat yourself, you will go back into debt. So, I set goals, write say two articles or a few hubs each week and then McDonald's as a treat.
As my debt goes down my goals become higher and then I give myself more things, but a better treat, say make ten dollars from my writing in one week, and write two more hubs, and fix up my blog, and then off to IHOP.
It grows from there.
Beware of one thing, no goals and a lot of treats breaks this method down as well. Don't know what to pay? pay something small, a overdue fee from a video store or from the library. Or, pay say $20 more than the minimum on your credit card bill. One thing that did help me a lot was to focus on the small things, and then make my writing work for me.
Work on getting traffic online, work on making a bit of money and put some effort on your other jobs you might have. All this is time, but it is worth the effort.
IT takes longer I know but as writers it is a slow process. So take time and energy to do this and you will find not only your debt has gone down but your writing and your reputation has gone up.
Keep writing and publishing.

Thanks for the article, Rebecca. This has me thinking more about my own motivations as a writer.

One thing is for sure and that is writing is not a quick or easy way to make money. But then, I suspect, that most creative actions, almost by definition, are less well rewarded than conventional work. The trouble is that if writing is a passion (which it needs to be) then it is hard to concentrate upon anything else and put it to one side. A conundrum for us all...
DROP THE DEBT! *wink* x
Love your reward system! Everyone does have money concerns! Your encouragement and ideas are all right on target! I budget best by keeping less than $1 in cash in my purse and using only a debit card - no credit cards. Does it always work? No, but it helps. Thanks for a great Hub. Best, Sis
I write because its fun and I enjoyed your hub and thanks for the advice.
Great advice for everyone!
Great Hub Duchess, thanks for all this fab info!
I write because I'm an addict.
Rebecca, I enjoyed your piece very much. Writers have to eat, too. In spite of the fact that writing is an art, it is also a business and we would be fools if we did not take time to learn all aspects of the business that includes personal finance. Keep hubbing!
All great advice, but I'll only add one extra rule. That is, once you free yourself of that debt get yourself into a position—and it may take a little time—to where you are living within 80% of your means. I call it the 80/20 rule. You live on 80% of your NET, not gross, and you sock away the other 20% for a rainy day. It's a harder thing to start, but once you get it going and follow through, down the road it gets easier. And you can apply this 80/20 to nearly everything. Especially big purchases. Say you sit down and figure out that you can afford a $25,000 car. Start looking at $20,000 cars instead. If you can afford to buy a $200,000 house, start looking at houses for $160,000. If you can afford $1,000 a month rent, start looking at apartments charging $800 a month. Part of the idea of having money, is spending efficiently, living within your means, and having something set aside in case something goes wrong. Done right, you may not even have a need for a credit card.
My Dearest Becca...
I am amazed at how quick your mind works! I am more amazed at the degree of self-confidence and faith not only that you have, but that you instill into your readers every time you write a hub like this one. Yes, writing takes time, yes, publishing may be slow, but you know what, Becca? You are in the winners` list! Why? Because you want to succeed period! Never let anything come between you and your goal, you can slow down, never give up! Debts? We all have! All around the Globe, you know? The secret here is: Gratitude and a Positive attitude!
Wonderful Hub! I feel stronger already!
Warm blessings to you forever!
Al
Hi Rebecca, since reading your latest rendition I have felt suicidal and would have you know if I could swim I would throw myself off a bridge - any bridge! Come on my dear, why on earth have you written such a trashy piece? You can, and have done, better stuff than this. The reason I am on your alert list is because I really enjoy your spin on life, but this latest missive certainly takes the biscuit.
Rebecca, I write for my muse. I have earned a living in many ways and am curious if this will work. Regardless, you have an interesting point of view, I remain curious about everything and so you have it!
The life of the writer is a simple one. One way to get out of debit is not to get into in the first place. Also if you want to be a writer educate yourself. I knew what I was getting into when I chose this for myself. Oddly I lost my job and I took that as a sign and I felt a calling. It's hard life, but I love every minuet of it.
I think these days almost everyone needs more money, and if today someone is fine it doesn't mean that next month will be the same. Politicians are very positive, here in Italy they "earn" (?) 20.000€ per month so probably it's easy to be positive.
The reality is that the Credit Crunch is far from over so good advices are always needed. I think the great majority of hubbers do not live on the money earned here but I'm sure that writing on hubpages I will make money: I'll become a better writer giving me a better chance to publish a real book, I'll clarify my thoughts, hone my abilities, it could even happen that a publisher read my hubs and contact me. There are many possibilities here and many people, like Rebecca, ready to help fellow hubbers to become better writers. So my opinion is: writing on hubpages we will make money, some day. :)
Having said that I've read many hubs written only for money, this one is written to give good advices and if some money comes then it's just right. Both thumbs up Rebecca. :)
Rebecca, congratulations on addressing a topic that MANY writers have to come to grips with.
Yes, writers love to write, but writers still have to pay the bills. Sometimes that means we have to write for the money and there is no shame in that! Many people on HubPages do exactly that, it certainly does not take away from their ability to write.
Your practical approach to debt can be applied to everyone and is well done!
Thank you Rebecca, I find it great that you are thinking about the nowadays very widespred problem of debt and how to solve it with article writing. A great launch !
A great hub, it got me thinking and that is good. I write because I didn't think I could. That's the main reason and if I can earn a bit of money my goal is to pay down our debt, to help my husband get closer to retirement without our debt. Writing also has another benefit for me and that's it keeps me home and then I don't spend money. It's all good.
Rebbeca, really enjoyed this hub and the comments left. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Nothing worse than debt hanging over yer head, good advice as always Rebecca !
I suppose I'm too young to be in debt (I'm 20) but it's an interesting thing, how one could plan and pull something like getting out of debt using simple, yet brilliant methods. I can always count on learning something new from your hubs, Rebecca.

Good advice, Rebecca, and encouraging for all of us writers! I will not give up! So glad you are not, either! I am the type to write late, late into the night, (or would that be early?) but if it means I get to write, I am happy! thanks for sharing!!!!
Rebecca, you've helped me via email to understand a bit more about my own particular niche and situation. For me, it's not a debt thing. Rather it's a matter of needing to feed the ministry through helping the homeless when and however. I learned a long time ago that I cannot singlehandedly solve the homeless problem. Wish I could, but since that isn't happening, if I can do something each day to make a bit of a dent somewhere then at least somebody somewhere is a bit better off today than they were yesterday.
I as many, love to write and making a few bucks on the side can't hurt. I aways appreciate your hubs and your advice. Keep doing what you do best, tell it like it is. Godspeed Rebbeca E. creativeone59
I thank you, Rebecca, for your great help and well written hub. I enjoyed reading it.
Great advice, Rebecca. I don't know anyone that is in some form or another in debt. There certainly is hope if only you're willing to make sacrifices and be realistic of your goals. Thanks ever so much.
Rebecca, I write because I love it and I do need some extra income mostly for medical bills. Thankfully debt itself is not a problem and I think I would have to have to have a paycheck I could count on, as I worry when in debt. I wish you much success in your writing.
I have no idea what you are talking about? Why do we write? Is it for money? I have no understanding of this? If we write for money then we end up writing pieces like this... I'd love to know who your perceived audience for this hub is? You have written some inspired hubs but my thought is this, if you have nothing to say then keep quiet.... a disconcertedly patronising piece. What were you thinking of?
Thanks Rebecca - always good advice.
