Fix It 202: When to Leave a Hub Alone or Unpublished on Hubpages. Save Before You Publish!
69Sometimes, It is Fine Exactly how it is.
This is another great request, but it is also something that I have touched upon a few times in my hubs, but haven't gone into details. Well now is a very good time to do so, details are a part of this online business. The question is how long should you leave a hub alone before publishing it, for all of hubpages and search engines to find?
This is a business and we all want to showcase our work, sometimes it is a good idea to leave a hub alone for a day to look at it again with different eyes. I do this myself so I will say I am partial to writing a good hub and leaving it be-- for a few days until the over all content is better.
This does not mean that I will make money on a hub by leaving it unpublished for a while, but more to gain a perspective on what my writing should be like. It also helps me to "see" what others might find. It gives me the time to expand on a hub that needs help. All before I publish it.
The length of a fine hub
How long Is Just right? Now this is a topic I have debated for a while, but really, I believe that about a day or two is long enough. It gives perspective on what the writing says. Of course you need to hit save unpublished to get this benefit. Also by writing the whole draft ( the text part) you can see how the text has developed.
I also put all the capsules I am going to use together and simply write the text and add a picture and then I hit save unpublished. I do not add links or books from amazon until the next day. I also use the preview button with care.
This allows for a sense of how the text looks as I have typed, more often than not I can even "see" more mistakes. The important thing is to add the links I am going to use with care. That usually takes about 5 minutes for me to add, but then I also have a lot of hubs to choose from.
I do go and spell check after I type everything out. Then I leave it be.
So... how does that help me? This is a good question, you see by leaving it for a day you can re-read it and look at it as a piece of your business and not as the writer of this "wonderful" hub. If you think that there might be a link that should be added, and you want to keep traffic coming, you need to do this as you have it unpublished.
Also, it gives you the chance to maximize your traffic, as most people-- hub followers-- will only look at a hub once. You also want them to share it with their followers and get the word out on a very great hub. This is a new feature, and it is very effective, since If I like a hub, I can hit "share it" and then push the "share it with followers" button and this can maximize traffic and also sometimes links and money.
When you look at a hub a day later, you can "see" things you might have missed. A key point, a keyword you wanted but did not add, which links are the best based on this hub, and also it give you a chance to push a hub quickly through social networking sites after you have edited it. Also I can see if I am heading in the correct direction as even when you save unpublished that hub score can go up and down, if it goes down you still have time to fix the problems.
You initial traffic is important, as you need to make a good impression and you can always find a few mistakes which you missed by doing this.

Fine but I can have it edited later on! Yes you can but you really only have one chance to do things right for thefirst group, for example you need to get links and it is a lot harder to get them later than right away. Besides hubpages is like a community of small businesses, and we all want to look our best, so getting that extra day to edit helps a lot.
It is not so much the spelling but the work involved in getting an audience to come back, sometimes the benefit to leaving things alone are really too great, if it is not evergreen content, often people will hit publish. This would apply to breaking news and your commentary on it.
Even then letting your work be for an hour can make all the difference between looking professional and not. There will be the occasional spelling mishap, but for the most part reading out loud as you write helps with that.
The balance is when you leave it for a while to check on if your hub is actually worth publishing, by this i mean have you made a plan for adding low and high quality links to your hub over the course of many weeks or do you simply want to publish that hub now in hopes that you will make money fast?
Leaving it alone also give you a chance to look at some keyword tools and make ceetain you will get target traffic long term.
If I wait what other benefits will it do for me? I think of more links to work with this hub when I leave it alone for a day. Normally I can suggest Stumble Upon, and other social networking sites to give me, say four or five instant links to my articles, but often I think of a blog post where I can include the link to a hub.
With nearly 150 hubs, I still find older hubs which need a lot of work, which would have been easier to fix then as opposed to now. I can also make sure that everything in my hub is okay and for the time looks correct.
Again checking for little things the next day also has the added benefit of seeing where this hub will head. For the most part all hubs begin at the hub score of 50, but like any business this can go up and down. Again by adding more interactive things you can create a hub where people stay longer.
How Long do your save unpublished?
See results without votingThe Last Word-- really how long you save it is up to you, but there are some benefits to saving unpublished, it gives time and perspective whereas otherwise if you just hit publish you will not have.
The most important thing is to write the hub and to get it publish, as like any business a hub needs people and links and everything else to grow. The more people see this hub the more likely you will find that you are heading in the right direction in terms of your goals.
It is important that you love what you do and that you do the best you can and that you keep writing, but also allow yourself that time to grow your business to be the best it can be. People will come back and look around to others hubs as long as you keep giving them your best and that you keep building links and great hubs.
To your success.

For awhile I was really on the ball and would write my hubs then let them sit over night then read them over in the morning . For me this was a great technique but it took more devotion than I was capable of managing later. Great pub and good advice whenever writing anything more complicated than a text
Thanks again Rebecca for the useful advice. I do tend to publish my hubs sooner than I should. If I could ask you to look at my latest hub and let me know if I have done anything wrong. It's called "Star Trek's Influence on Technology". I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me.
Thank you. I'm a newbie, and the backup section was helpful. Thumbs up!
Your advice is always appreciated. Thank you ! :)
I agree with you 100%, I often think of my hubs as I created another "wonderful" hub, when in reality I missed 10 things and when I look at it it doesn't feel right, so 24h to 48h laying low is a great way of figuring out what to change pr modify to your hub to make it work!
Great information here thanks. I always write the text first in word. That way I know I have it all spelt correctly. Then I gather my photos into a folder. My links for the You Tube videos and websites are also put onto a word document.
I get all this onto the HubPages and then I do a lot of editing at this stage too. This usually takes about 6 hours so then I publish it. But after reading your advice I think I shall save it unpublished until the next day. Thanks
Hi Rebecca,
I enjoyed this hub! It's always fun to see how other folk compose, edit and publish their work.
As a blogger who started in 2005 on a buggy Drupal platform, I quickly developed a habit that persists today:
I never, ever, compose online. I use Microsoft Word to compose the article. If I am inspired, this phase goes quickly and smoothly. If I'm merely "hacking" out an opinion piece or some fluff, I compose and edit at the same time.
Layout is another thing entirely. As you mentioned about links, Hubpage links and modules have to be carefully laid out. I had a tough time getting things just right on my Hubpages.
On the other hand, it's easy enough to toss HTML into my WordPress articles, even though Microsoft Word tries to add spaces in the most inappropriate places :).
When I have the first draft of the article, I don't sit on it. I like to preview it, proof-read it, publish it and move on.
I think that's why I only have two Hubs. The cycle is too lengthy from composition to layout to proofing. (Another thing, I'm not in it for the money, anymore...AdSense just isn't working for me.)
Cheers,
Mitch
Because of your previous hubs on this subject, and some personal issues, I've started leaving my pieces alone for at least 2 days.
Afterward, I find not only mistakes, but changes I ponder over during the "alone" time. I've rated up, and bookmarked.
You never can have too much knowledge. Thanks again for sharing
I usually do not put any or just a few amazon ads, I have a lot of hubs unpublished because when I get the Idea I start it and then come back to finish it. I have done much better getting rid of amazon and ebay ads. Thanks for the great write up.
excellent advice! very informative i enjoyed reading it thanks.

wendi-- ti even works with editing, but really you do need to leave it alone, also to see if it's worthy to be published
