Fix It 101!?: My HubScore Went Up My Hub Score Went Down! What, Why, And How Does This Mean For Me?
73My Hubs.. How to Fix Them!
This questions asked by Amez is a good one, and one that seems to drive most hub writers to distraction. A personal hub score. Now in their case, the hub score went down big time after writing and publishing two hubs. They are quite worried.
Yes, they have a right to be worried, as a low hubscore affects many things: Your traffic, your hubs, and your links in your hubs (nofollow and dofollow). Still there are a few simple things that can help with regaining a good hubscore. A good hubscore is an important part of your hubpages business. A low score on your hub can also mean that the search engines will rank it a bit lower now with the eyes focused on content farms.
So this hub will try to explain the main worries hub writers have about hub scores, or at least personal hub scores. This will delve into SEO and business, but also hubpages in general.
And you guys thought I only write about money... ha!
Hubpages and hubs
A Bit About Hubapges and Hub scores before we begin: On your avatar at the bottom of the right hand corner is a number-- it can be from 1-100. 100 is the best you can have 1 is the lowest. There is a number you need to aim for.
For the most part, the goal for any hub writer is to have that personal hub score number above a 75. This will allow you to have your links work as a dofollow (I'm not all that up to the correct definition for this, but I believe this means your links are better in the grand scheme of things.). There are ways that is score is affected. You of course are the biggest factor in the score but there are a few other things ( which you affect anyways)
Your new hubs, your old hubs, your traffic, your traffic sources, and interactivity.
New Hubs: The more new hubs you make which have a low score ( to me this is anything below a 55-- for a newer hub writer) the bigger the drop in a personal hub score you have. So if you write say 2 hubs in one day you are certainly not doing yourself any favors. I will let you in one something I do with my hubs. I don't publish them right away. I hit the "save unpublished" button. This gives me a chance to look it over a few times, and to ask myself questions before i publish a hub.
Older Hubs: These hubs should never ever ever go below a score of 60. Ever. I can go to any hub writer and hit the "more" button on their profile and look at their hubs. It this gives me an outline of the hub, and the score and more importantly when it was published. Something which was published say 10 months ago, and has a hub score of say 40 isn't going to make anyone want to read it. This also affects your score.
Traffic and Traffic Sources: I think I've said this a million times or more, but hubpages is a business and you are a writer who needs traffic for your business. You need a high scoring hub to get traffic. You can get it from other sources yes, but still if you don't have a high score, people won't link to your hub ( which means you) and help you out. Think quality and traffic then write a great hub.
Interactivity: Never think you are smarter than anyone here. (I certainly am not the smartest here so there you go) Still the one thing I try to do to the best of my ability is to be interactive. I try to comment on each person personally. I try to get conversations going and tell people I've replied to their questions. I believe this affects hub scores big time. if you aren't interactive yet, get interactive. Yes this means you go and read a hub of theirs to tell them you've responded, but still that keeps your hub scores high.
A Good Quality Hub Takes Time: This little phrase should be your guide. End of story.
Okay, fine so you want more of a story, so here is the basics, you can edit everything except the URL that you have for this hub. Now I know I make mistakes, but fortunately not too many in the URL. Still, you can leave a hub unpublished to fix it up. Except for that URL, but still that is pretty good.
Honestly, if you write a 500 word hub and then hit publish, more than likely, it will have a hub score of 50, but still you need to get traffic and that is what google wants to see. Google likes hubs with traffic, and links so work with this, but no over promotion. Now, if you were to say...
Write that same hub, but hit the "save unpublished" button, you can go back and edit things, add links you've found of and generally make a better impression than a hub of the same length but which has a score of 50. That takes a couple of days to get to-- or at least for me. Right now I have about 3 hubs that are in the not published stage so I can go back and fix them up.
Quality ALWAYS trumps Quantity.

Understand what affects your personal hubscore: Now this isn't about money or traffic it is about personal knowledge, you write a hub and no one comments right away on that hub and then ( admit it you panic!) you write another hub, your score will go down.
But, if you go and give some comments to others hubs, and generally get interactive with the people who come to your hubs, you'll find your score will go up...sometimes quickly, and sometime more slowly.
Polls or Quizzes are great thing to have on a hub, since often many people won't comment on a hub, but will take two seconds to hit a button on a poll. So that is one way to get traffic to stay but to also increase your scores.
Some thing which I've noticed is that people with hugh scores are really interactive with others. Including the ones who normally won't comment. So what does that tell you?
Traffic what? : I know This may not seem like a big thing that will affect your hub score, but traffic does affect your score. So if you have say 100 visitors in one day and then 50 your score might go down a bit.
Granted scores do go up and down for what seems to be no reason, but that should only be between 1-5 points over a 48 hour period. So beware when the score drops more than 5 in 12 hours, there is something wrong.
The other thing about hubscores, is that traffic from just one source will make your scores go a bit more up and down, so if you have 100 visitors, and they are all from hubpages, then this isn't such a great thing.
So go to the "my account" ( look at the very top of the page right above your avatar) section on hubpages, and go to the section that says traffic sources. If you've been here a while you'll find that there are a lot of traffic sources, but for new hub writers you should have at least 3 that have traffic each day.
Once you get traffic, your hubscores will stabilize more as well.
Do You Understand The Basics Now?
See results without votingSEO and Business: Now I'll say this, you'll find a few hubs which are written by hub writers who have left hubpages, but have not closed their accounts!! This is a reader beware type hub, as often times, the information has changed But also if you read through the hubs you'll find a negative bend towards hubpages near the end.
It takes time to build a business such as online articles, and you need help from learning the basics such as Keywords, Google, AdSense, and SEO. These three need a even bigger foundation, basic knowledge of hubpages.
If you don't understand what your hubscores mean and how you can fix them, the hubs themselves don't have much chance to get traffic and for you to improve your hubscore.
So...
-- Don't panic, it's nothing personal.
-- Write one hub a day and see what happens
-- look at your older hubs
--Link between your hubs
--Get interactive
-- Quality is better than Quantity.
To your success on hubpages, keep publishing!

Rebecca, thanks for writing this helpful article. I'm new to HubPages and hope to share interesting articles with people. It's also a nice place to network abd meet like minded people. Thanks again.
Bill
Thank you for sharing this informative hubs. I think I have a handle on the basics now...
Thank you for this information. I have been looking on HB for what exactly the scores all mean and it's starting to make sense. I admit I'm on a steep learning curve here. :)
Yes! Thank you for this post. I had a terribly confusing thing happen. After being on hubpages for about a week I have 80+ followers, 7 published articles, have made $6, and have a hubscore of 1! I'm not sure whether it's good or bad at the present time. lol
Thank you Rebecca E., I'll keep that in mind!- WBA
Rebecca E.- Thanks for the great advise! I'm still puzzled as to why I don't get more traffic from outside HubPages? Good idea about the polls and quizzes.-Regards-WBA
As I was just reading your reply and reading my previous comment again I noticed several typos in my comment, which only makes your point about not publishing hubs for a few days to fix things up.
I really appreciate the part about perfecting a piece an waiting to publish it. I have been trying to do this, but as am a new hubber am also to get my work published. I do think I need to do a better job on adding links to my hubs, as a way of leading to more information for my readers. Thanks for the excellent advice. You've got my vote up!
Thanks for this informative article. up/useful
Great article. I have a better understanding of scoring now. I also will take more time to read the help center information now too. Thank you
great article, lots of good information... really puts my ones to shame. Thanks:)
As long as your hubs are quality content, I don't think the amount of posting per day is significant. I've noticed though, that if I'm being thorough with posting, it takes at least 25-50 minutes to write a good hub.
My average is 1.5 hubs per hour, sometimes to 2.
Also, do-follow tags are an important part of your website marketing program. When google robots are searching through the internet, they are going through every page and every link, if its indexed to them.
The number of links you have inbound affects your page-rank positively, while out-bound links work negatively (though are less-weighted). Also, the higher your PR, the more your outbound links are worth.
Dofollow is an attribute in the tag, which tells the bot to reference this link/include it in PR calculations. No follow is not. No follow will not affect your PR, but will still generate some organic traffic flow.
Dofollow will provide positive bonus to PR and organic traffic.
I am guilty of writing more than one hub per day and publishing my hubs as soon as I finish writing them. Now I am going to refrain from posting more than one hub per day and I am going to refrain from publishing right away. As usual, thanks for the advice.
Hi Rebacca - I saw an HP link to this Hub listed on my latest Hub and realized I had missed it. What great (and useful) information. I've managed to hit 100 on several occasions but it only sticks for a day or two at the most.I'm working on improving that :) Thanks!
what is the lowest you can go on hubpages before they might ban you?
Thanks for the advice. My score dropped down to 67 today and I was in a panic. From what I read I don't think I'm doing anything wrong so I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and see if it goes up again...
Great hub. It is always good to ensure that your hubs are performing like they should.
Thanks for the great advice. Thorough and to the point.
Rebecca - You wrote simple things very simple way, but that is the most difficult - to be simple - in complex field of internet business. Thanks for sharing a good-deep- experience with your analysis.
I have genereally always managed to get traffic to my main websites but getting traffic to your hub can be a nightmare. I read this and found you due to your impressive 99 personal score, very impressive and congratulations.
Thanks for posting this hub Rebecca. I joined hubpages just 6 days ago and I was mystified as to what all the numbers meant. I now have a much better understanding :)
hub score is really important for hubbers and you hub is really helpful. This also make me understand why my score would increase or decrease.
Very helpful, thanks! I've been trying to figure out why my hubber score won't go up. Long article though (which is good), I just have to re-read a few times to make sure I got everything.
Thanks for the info!
I thought nofollow is supposed to be a tool to help prevent spammers?
what is your hub score when you first start out? i forgot?
I caught your hub on the "recommended" list on one of my Hubpages and had to check it out. You say it so well and with such clarity and direction. There's always something new to learn when it comes to HP. thanks!
Thanks for writing a great hub...ditto on all the reasons stated by "K9keystrokes". Looking forward to reading more of the hubs you have written.
Rebecca E this is a vey well presented and easy to read hub. Understanding the points of importance hwen it comes to hub scores can make or brake a writer. Thank you for a super good read. I learned much here.
K9
New to hubpages and still learning, but at least I understand what the little numbers next to my name and hubs mean now. :) thankyou!
Thanks RE- I haved made zero money to date and this was never a concern. I stayed in my own little world of my own Hubs-writing, reading but not commenting. Now, I have joined the Hub Community and am reading tips like the ones supplied by your article. Thank you. I am now following you to learn more. Cheers.
Thank you for the tip about letting a Hub mature unpublished. I usually write everything offline in Word, check it, get all my pictures together in a file, and then open HubPages, assemble the Hub in an hour or so and publish it right away. I see now how that may not be such a good strategy. I'll try doing the writing itself in HubPages and saving the Hub unpublished.
Nice one, thanks for info. Great job.
OK, so if you have a HUB that is under 60 you should unpublish it? I made the mistake of publishing multiple hubs and now my score across the board are shocking.
Love your hub, it certainly does make sense to publish high quality hubs!
Your hub was very informative. I'm still new to hub pages and learning daily. Thanks great information. Now off to learn more.
Great article...now I know what to do and not to do..
I am not new, but I am hopeless with technical terms. How can I link my hub with other hubs of the same topic? I do not know what to write on the url for linking?
Thanks!
This info was very helpful, as usual. You do give good advice. Thanx.
I'm really glad that I stumbled upon this hub! I've noticed that every time I publish a hub, my score will start to go down as much as 4 points. That has made me hesitant to write. I'm trying the "save unpublished" thing to see it the score will raise before publishing. I hoping that works. Thanks!
Hi Rebecca. I was a bit inactive for about a month and my writer hub score hovered around the 87-89 mark. Now in the last week I go really active and got some fairly good scoring hubs going. I also start following a lot of others and commenting on their articles as well as receiving and replying to a lot of comments on mine. What I noticed is that my hub score is dropping heavily and it might be due to either my following a lot of others or because I have several hubs with a similar title (they are in three parts but cover different content.
Anyways. I am taking my low scoring hubs off and am going to change the titles to reflect the content a bit more and see what effect that has.
Thanks for the info. James
Thank you for a great hub. I am still trying to learn as much as I can and this is great information.
Good job. I was about to make a post in a similar theme and went hunting and found this. I don't need to write my post now; I will just send people here.
Thank you so much for the great article. I am going to try to get more traffic from many different sources. My Hub score has steadily been going up, but my hubs have been dropping and spiking these last two days. They are starting to level out higher than they were, so this is good. I might need to restructure a few though. Thanks for all the help and great advice.
Hi, Rebecca E.
Thank you very much for the information . Now I already know I have done wrong. Thank you again
Great read! I needed this information since i'm new and have been watching my hubscore fluctuate :(
Thanks for the advice. So any old hubs scoring less than 60 should be removed? Great hub, thank you.
Thanks Rebecca for these reminders. It's helpful to review the basics from time to time.
Great information here. I need to print it out and study. I my scores bite, and with help from your great guide, I can reverse that.
I will be fixing that up!
Thank you, Rebecca E. I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on HubKarma... maybe it's a potential hub!
Thank you very much for the article on Hub scores. It's very helpful and gives me something to think about!
The subject is a very interesting question for me, and you explained it well!
Great clear information, easy to understand, thank you so much, keep up the good work. I am trying to learn more about hub pages,Ok, Yess Newbie :)
Thank you for the this hub. It is very informative. I will take the advice. I am a newbie and stuggling just a bit.
Thanks for this info. hubscore is very hard to understand. You answer a lot of the question most hubbers have on this subject.
Thanks for the information. As a newbie this hub has answered most of my questions. This is a perfect example of a quality hub.
As someone who has only recently joined hubpages can I just say thank you for your series of hubs on hub scores and hub quality. They have made very interesting (and informative) reading
More useful info for newcomers!
Great hub. I some articles and quit last summer. I'm starting to pick some momentum again. Still learning about how to make money. This piece rally helped.
how do i put little quizzes on my hubs?
And again, THANK YOU! From one Canuck to another - you rock!
Great article. But based on the amount of comments you have here everyone else already knows this is a great article. I'm jealous! I hope one day I can achieve your success!
Hi, you have cleared up quite a bit for me. I was puzzling as to just how much control I had over these scores. All writers new to Hub Pages should read this.
For all that one does all these things correctly, it has become somewhat clear over the past two months that a hub profile score, and even individual hub scores, has much to do with whether one is a conservative or a liberal on these pages -- and of course if one is benign politically, then the basics of attaining and maintaining a nice hub score as outlined here likely apply.
To sum up, following all of your suggestions results in temporary profile and hub score increases, but if your subject matter is largely conservative, it is short-lived.
Thank you for your explanation. I was wondering why is that when ever I post a new hubpage system automatically hupage score. It is kind of frustrating because it takes a while to write a great article and I get a low score. I guess that is the name of the game.
Thanks for the answers. Everything is easy when you know how lol. I didnt see those buttons there for polls and quizes even though they were staring me in the face lol
Thks again
Thank you so much for explaining all you have here. It is a great help to me as I am still learning how HubPages works.
Would you mind explaining how you were able to get the quiz into your hub or give me a link where it explains this thks.
When you say 'links' in your hub does this mean links to my own website where I advertise other stuff or links to say a phone distributor if my hub is about communication?
Sorry bout the questions but you certainly know what you are talking about and I always say ask the experts lol.
Some good advice in there thanks
Thanks. Good info for a newbie. I previously blogged on other websites, but this seems more aligned with my purpose. I think this HUB helped me a great deal.
Thanks for the pointers. A few things I do not understand is how they actually rank an individual hub. I have many hubs that share an almost identical layout, including all modules. The writing is all on a similar topic, and all are about the same length. Some are rank 50, some are 65 - even the traffic is about the same. So this always puzzles me how there can be such a drastic difference on what appear to be almost identically looking hubs, even from a unique content amount point of view.
Thanks, Rebecca! This was very helpful. My hub score dropped from an 89 to an 83 in one day.. I will take your advice and try to be more interactive.
-Adam
Ahh sweet clarity, thanks again Rebecca E. for your words of wisdom and sharing with us lost souls.
thank you Rabbeca or this information. I also felt my hub after it went up and then my hub score went down. I think this information useful for us.
Great article! I find that if I save unpublished, my hub score has time to go up before I decide to publish it. And I have time to fix mistakes. Of course, I'm often too impatient to wait.
It's a certainty, actually yesterday when I wrote the comment I had just read one. But not adding it was right given the aim of the hub. :)
Rebecca, you have forgotten to say that with a high author hubscore it is possible to publish a very low quality hub which nevertheless will have a hubscore above 80, an added benefit of having a high author score.
Other than that this hub is perfect, and as usual a must read. I've never thought about Traffic Source, that's very interesting and useful. My warning level is 90 as author and 76 for the hub, and as a matter of fact there are a couple of hubs that I find very difficult to improve, I've already tried almost everything editing around five times each of them. I think when I'll have time I'll have to rewrite them completely.
Thumbs up and stumbled, thanks for the always good advices. :)
Thanks Rebecca. Its an excellent hub and I can get informations that I can use as a newbie.
Thanks Rebecca, the more I read of hubs like this the better I become at this writing thing. Thanks very much for one of my daily lessons on the site.
I was just thinking about this and was going to look or post the questions on in the forums for an answer on the hub score thing. I guess I dont have to go looking now or post a question on it. You answered every question I had in my mind. Kind of spooky. Lol
I have learned so much from reading your hubs and was hoping you'd write about scores. Sometimes I think "they" are just messing with me! One thing that REALLY puzzles me is that I have several unpublished hubs whose scores change frequently. I have unpublished hubs with higher scores than some of my published hubs. This seems just crazy to me.
We would add one thing: expect fluctation in the score on each Hub, particularly those with a lot of activity. We have one Hub that moves between 85 and up. It has been 100 at least once. Don't get too worried by these movements. As you say, the onces to worry about are those in the 50s or below.
Thanks for another interesting Hub.
Rebecca, you've done it again.
You have written another exceptional "How to Do it and Why" hub that should gladden the hearts (and pocketbooks) of every sincere hubber.
You are very special - not just because of your hub/blog knowledge but because you are willing to share it.
Say it as it is, my friend! Well done! Shaz x
You're a good writer, starting at the beginning, filling in the gaps, and I always feel I've learned something from you.
Like you've said many times before Rebecca, it's not just "I want so I get". It's I want - I work - I receive" Lots of work to make it work, and you do such a good job of it. As always, very informative.
Wonderful hub! It's good that my theories about hubpages are confirmed. I had wondered about this for awhile. Also, do-follow links provide backlinks to the website you link to. So, if I have a link on a hub to my website, it pulls my website up in the search engines a bit for every do-follow link. :)
Unchained- you sure have great hubs. You're very diplomatic. I scare folks off.
Thanks Rebecca E. I'm back again as it (HP) didn't record that I had been here.
As we have more and more "followers" - we have more and more to follow. I try to go back to all hubs and read and view what each has to say. It isn't reciprocated and then for lack of time I have to "dance with the ones who dance with me". I will return to the non-reciprocating but usually if they don't-they don't. Thanks.
RebbecaE, thank you for helping me to understand a lot more about hub pages and hubs in general I have booked marked this page for future reference. I found your hub most interesting.
I also enjoy reading the comments of other hubbers' that your hub has inspired.
Thank you, Rebecca, for coming back and explaining.
Rebbeca E, thank you for helping me to understand a lot more about hub pages and hubs in general I have booked marked this page for future reference. I found your hub most interesting.

Great advice. Thanks!
Rebecca E., this is very helpful. Thanks for the tips.
thanks for the information, and i will start leaving more comments, and not publishing hubs quickly, but working on them a few days and then publishing them, thanks.
Good points Rebecca, especially on the importance of being interactive and linking to other hubs. Thanks for the tips.
Rebecca, my Authorscore has been bouncing though fluctuation is now never more than 2-3 points either way.
I do take every opportunity to comment as much as I possibly can given the fact HubPages is not in any way my full time gig. The ministry is. Although the ministry is not where I derive what little income I do have, it is the focal point of everything for me.
I can do so much with what little time I do have. I have 101 followers and I do everything possible. There are approximately 5-6 of those 101 that routinely show up and comment. We are expected to go out and do great things in terms of interaction, yet it goes two ways. I have neither the time nor the energy to ask each and every person via email why they don't show up anymore.
I show up on your Hubs because I learn and also wish to show support and yet I never see you on mine. I'm just following the teacher's instructions.
I have been wondering about this. So if my avatar is higher than 75 but some of my hubs are in the 60s, does that mean they are no follows or it all goes with what shows on my avatar?
Thanks again Rebecca E for sharing your knowledge. I keep going back to older hubs and find that some didn't get shared on Dig or Stumble Upon. Once I share these older hubs then the score rises and visits go up. So there are probably a number of older hubs out there that haven't been shared because they were written before the hubber even knew about sharing.
Actually this was helpful Rebecca...thanks for taking the time to do this.
Blessings to you
UlrikeGrace
My Dearest Becca...
You should be preaching instead of writing! Seriously! Somehow people do "listen" to you! Well, do not stop writing but, Keep on being the great person you are! Kindness dances in your aura 24/7.
Thank you for being here, deary!
Thumbs up! You know the bit... R.B.S
warmest regards and a cosmos full of blessings,
Al
I understood all you were writing but one thing I don't understand is that a hub which has let's say three click in one day or even eight, the other day - the arrow shows down. Then some of my hubs have 300 or 400 words and they have $$$$ or $$$$$ against it. Some have 800 or 1100 and they have $$$ and I am not being funny but they are full information and hopefully good. It buffled about it. I comment to every hub they sent me emails because i know how I feel and so I don't do it to others. I have about 40-50 a day which wants to be done. Yet, I am sorry to say, I have only about 10 or 12 always commenting. I am grateful for the comments I am getting make no mistake and I made some wonderful friends which I didn't expect and I am surprised. I hope after saying all this I am not getting shipped off to an isolated island never to be spoke to.
Another great hub Rebecca. Thanks.
Thanks yet again, Rebecca. Even though some of the 'basics' are still Greek to me, I'm learning every day-or at least trying to!

Bill-- welcome to hubpages, keep on publishing your hubs and see where it goes.
