Increasing Traffic: Commenting and Other Matters of Interest on Hubpages and Online Writing Sites
72Everyone wants something when they go online. In fact everyone wants a lot of things, in this case more comments. A lot more comments. Most want comments to know that they are getting people to read their work, and that they can increase traffic over time. Except for one thing, comments are because people have something to say. In this part of their business they feel that the comments are a bit low or non existent.
I'll be honest with you commenting on blogs or websites is one of the hardest things to get people to do-- they read and leave and maybe click on an ad, now there are a few reasons for this, but it really boils down to two things: content and traffic. It is a business and like all businesses a hub needs to be cultivated time and again this is the only way to increase traffic.
Content means there is something that a reader wants to point out, and traffic is the other factor that can make more comments or less comments. There is also the art of impressions about a hub writer.
Hubpages Commenting and Increasing traffic
So, I commented on different hubs and now should I wait?: If you have written a hub and you are new, yes you need to go out and comment more, this is a simple way for increasing traffic. You need to write a good hub. Part of what a hub needs to is look like is found by reading and commenting on other hubs.
There is an art to this commenting. Impressions you give to the hub writer are a part of the comment process. Often most people who are new simply go from hub to hub and write "great hub". Now, I have committed to commenting back on every comment people make on my hubs, even the one word ones, but often other hub writers will not do this. It is important to new hub writers to view what they write as an impression of their writing on hubpages, if they seem like they have something to say, a fellow hub writer will often go and read what this new person has written.
Now if you are established as a hub writer and have a good score and come back time and again you can of course write "look great" or "thanks for this" simply because you have established a relationship with the other hub writer. what is important is that you set a goal of reading another hub writers hub per day. I have set a goal of reading a new hub and commenting on it a day. It may seem small but really, I want to write a good comment.
Writing a good comment and taking time to read a hub is valuable. It adds a link to your profile, which in turn helps you. It is all about Impressions, for you, your hubs, your business, and your traffic.
Search Engiens and Traffic
Want to increase Traffic from Search Engines and other Online Sources?: This is important to all writers, as often they will write a hub and then wait. That is not how it works, the foundation must be laid. Everything needs help, for more than a few weeks, months is more like it. To increase traffic you will need to link, but comment on a website and leave your links as your profile and this will build traffic.
It is the impressions that others have of you and your websites that increase traffic and make a difference with the search engines. In other words people comment they are also more likely to provide you with a link to your work. If your hub looks as if it has something for them they will stay and often will comment, which is good for you. There is another part to this equation, and often many hub writers forget about this, and that other part of you the writer.
Committing to commenting on a comment is one thing, but to actually do it is another. It is not as easy to do as one might think, but it is a part of this business. People who might not comment will see you comment back on your hubs you have written. This might encourage them to write a comment knowing you will comment back, or better still go to a hub of theirs.
Granted there is a time factor to all of this, but make a commitment to answer all comments and to go to another hub writers hub and comment there is a great beginning, and you should do this. There is one thing to be said about traffic.
Search Engine and Links
Search Engines and Links: For the most part impressions are one thing, but traffic is another, to me, I believe that both need to be there to make money in any business. See links (also known as backlinks) are vital to any hub. I like to use the links with social networking sites and other sites to get my message out to others.
I would say that for each hub you need at least five or more links between you hubs and outside of hubpages to make a difference in getting more readers, which mean more traffic. Now traffic will not equeal money but it is an important aspect to money and making money online with Google AdSense.
Getting the comments from this part will mean that your hub will "look" as if people are there a lot. In fact I have to say that links are a big reason my hubs get the comments they do. it is not easy to get a comment, I would say that for every hub I write and get people to come and read often I do not get the number of comments in equal to the traffic I get. Still with links and more links the commenting has come, in time.
By adding links between your hubs there is more potential for three things: More readers, more money and of course more comments. This takes a lot of time to do, but you need to do this to encourage comments on your hubs. the newer hubs and the older hubs as well. Do not be afraid to take the time to link.
In this business... do comments help?: Yes in this business they do help a lot. It gives a good impression and a good feel to a reader when they have left a comment and you have gone and responded back on their hubs. Treat all comments as gold. They are few and far between and need a lot of attention.
By committing commenting to be a part of your business plan this will help with traffic and increasing the chances of comments and money. Of course it takes time to build a relationship with your readers but you need to do this and do this often.
I have found that once I committed to commenting back on all comments I received and then commenting on another hub writers hub, my comments have become big, I know that there will at least be a few people coming back to comment.
The biggest thing is that it took me about six months to see results and that was combining linking and commenting and a lot of keyword research to get my hubs where they are right now. In fact I am working on my older hubs to expand them and to make it easier for people to go and read them, and hopefully comment on them.
Comments and Traffic
See results without votingThe Last Word: Now some hubs simply will not get comments, it is the nature of the business we call hubpages. Some hubs will get a lot of comments, but that does not mean that they get a lot of money.
The one thing comments do for hub writers is give a sense that their work is being read by someone and that this reader has felt that the content within the hub has something for them. Do not get discouraged with hubs that have good traffic but poor comments, there are many ways to help these hubs.
To your success.

Very informative hub and still as valid as ever. Commenting boosts the writers' confidence as well as gets the one who comments some notice. This would lead to others reading your work and increase in traffic.
Thanks for sharing.
Really good Hub, Rebecca E. This is a topic that continues to keep coming up. Please take this as positive criticism, be careful with spelling typos. Otherwise this is a very useful Hub. I recently wrote my own Hub on this issue entitled "Top 10 Ways to Increase Hub Traffic." I know there are a ton of ways to do so. We can all learn from each other. If you would like to read my Hub, you can find it at:

Voted up and useful :-)
Rebecca, I am one of your regular followers, readers, commenters and somehow I think I missed this hub! So glad you shared it again.
Let me ask you, do you know how the LEVEL number for each regular commenter is determined? I did my due diligence and checked around the HubPages FAQ's and didn't see anything about it. Just curious.
Thanks a lot for this valuable info.
I get so excited when someone actually comments I nearly always write back, something, even if its just thanks for reading. I would like to get more comments, i wonder if controversial topics work. The most controversial topic I've written a hub on is "Can women speak in church - the apostale Paul and women." The hub made it to "featured" status, but i didn't get as many comments as i hoped. maybe after all, that is not so controversial a topic. My memoir hubs got more comments, interestingly.
Good hub. Thanks.
Rebecca E, your Hubs are always full of helpful tips and advice, which mean a great deal to Hubbers, especially newbies like me who are looking for ways to increase traffic and Adsense earnings. I have picked up and put into action several helpful tips while reading your Hubs. Thanks for another awesome Hub!
Very useful hub. Lots useful tips I can take to better my own. I just know I'll be reading this hub over and over till I have it drilled in my head. Thanks for the shared wisdom...
Very nice hub. Good advice. I always comment on every hub I vote on. I enjoy making comments and receiving them. God Bless You.
Firstly brilliant hub, I can't disagree with you in the slightest about the importance of commenting and using it as part of a networking/promotion plan. As such for those who are serious about trying to take advantage of the opportunities available through hubpages this should be required reading.
But at the same time, not everyone is in the same boat and hubpages is a distraction from life, a time limited hobby and as such commenting does end up a lower priority for those who can't get on here everyday or long enough to read a hub daily.
It all boils down to that old saying, you only get out what you put in and those who can be active will benefit from embracing the whole social/commenting culture of hubpages.
It's nice to have conversation inside this comment box. Nice reading your friend's comment. It's a good thing I check your hub, Ms. R. Nicely done. :D
a ha, caught you, oh wait 3 days it took me. poop
good thread by the way
working on your comments still for you
last one to comment wins

Comment Number 4, only took 17 hours for me to respond to you on mine, must read, pee.
HUB DISCRETION IS HIGHLY ADVISED:
WHAT? YOU LEAVING? Or huckin my chinick meaning it will be another 2 weeks before I return?
Oh, so confused. Should go stumble, such a fun site for me, love it the best, still can't figure out how it works yet though.
Um WTF? Do you have other hubs? I'm like so over this one, respectfully. I'll have to check one day.
Oh think I'm procrastinating again, but gotta love stalking you, it gives me a reason: in your hood at your crib
I can't help but have a really creepy feeling you are already responding to my Responded comment to win round two, have knot in my stomach, and a piece in the back of my pants, Okay must run but (yes, more.)
have your Gangsta slash Rapper slash PIMP slash Dealer slash Ho for you in the Hood, I got your back but on those streets you are
RESPECTA
(kinda combo of Responding and Rebecca, while demanding respect, and the boys will back it off, so now you own this hood
R, thanks, leaving that comment got me started back on responding, OMG some are 8 weeks old, [drops head in shame] and still I am here again OMG!
Do they have a responders accolade? I'll pee if they do
And, um, you really could use some comments on this hub, hence why I am leaving so many
Wonder what the maximum space is for the comment capsule, I maxed at 500 last year, but relache i think or darkside were in the thousands or I believed lairs, dang, gullible
Well on a OCD day I would be happy to find out this capacity for you, but I'm like busy responding to 8 week comments OK?
Check this duet out, just put it in pulling trigger hub, unbelievable
Rhianna and Eminemem, who knew, Can't stop watching it

Oh ya, bye
I am truly afraid to hit post comment only to find out you have already responded to this. If this shall be true, I'll pee.
OMG I cannot believe you responded before I finished typing
I think I just peed my pants
Your hilarious and awesome
bless you for saying thank you too!
Honestly, your a gem, given the content of this hub had someone left that message, they deserved to die by lethal deletion, your too kind girl, I'll be back by next year or when I am done responding my comments, whichever comes first
so sorry I wasn't quicker xo
I was just kidding, LMAO
Ok so i do believe there are no coincidences (besides sublingupon one another now and then), So in 14 months here I have religiously and gratefully commented back, similar to you, unless of course your already responding to the comment above this one while I write it, then I am screwed. What was I talking about? Oh ya, me :) In some cases my comment section was far more interesting and fun than the hub, I thought. Other times they formed their own little forum.
I was reading your hub and really trying to think how i I get to a point where it is important to me that I do not to the hub but for me, more to the hubber.
However, to your point, in order for me to want a Hubber to know I am a real follower, they need to grab me with content, no doubt.
Rebecca, it's funny, two hubs, if i am entertained or emotionally moved and enjoy the style of the writer, maybe not the commercial aspect, I am sold by Hub 2!
Here I clearly will not be returning. Ya, right! I am embarrassed how long it has taken me to get here. Well I'm here now, of course with ADD, constantly loosing train of thought.
I began talking about comments and in those/these 14 months, bla bla already said............... however I have not approved or responded to a comment in about a month spread over 7 hubs, there's so many. I feel like you know what! And think it has bothered day rolling into day i froze at some point. This may sound ridiculous to some. Now I don't check back at my responses and if only one should check back then i want them to know it did matter, and does make a
they were there.
btw how much do you charge per hour?
Point; commenting back is thoughtful, as much as commenting is. OK refocus, so here I go got the nerve to face my comments and shake hands with each one at a time, and I am here WTF?
Weird I say and feels like it was just the medicine I needed, and I say thanks tons.
kimberly (and prey)
nice hub.
i will use this. ok am following you
Great hub Rebecca, very informative =)
Thanks for the great information. I will follow your advice.
nice article
Thanks Rebecca, I am a new on Hubpages and trying to figure it out. Your advice were really great and I will read more from you. I like what you said about commenting and the importance of commenting back. I also took the advice to read at least one new hub per day.
Thanks again!
Thanks Rebecca! When I receive my first comment, I was so glad because it proved that people have been reading my hubs. However, i have not yet realized how important and gold it is. Thanks again!
I do believe that commenting is a way to have bondings among all of us as hubbers. This is the way to show we spend our precious time for one another. Another Good Hub from Rebecca E.
1442 followers - is that a fair size army or a small country???
Thanks for the useful info - nice and simplified. I've been looking for a Traffic Hub to link to. This is perfect. Best Wishes.
I am so glad you wrote a hub on this subject. It does take time to read your fellow hubbers work, but it is worth it and that's why we're all here.
With the change in the rating and sharing option, more readers have gotten lazy. I've seen hub/poem labelled as funny that were not (one was about incest . . this is funny?).
I feel the comments inspire me to continue my writing. Thank you for this hub it was much needed. Bookmarked, rated and shared.

rajan-- yes it is partly to do with that but also it does help your articles long-term as long as you continue to write and comment a bit on other hubs.
