I Can't Believe It! I Gave Up and Now! Ten Reasons You Need to Stay to Make Money
71Give Up on What? You Business? Making More Money Online?
I can hear it now, I give up! hubpages is...(insert whatever) and I didn't make money. I'm so mad. I'll close my account. (and on and on and on)
Wait, hold on one minute. If you've given up you can still come back, you won't make the money you lost but there is a way to repair some damage. So sit down for a minute take a deep breath, don't touch the delete account button, and listen to some ways to understand money, traffic, hubs and fans. So read, relax comment, do some things...
There are in fact a few things you can do right now to help yourself, and to help others and you can do them all in one day, and potentially make money and start a business and love what you do on hubpages... so relax and think of a few more things you can do...
Other than not closing your account!
So you didn't make money in five days, but can you figure out why?:Simple you need a following and you need followers who will read your hubs. More importantly you need amazon, and eBay and google, and everything else to work in your favor and that certainly doesn't take just five days. It might but chances are high that it won't. Google AdSense also takes time to "get the ball rolling" so that requires some time, and a bit of business sense.
For some this is reason enough to close any account, but wait the fact remains that you don't have the big thing called a fan base! Do you think that I got as many fans as I have by not writing hubs? these people are the lifeblood of my hubs. try to figure out how your traffic works some day are slower than others and some days are insane, that is the nature of this business. That is also the nature of making money.
If you Don't Have a big Fan Base and You Have a Hundred Hubs.... This is NOT Good: With this you want two things, a good hub score and a good number of fans. (now called followers) I know it's hard to thank all of them in a hub, but drbj is one that I need to mention right away. thanks.
Still, you need a fan base for your hubs, and that takes time. You need to be aware of how much a hub score can be affected by writing say 5 hubs in one day. Besides who has time to read 5 hubs by one person in one day?
Growing a fan base is a gradual thing, and you need to write your best. This also takes time, be aware that there are thousands of people on hubpages, and we write to different audiences. People will also look at your other hubs, so fix them up and edit them from time to time.
Did you Put your Hubs As A Link Somewhere Else?:Yes I know it's so easy to have people link to your hubs, but really, that's your job, to begin with at least, I put my hubs on digg and Stumble Upon, but that takes time, I also do this for others, but their hubs need to be really good.
The more links a hub has the better it ranks on google, but that takes time. And help from other hubbers. So, remember this. Links are a vote which lets google know the page is liked by others the more votes the more likely to get traffic the more likely you'll make money.
Do You Use Social Networking Sites?:Stumble Upon, FaceBook, Digg, Blogs, Websites, All of these sites, will allow you to post your hubs up as a link (found under Share it) There you can share your hubs with friends and the world. I can say right now, I've found a lot of hubbers use Stumble Upon, and yes you can find out who "stumbled" or "dug" your hubs, just click on the links.
Yes, you can find me on Stumble Upon, and look up your hubs on my favorites... guess what you might find a few of your own. That's the beauty of social networking sites. It gets a different sort of traffic and it can also make you money. If you aren't on any of these get on them and fast.
Yes, you can find many others from hubpages on there as well.
Google and AdSense and All that Good Stuff: If you have hubs, most likely you'll want to learn about Google and AdSense. Most everyone does, and they have visions of what they will get from google Adsense-- in terms of making money at least. Based on what I've read there is a break down in terms of monthly income:
All of all the publishers who have Google AdSense: 25% make $100 per month. (now results vary on these number following) Of these 25% 10-15% make more than $500 per month and of these about 5% make more than $10,000 per month. What that means in plain English is if you make less than the monthly payout, welcome to the club. Also remember that until you get $100 there is no payout so it might take a while.
Again google works as a business and to make money, and so should you.
Content and Following are vital, but then...: So is a return readership, and good quality links to other hubs and sites. So say that having a large following will make money, but really you need to establish one big thing: Trust. See if you come and follow everyone, it still won't help you, you don't have the trust. If you comment on everything but it's more like "i Love this" it might end up getting marked as spam. So be wise. Comment on hubs, but make your point good enough that the hubber needs to comment back. This not only adds to a hub but adds to interest in you. Which in turn might drive traffic to your hubs.
Don't Write Only to Make Money: This may seem counter to what I've been saying, but really this is important. If I go to a hub that tells me 101 ways to make money, but really upon reading it is only to draw more money to them, (and we all know the kind!) well money certainly won't come via me!
If that same writer worked it into something like 101 ways to make money, then added examples that I could follow and use to help me, that is something I'd want to read again and again, I might even link to it. See the difference? They helped me and I will help them, by mentioning their hubs, leaving a comment, becoming a follower, adding it to Stumble Upon. So why the difference?
The first seems less helpful, more like spam, the second might get return people since you want to learn from it. That is why a how to hub works well.
Think you Understood Google? Well, not really: I read a lot of hubs that talk about keywords and google and now much money you can make in the business. They talk about how much money you can potentially make per keyword. I don't think that they understand Google at all. A good hub needs traffic, not just a little traffic, steady traffic from different sources google likes this. (for now at least, google has been known to change the rules.) Different sources allows you to get a different audience and potentially more money, or more traffic.
I thought about giving up....
See results without votingDid You try Fixing your Hubs to Get a better Score?:This goes for hubs and blogs. Since the focus is on hubs, if you have a hub you'd like to get traffic to you need a pretty good score or many comments or a lot of traffic or all three. best if it is all three, What that means is you need to promote yourself so to speak. make valuable comments, yes people do read comments, and respond to the ones on your hubs.
Reply even to thank them for coming, but reply. Also, give a hub a chance and do some linking and social networking. this is a business and promote where you can. This is one way that you can help yourself get traffic and make money.
This will help but it's really only one part of it. Take time to go back to your oldest hubs and expand them and add some links. this will help there as well. Of course don't be afraid to delete if needed. Use it as a last resort, but use it, if needed.
Were you realistic in Your Plan to Make Money?: I know this sounds crazy but a lot of people don't give a thought to how they might go about making money. Some have and they give a lot of advice and some haven't. The ones who have a plan seem to have a drive. the ones who have a goal or and idea they need to share are willing to keep going. I've made a plan and now it's starting to come together.
I am hoping that by now those who have read many f my hubs know what that goal is: to help other hubbers in their success. we all try very hard, and it is something we need to work at. Publishing hubs takes time, and so does making money, but if your overall plan is something of value, then the rest will fall into place.
Don't give up, Having success takes time, so don't give up. If you did leave, come back you might not have what you once did, but you will find success. Hubpages is a ever changing group, but come and publish a few hubs, and see what you can do. Something good will always come your way.

I see on this HUB that you have four Amazon books a third of the way down and four more 2/3s of the way down within your text. I would love to put a book for sale where I talk about it in a HUB. How do you do that? And I have only been able to include three books, or maybe four maximum at the end only. Am I doing something wrong?
very nicely written. :)
This is very enlightening, I remember myself getting discouraged with Blogger because I don't know how to promote it. Well, patience is really important in doing this stuff. You have to learn tons of things and write with quality.
People get discouraged by what you said as well as writer's block and disinformation.
Taking a break for clarity is a good practice.
This hub obviously took a lot of work and dedication. I had never heard of Stumble Upon and some of the other social networks you mentioned! This is all new to me and I need the money hubpages could potentially provide. All I know is I love writing! You have encouraged me that I can make money doing something I love! Thank you
As usual all of your hubs are great. Frequently you refer to fixing your older hubs what is an older hub (how old would an older hub be) And what do you mean by fix them I have a few ideas but what exactly are you talking about. Thank you in advance.
Thank you for your advice and inspiration, Rebecca. I am just getting started, long term plan for cutting work hours and more time writing/blogging/hubbing. You write sense and clear speak. I like it!
Will keep checking this
More great advice and encouragement! I love HP, love the opportunity it gives me to write, love interacting on the forums. However, there are times when I wonder whether I will ever succeed in creating the passive income that would let me cut down at least a little on the massive number of hours I spend working. That's when I start to feel discouraged, and that's when I read your hubs to get me going again.
Reading all these comments is the most work i have done in awhile! I'm not an online marketer i just enjoy writing a few hubs and reading others. I make my income from offline marketing.
Great hub to keep those working hubs for income to keep at it. Wish you all the best! Keep up the good work.
I enjoyed reading this. It made me think back to when I first joined Hubpages. After a good couple of weeks or so I ended up abandoning the site and only came back to it after a friend of mine said she was earning three figures from Adsense every month. Now I am aiming to do the same! It's good to be back :)
Nice hub thanks.
AMEN!!! You can't just write to make money. With enough hubs, you've written words that could fill a book. And if you write the book just to make money, publishers will be able to tell in a heartbeat that you didn't care about what you were writing. I'm sensing it's the same things with hubs: you need to be passionate (or at least semi-interested) in what you're writing about, or the money you so desperately want won't come anyways. Traffic is the internet's equivalent to print editors.
Thanks for the advice!
I wasn´t thinking of giving up but thanks anyway because I found your hub encouraging and useful for my future work.
You are the born natural coach, you heal and give hope to hubbers which are trying there best.
Quitting is the last thing i'll do coz hubpages is not my primary income anyway.nice hub
Thanks for this Hub. I have just gotten started on Hubpages and I'm trying to keep my expectations realistic. This really puts things in perspective for me.
As with any content creation on the internet, earnings are slow to grow at first but as you continue to add new content you will expand your earning potential. One thing that helped me was to start linking related hubs together so my hubs could share traffic.
I don't like websites where you got to be active in the community just to stay dofollow. I'll have to neglectful to my blogs and be posting comments here all the time just to stay dofollow.
I'm focusing on my blogs and websites. I'm thru with hubpages.
Rebecca, out of all the HubPages "advice" out there, you are one of about four or five people I really pay attention to. I haven't made it do a lot for me yet, but it is slowly inching in the right direction--what more can I ask?
Thanks for this, it is very insightful.
Mike
Rebecca, you continue to amaze! Your energy and enthusiasm just never seems to wane. And the most amazing thing is that you manage to encourage the newbies, seek them out and give them loads of advise, all while maintaining several blogs, and taking those hubs you like and "sharing the love".
This is another example of your positive and helpful spirit.
Hi Rebecca,
I enjoyed reading this Hub. When someone like yourself with some real and valuable information regarding HubPages talks I make sure and listen. ;)
Nice info .....I have only been active on hubpages for around 3-4 days but after playing a little with my hubs and seen some good results (300 views a day) im actually thinking of outsourcing some work and making it a full time business. There is alot of potential here getting easily indexed and the authority hubpages carries .Im pretty good at seo and keyword research(one of the factors most hubsters never make a dime)but having your own site is very difficult to maintain in the serps and needs alot of patience.Ive actually found a way that i think is a gold mine just by trial and error so nothing is impossible.
Hey Rebecca E.,
My favorite part of this whole Hub is the paragraph that states:
All of all the publishers who have Google AdSense: 25% make $100 per month. (now results vary on these number following) Of these 25% 10-15% make more than $500 per month and of these about 5% make more than $10,000 per month. What that means in plain English is if you make less than the monthly payout, welcome to the club. Also remember that until you get $100 there is no payout so it might take a while.
This paragraph gives me hope. If someone else has built the bridge to success, then all I have to do is follow in their footsteps. The info in your Hub is part of that bridge. Great Hub!
Some people think that writing a Hub is like winning the lottery, buy a ticket for a dollar and you'll be an instant millionaire. i.e. write one Hub and millions of people will flock to it and you'll make millions of dollars...not! Many of them come and go like the wind. Unfortunately without consistent and persistent effort they will often fall short of their goals.
Thank you for a very interesting hub again, reading your hubs gives me hope .
Is the picture of the jar of coins, your big take on hub money?
This is some great advice, but, I have a stumbleupon account and don't know anyoone there so it does nothing. I signed up at Reddit and got resounding results in the first day, only to drop to nothing there after. Am I not using these sights properly?
Okay, you talked me into staying. You've convinced me to keep writing my hubs and give it time and learn all I can. I consider you one of my best sources on the subject. If nothing else you give me a positive view.
I'm a hub newbie. An infant. I've been at the keyboard for so many hours today, my back is welded (painfully) in place. Yet, here I still sit, having published 9 or 10 hubs, and now searching for answers ...
So, you say that it's good to ad links to our hubs, right? I need this spelled out for me, please. Links TO what? I've put a link in most of my hubs to my personal website, and one or two relevant topic links (ie, aaa.com or something like that). Is that what you mean? I posted most of my hubs on my FB page, but stopped short of posting them all in one sitting so as not to freak out my "friends."
Thanks for being so generous with your help!
Lynda Gary
Like TattoGuy, I left then came back with a different name. Before I wasn't serious about making money. I didn't know the first thing about all this tech stuff. But now I'm becoming educated and it's actually pretty easy and very fun!
Good tip. I will directly go and digg out my oldest hubs and squidoo lenses. Must be interesting to refurbish them in modern marketing style. Thank you, Rebecca.
Thank you, It's interesting.
i thought i gave until i found out some new stuff in writing hubs, and so i am working on about 5 hubs right now. i plan to publish them in about a week or 2 depending how much more time i have.
I don't want to be accused of hyperbole, Rebecca, but finding you on Hubpages was one of the best moves I've made in some time.
Not only are you a superb writer, not only are you willing to share your expertise with other hubbers, but you also seem to have a charming personality and best of all, you became my fan and even mentioned me on your hub.
Go get 'em, tiger.
Well as you know I was on here as BadCo, deleted and rejoined and took the trouble to learn seo, tis deff now paying off, great hub as always.
great hub! I need to spend more time improving my own hubs. I love to write but would like to make a little money in the process if possible. thanks for the advice!
Hi Rebecca
Once again thank you for writing an inspiring hub. I started writing on hub pages roughly 6 months ago waited a while (week or two) and saw nothing on my Adsense (sad face) I left hub pages for 6 months and about two weeks ago logged on my Adsense and saw that I actually made something from one of my hubs, and when I say something i mean .. errr.. about $0.42 .. this was all that was needed to acctualy confirm that if I put in some more effort that I could make something. In the last two weeks I cleaned up all the crappy hubs I had and wrote another 4 hubs and since then made roughly $1.57. Yes I know this sounds little but I;m South African & this gets coverted rought to Rand which is times 8 & we only get paid out at R1000. What I am trying to say is that ever since i put some extra effort in that i realized that it is possible.
One question though... Regarding Amazon, they are very concerned about you having your own website with already high traffic, or is there an alternative way without having your own website?
Kind Regards
FridgeWheeL
Thanks for another great hub Rebecca E, all your hubs appera to be great winners. Thank you for sharing. Godspeed. creativeone59
My dearest Becca...
You did it again, huh? That is good. Helping other hubbers, bloggers, people in general is magical. It gives one a sense of belonging. The one who doesn`t understand that Patience is a virtue can hardly cultivate it. People take patience for granted. AS I have always said: Attitude is everything and Gratitude is the shine within it...
Great hub!
Two thumbs up!
Rated, bookmarked and about to be stumbled...
warm regards and blessings, my dear
Al
Bravo! Yep it takes a lot work and dedication and it all depends do you want to make money or not if so you gotta work at it. Sadly there not instant way to make money. I think its just like any job. Want the money you gotta work to get it. Even if its just a little job on the side its still a "job" and you gotta work at it. A little stubborness works well too. Lol
One of the things I try to tell others who come to HubPages is to not get discouraged. All successes take time. Many just lack the patience and the discipline to stick with it. I hope that people will take notice of this hub and learn from it. Another helpful hub, Rebecca! Wonderful work as usual.
Yes, you're one hub away from the century mark! I wonder what it'll be?
99 hubs hey, 1 more, This one was much needed for me thanks!
Great information here. I will have to try Stumble Upon and Digg. Thanks!
I find it hard to delete anything. I've got web pages that have been around since the stone age. I just can't see doing all the hard work of making a hub then giving up on it. Sometimes that top ten on Google can take 6 months, a year or longer. Give up and you won't never find out what could have been.
Very good message.
Rebecca, I think I am going to refer to you as the HP cheerleader. This one is especially encouraging.
"Shake it to the left. Shake it to the right. Come on HP fans let's FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!" :)
You are so right. You have to stay the course and work work work...but above all enjoy yourself along the way. Thanks Rebecca.
It's become a 'Whatever happened to...?' I've been around 1 1/2 years - and so many people have just stopped writing. Well, I know life gets really busy - but sure don't close your account so you can come back.
And followers are one of the great parts of hub pages - the comments are often worth a whole other hub!
Thanks for this hub! It's a great pep talk for those that want to leave and a reminder of all the possible benefits.
Rebecca, you always have such good advice and your hubs seem to know what question we all may have. Good job and thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Hey you read my mind.......I was on the point of giving up when I read your last hub. Now I'm SEOing my hub titles and getting more readers. Amazing. Thanks for this hub.
another great hub, real good advice rebecca!
Great information. Thanks!
Rebecca, A lot of good tips as always. Google adsense has been very slow for me but finally improving. I am still learning so I have decided to just keep building on the my work and continue to improve (at least I think I am improving). Thanks for this hub.
This hub is full of great advices, I hope it will be read a lot. Well done Rebecca. I think many hubbers, me first, must say thanks to you for all the errors you prevent us from doing. Can I stumble this? :)
As always a great hub with lots of good tips. I have learned some more from this hub. Thank you for your help.
I was thinking about quiting, but after reading your hub I've decided to put more effort into it. Thank you for this wonderful hub.
I tried many ways to get money on line however I didn't know what i was doing I canceled it all it takes a lot of time but If I had your Hub on hand I would of been more directed towards it I may start back up Thanks great hub
that is a def. thumbs up.I thought it is well put.Making money with google adsense is time consuming.social networking can be fun and a great benefit to the business. All the things said in this hub is what makes hubpages hubpages
