I am Confused: What? I Thought This Would Make Money Online-- or At Least Be The Best Way

Money: A Confusing Thing

Welcome to confusion central. Many people think that publishing one article online something will instantly bring them money. They will write on websites that they think will make money and then they will wait, three days or four before they go and complain on all the forums that they are having trouble earning online.

They have websites, and they have the blogs, and they do think that what they write is the best thing since the online world began. The problem is that no one likes to be told that the writing or the "keyword filled problem," They also don't like the Google AdSense money-- that they make (the small pennies to be exact).

They want traffic and, most of all they want to have traffic from places which are going make them a lot of money. They really want to get that money, and then cry on various forums to that they have not found the next big thing. The fact is that if you write quality at some point something will stick. But there is more to that... which is why...

They are confused. They are really confused.

Making Money Should BE Easy

The first problem that most people face is that concept that they hear that most people make a lot of money. It seems the greatest challenge to them is that they have all wanted to make money but do not hear the details.

When I tell people that I get payments from many of my writing work each month, people tend to gloss over what I actually do to make that sort of money. For example, let me go into a few details about how I make money with my writing.

1) I do not write only on one or two websites, for the most part, I have about 6 or 7 different sites I write on, and which make me money. These include: Squidoo, Hubpages, My Website and Blogs (there are four of them), Wikinut, Bukisa, and Excerptz. I do other things such as ghostwriting which makes me money online. The key is to read this again: I write on more than one site.

2) I link: Frankly I link. It is not fun, it often does not get any immediate results, but in the long term it kept my traffic going. I am not into the concept of a billion links to my hubs, but rather I do believe in the concept of getting that traffic there is some way, and somehow. The point is that the more traffic, the more likely they will add a link to your work as well.

More Money Points

3) I do not duplicate content: I am quite clear on this. I do not duplicate content, there are many reasons for this, but the idea behind it is this: If my content is stolen, I can file a DMCA complaint, also because I write on a lot of writing sites, I can expand on different branches of information that I am interested in. Some is about writing, some on publishing, some on history, but they are on different websites. All of it is original content. Now that hubpages does not allow for duplicate content, I am an even bigger believer of that.

4) I look at keywords, and I decide (as in I think) about what will help me get traffic, but not only that but will make people do something, take a poll click on a link or even click an ad. What I am most concerned about is what people need, and not what might make me the biggest clicks. ( For example the term money will not make what you think it might make you!)

5) I also do not publish right away. I am big on this. Mostly because when I publish in a hurry I make mistakes, and these mistakes are a bad thing. I know when I do look over my work, there are still mistakes, but spelling mistakes, short hubs (of 500 words or less) do not need to be published-- as in the ones which can be seen by a spellchecker. They won't make moneylong term, if at all.

So.. My Earnings are Bad... I do this, I do what you Do!

I suspect that at this point you've looked at these five basic points, done a bit of mental math and went, but I do all of these things, and my earnings are still poor in fact, I can guess you are not doing all of them all of the time. These are detail things, they make you money but you have to do them all the time, every day.

Adding links is boring, and keyword research, working with whatever keyword tool you use, is boring. I can guess you do a little bit of linking, and that you read a lot of hubs on how to make money online, and how to increase your earnings, but the fact is you take one look at most keyword research tools (Google AdWords Keyword Tool or SpyFu), and you look for numbers which you think make sense (or will be big earners)--- but with a bit of looking you find that it is not such a great idea.

Then you publish a hub, and you get a few comments, and you begin to count your pennies which you make that day, and you wonder what is going on... you begin to get confused, you heard somewhere that you need to do something else. You know you need to increase traffic but how can you do that?

Revenue Potential Is Just That

Revenue Potential. Simple enough?

The thing I think that gets to most people is after the keyword research they have done, they look at the revenue potential and find that what they think they can make with a term is not getting a return on investment that they thought. Money from Google AdSense and other affiliate programs are important.

Let us test a theory, a lot of people have made mention of it, but I want to go into it as it pertains to a "make money" hub, now I want to use it as my main keyword, in my web page so I go to say a keyword tool, and look it up, and the potential is $2.45.

If you are new to using a keyword tool, don't go jumping around to add these keywords just yet, you will need three other things to make a good choice if this is a good keyword for you: Competition, (as in how many websites are out there competing for that term, and what type of websites they are) How much people are in fact willing to spend to get a ad up, and the competition for that particular ad.

So, you might not get $2.45 per click, you could make pennies, you have to rely on your content and your linking. The reason is that the better the choice of keywords, and the longer your work is up the more likely you will "make money." This is why most make money online website do not make money online. (At least with Google AdSense.)

Making Money Is A Thinking Game

Okay before you go and say that no one make money with Google AdSense or any other affiliate program, understand that you need to spend some time thinking about what you are writing about.

You have build a website, and you have to get hosting for it, and then you have make it so that people will read, it which means building links, and do some keyword research, and then you will work with the affiliate programs you choose to have on your website.

Yes, this about making money online, but it is also about giving your readers information that they can use to build on their earnings. Again, you need to think and you need to understand what your goals are, but if you do not do the small things, you will be confused, and still wondering why you are earning what you are earning.

napetv-- in fact i have published a book, so I am pretty content with the fact that you can make money in many ways-- however, even editing can be tedious. Most people-- should they need money, and many do, will work themselves up over pennies. I don't know if they "cry" but they certainly seem to get mad over a published hub-- especially when they don't tweek anything.

You could have written several decent novels by now with all the hours invested in linking, networking, keyword research, etc (none of the aforementioned falls into the realm of creating-or writing. Tedious Skulduggery is a good term)

Do people really "cry?" If so, that is a sad commentary. People working themselves up over something as inane as "Hub Earnings." If I had 10 hours a day, I would devote them to all that tweeking(no offense) I would write some songs, or get serious about a screenplay. The other can have the 200 .20 cent Hubs. Hey, pennies make dollars...In time.

Your points are all good, but the one that I feel is the most important is the emphasis on writing for more than site. It is always a good idea to diversify and not have all your earnings tied to one site. Voted up.

Excellent advice. I also have found that writing and immediately publishing is a mistake. Making money writing isn't as easy as so many people think. It is had, disiplined work.

TheK1ingway-- no that would be wrong, what you can do is write on the same topic that you are writing about here. Never copy and paster-- this can get you into alot of trouble here and elsewhere. Most website now don't allow you to do this.

I joined Hubpages with the intention to make money. But now, I have started to enjoy hubbing. Money has become secondary. It gives a lot of satisfaction when you know that somebody has read your hub and got something out of it. A real feel good experience. A very nice hub!

Good tips. I think a lot of people to expect to make money easily because it's "online," but little do they know that making money online takes just as much patience, drive, commitment and hard work as an offline business. And that's really what it comes down to, is building up a business around you so that you can make money.

I agree with you on the money issue. I wish to add that making money should not be the primary focus of any hubber. What about the joy of writing? The satisfaction derived from being a member of the hubbers community and of being able to exchange ideas with others? For me the money is secondary.

Very well written and informative. Hope people take it seriously how difficult it can be to make money online. It is a job and you must make sure you keep a varied group of sites. Almost like investing, can't have all your eggs in one place.

You've told it like it is. Writing on line is not a get rich quick method. I'm in my second year and it's only after I had over 100 Squido lenses that I have started to get monthly payouts on SQuidoo. Only have one-fourth that many Hubs, and I haven't had an Adsense payout yet -- even combined with a blog, Qondio, Tagfoot, and She Told Me. Of course, I haven't none nearly as much on those sites as I have on HubPages.
