Make Money: Hubpages and Day Jobs
84Make Money.. and Quit your Day Job?
How many of you want to quit your day job and write full time with all the money you make being from your writing? Hands Up... okay now how many of your want to make money and be your own boss? Sounds like fun right? Are you ready for this business of quiting a steady pay cheque and writing and make money for a living?
This is a business so I'll tell it like it is, from my own experiences of the past two years, or best put my adventures in the online world. Believe me, making money is a great, but it also needs to pay the bills. Your online writing needs to do this. As I've said this is a business so get ready to do something most people don't like.
Learning about SEO (search engine optimization), about linking, about community, about writing, about Google and other search engines, about making money online. About Google AdSense and how it makes you money. About you as a person.
Get ready to work more than you ever have in your life.
online business and making money online fast
The Online Business of Making Money: It has been my experience that there is such a thing as a tipping point, where you can safely say that your hubs and websites and other links are beginning to create the things you want, that is make you money. Yes, and Google AdSense is a part of making money online, but just a part.
Still I'll focus on hubpages. I would say that the tipping point for most hub writers to begin to make money is having about 30 interlinked and well linked hubs. By this, I am referring to have incoming links from as many social networking sites as possible and from as many of your blogs and other websites as you are able.
Next you will need to begin the process of learning which traffic will help you make money. Social Networking Sites will for the most part get you traffic, but will not make you money. You will need to focus on the big three: Google, Yahoo, and MSN. These are the search engines of choice for millions of not a couple of billion web surfers.
The key to making money is to have enough online presence that people will come to see you as an expert and will help you by adding links to your sites, but you also need to do work on that front, you need to do the work as well of adding links and commenting.
So how long does this take? I mean, I want something that will make me money so I can quit my day job: Keep your day job until you actually begin to make steady money. If you do insist on quitting, I can tell you how long I actually work on my hubs and my blogs and other websites.
In a week, when I am not working on my writing for my book, I can easily spend about 50 hours of my hubs, and my blogs and other online articles. I also do this 7 days a week, and I have kids. So there you go.
The things I do during the week: fixing up older hubs and adding links to them based on how the "link level" on a hub metric is showing. Expanding them and adding interlinks between them. Writing and publishing a new hub. Commenting on my hubs, and trying to return comments to other hub writers on their hubs. Adding my hubs to various sites for linking purposes. Writing an e-zine article based upon my hub, with the link added to a hub which I have based the article on. Writing at least 3 blog posts in a day and adding them to some of the links.
All this while being a single mom and still working a freelance writing business... want my job?
See, it takes a long time, and a lot of energy and effort to make money, at least at the beginning, i know a lot of hub writers who will write a hub and promote it for say two or three weeks, but it doesn't work that way, you need to keep at it or what you are doing will not succeed.

Making Money... Tell Me How
Great... but tell me how to make money: Well, i have told you, but you did not like the answer. It takes time and effort, and writing eight hours a day on a hub but then doing nothing more will not cut it. There is the fine art of promotion and increasing traffic to your hubs. 1,000 visitors a month will not cut it, in fact it is best to get 1,000 visitors a day to make money. So what else is needed to get these people to your work?
SEO, and social networking sites and traffic and links are the key, but these all take time to learn. If you really want to know a lot about SEO, the key to SEO is learning about your choices of keywords and how it can, or not, affect your search engine rankings. For example, not making money will not get you hits, nor will it make you money.
At the same time the keywords which are general, and anyone can find, or look up, such as religion, money, writing, or so general that if people do type it in, your website or blogs will not be found without a lot of effort on your part. A longer keyword (two or three words) is always preferred. Again do not get to specific.
Still you need to learn about it, and that takes the most time and energy, once that happens you will see a bit of money coming in. Not as much as you might want abut a bit. Again, you will need to look at the "big" hub writers, and see what they do in their lens and why they are so "great."
So are you ready to spend time learning as much as you can about how to get traffic and most importantly search engine traffic?
Are you willing to pay the price to make the money to quit your job?
Search engine traffic is one thing that will help you make money, but you do need to think about, but also the smaller social networking sites, which do not get you money directly will indirectly give you the links you need to make the money you want.
Making Money and Working Hard At Online Writing Sites
So, How much time will it take to do all of these things you suggest, I've publihsed a lot of hubs and now I should be making money?:
I am still a work in progress when it comes to doing all these things, I have heard that it takes about 10,000 hours before you can say you have mastered a subject... I believe in some areas I am about one tenth of the way there and in others about a fifth of the way there.
By this I mean I have done the reading, and bought the books and have read them a few times and started to do as the books suggested. Sometimes it is simply doing it over and over again and sometimes I have to go back and do it all over again.
But after nearly a year, yes I have made money. It is pretty steady in coming every day. Still, it took time to get there, and often I wonder if it is a matter of luck combined with hard work... so in other words I think I created my luck.
That being said, luck isn't real-- it's the hard work and mastetry of a subject that creates your pot of gold. As long as you publish some fine hubs, you will be okay.
If I Worked at least 8 hours a day I would....
See results without votingThe last word: I would not suggest quitting your day job and trying this until you have a bit of saving behind you for a few months. I have read a lot of people's writings about this business and for the most part it is like any other business.
They didn't really begin to make money until year 2 and they did not make a lot of money until about 5 years in. So it takes time and a lot of late nights and dedication to the craft. There is an art to this business, and part of it is knowing when you want to go from having a bit of extra income to making rent from Google. Each takes a certain bit of energy to do.
If you are serious in making money online and quiting your day job, be prepared to work longer and harder and for more hours than you did at work, because this is a online job, and money will come but it take a lot of time and energy.
To your success.

Your approach is much more realistic and therefore useful to me than some others I have read. Thank you for the interesting hub.
thank you for the reality check I am a stay at home/work at home mom, I sell on eBay and doing really well. I write part time and enjoy both hubpages and squidoo lenses. But you are right this is a process and part time it will take a year or two before I see anything significant as far as money with my writing... so off to sell on eBay and keep it flowing. Thanks again
Dear Rebecca - my implication on the comment that even though the economic climate will be the same, the competition for excellent SEO will increase as more people write blogs and vie for the same topic areas. This makes it harder to pass the robots on Hubpages that require ORIGINAL work. Blessings, Debby
Excellent Hub, lots of great information that I will use for sure! I've only been "hubbing" for 2 months and although I'm still only making cents as far as money goes it still makes me smile. I'm a stay at home mom so I have the time (when I'm not teaching with my youngest child) and maybe one day it will make me enough money to pay our mortgage and car payment. Maybe....Thanks again for the info!
Excellent advice! I began writing for HubPages 5 weeks ago and my focus this week has been to increase traffic. I know it will take time to generate the revenue I'm looking for. I'm happy that I've at least started. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge.
Dear Rebecca ~ 18 months since your wrote this advice column and it has become even more competitive in the on-line writing field since the Panda fiasco, thousands if not millions more people trying their hands at writing, and the need to write unique work. Blessings to you, Debby
You are right about it takes time, I have been writing for hubpages for 19 months and have yet to receive a payment. Where can I go to learn about adsense. Very informative article, thanks for sharing the truth
Great hub. Here is my thoughts:
After months of participating in writing contests and graphic design projects, after months of writing many articles and passing my exams, I have the strong conviction that one thing will remain to stay, that is, luck. It is luck that makes up the integral but small percentage of success. I think I am jinxed or simply ''not up to par'', and as such, I lost copious amounts of effort and time into doing something which is my passion but not my source of income. The best way to earn a living is to, conventionally, get a reputable qualification and work practically.
Rebecca
The last paragraph in this hub is a realistic eye opener for everyone who thinks that making money online by writing and other avenues is easy. Ghost writing gives writers instant money but then that's not being self employed, is it. This down to earth hub is a must read for all aspiring writers/publishers looking to take a plunge into the world and concept of making money online.

excellent hub. It would be helpful to new hubbers like me :) voted up.
Nice Hub! Thanks for sharing
Thank you Rebecca, I have been researching SEO today, there is a lot of info.
About 3 weeks ago I was searching via Google work at home jobs. Hubpages came up. This hub and the one about Adsense has a lot of great information. I am a bit confused on SEO and will look into that. Thank you!
Good info for us newbies. Thanks!
Informative hub. I love that you tell it the way it is. Being realistic is a big part of eventual success. Thanks for the well written hub. Rated up and amazing.
Hey Rebecca E,
Great realistic advice earning money on Hubpages!
To Your Success,
Jim
Another great hub!
Hi Rebecca!
Your comments are very honest ... really came from someone who have tried doing it! I enjoyed reading your hub, and nice advice on quitting your day job!
It wasn't easy to write hub pages in full time for me. Perhaps I should have to learn more SEO tips and link building to be successful in writing. Thanks for sharing
Great Hub this internet marketing is really a hit these days! Thanks for sharing the information mate!
I always think that SEO is not a useful thing but I've changed my mindset towards it nowadays. It has given me some changes to how I look at writing online. Great hub, hub up once more, Rebecca.
I've made about $1 so far - ha ha. I really love writing though - my husband keeps telling me I spend too much time on the computer!
Hi Rebecca, I hear you and I have been at it for about 5 months and I write for about 6 different sites and I am trying to put a book together. It is so time consuming but I can't think of anything else I would rather be doing so I will continue to read as much as possible and stick with it and hopefully it will pay off. Thank-you for writing this hub it is so important to hear from others the truth instead of these people going around and saying how they have just made one thousand dollars in a week right from the start!
Well said, I am going to place a link on my Die or envy or make money online article here on the hub. This was very informative. It is true what is said about owning one's own business. "I'd rather work 16 hour days for myself than 8 hours for someone else." ...and you will but if you love it, it will not feel like work!
Hi Rebecca, thanks for all your excellent and practical hubs on how to make money with hubpages.Im still with my day job and still to earn money from my hubs.Just wanted to know, how do we put other people´s links in our hubs as additional and corresponding information the same way that you put the information with bullet points, vene if as in this case the links belong to the hubber??Best Regards
Thank you for a helpful hub. GBY
Very well put, too many people do not want to dedicate themselves to what is necessary to make money online...even if you tell them exactly, EXACTLY what to do!
Yes, from my experience on line of a little more than a year, your estimations of making money are realistic. I'm new to Hubpages, and am just finding my way around, so thanks for helping me see I know what to do. Now do it!
I like what Ana Louis said about writing keeping her sane, yet it is a challenge to sit down and do it with all that goes on on the home front.
Thanks Rebecca, I got the message loud and clear. Success on the net doesn't come easy, it's work in multiples. A lot of people don't tell the truth when advertising their products they will write misleading statements.
Interesting. Thanks Rebecca E :)
Hi Rebecca ,
Great and informative hub like naything worhwhile it takes work but the rewards can be great. Here are a few more ideas
Thanks for a good wake up call -- it's not the "easy" job it appears to be. But sounds like if you pay your dues in terms of hard work, there will be rewards at the end.
Oh yes, definitely want to quit my day job! LOL Thanks for a great article!
I've made money online (not very much)and U know some things about affiliate marketing and such but even though I have read a lot and getting to the point that I don't here much I don't already know, I have a really hard time implementing it and getting results.
Again , a great HUb... full of usefull information, I will have to keep coming back to this in the near future too, At the moment I don't know what it is I am doing wrong - maybe am just writing poetry and don't expect to 'earn' .... though I f I did put my mind to it and dedicated at least 4 hours daily I am sure I'd be on my way to a more succesfull journey on money making hubs...
I am lacking somthing, somewhere and cannot figure out what (I wont say am not good--am ok) but I have to be doing something wrong to not have earned nothing and have been here 11 months .
:) Rebecca thank you for a great hub
This was very useful to me as I was beginning to feel a bit disillusioned after 6 weeks LOL. I am like bladesof grss and can't get my head around SEO, backlinking etc..where do you learn all that stuff?
Very informative great hub!
nice article.........
A well written and very useful article. Thank you!
Writing is an art. So quitting the day job and start writing will be a dangerous idea. I do it as part time.
SEO is the key to everything. It's getting harder and harder to do it since google commercialised links and sites are adding nofollow to everything... :(
Rebecca, You're so right! It takes years to really produce an income from blogging. SEO is really a science; in my 5 years online, I've never really figured out the secrets of Adsense to generate a good revenue stream.
But our success lies in our willingness to keep trying. So keep up the good work!
Hi Rebecca,
Wonderful advice, Thanks.
Well, this is certainly one of the more honest hubs I have read on how to make money online. I have almost concluded it is not possible to make any real money doing this, but you might prove me wrong.
I was searching for an online opportunity because I had my hours cut on my day job. Quickly saw it wasn't going to happen as fast as I would like but have fallen in love with the process and satisfaction with the writing. A new experience for me. I hope I start seeing some money come in but loving it even if it never happens. Nice Hub though and I like reading these for encouragement. Rating it up.
Rebecca. Really great, straightforward, easy to understand, no BS Hub. thanks!
You are spot on and I can attest to it. One site I've spent 6 to 7 years on, part-time, and it is returning $1000 to $2000 per month. Now, I just need to do that a few more times.
I actually like my day job, but I look at this as helping me build my retirement nest egg.
So basically, keep writing, build up a nice amount of interlinked hubs..that should do the trick? I'm fairly new at this, but believe me I would exchange my day job for sitting at home and writing all day.
So basically, keep writing, build up a nice amount of interlinked hubs..that should do the trick? I'm fairly new at this, but believe me I would exchange my day job for sitting at home and writing all day.
sounds good
Very helpful :)
Thanks!
Great information and advice! Very well said.. if we want to succeed at any business venture we must be willing to put our heart and soul into making it! Good luck in your continued success!!
Thank you again Rebecca for another great hub! What an opportunity we all have here at hubpages to create a passive steady income. I feel blessed to have stumbled upon hubpages and become a part of this community. I know the money won't happen over night, but I'm willing to work hard and be patient for the checks to start coming in!
another informative hub, thank you. All this has just reconfirmed I have a lot to learn. Links make absolutely no sense to me, haven't a clue how to do it. I can read all the mumbo jumbo but unless it actuall "clicks" and makes sense, it is of no help to me. Nothing is clicking yet. lol I guess I will try to find a video that shows me what to do. Thank you for your time and effort in giving us sound advice. :)
Thanks for the info. This will keep me trying
Very clearly spelled out and good tips. Thank you.
The promise of working online is that you put a lot of labor into something, but eventually you are able to scale it and maintain income for a much lower of work. Then you wash and repeat to increase your income. If I had to struggle at 50 hours a week, and there was no possibility of scaling and increase (i.e., at some point the $1,000 you make takes much less time a month...your efforts are at raising your income), this seems like not a terribly good way to make a living.
Seems like a lot of this is true. Reach for the stars.
"Are you willing to pay the price to make the money to quit your job?" It's sad but many people are not willing to pay this price...but its soooo worth it in the end!
Thanks Rebecca E. I rated up and useful. Thanks for taking the time to break it down.
nice hub
I don't know how you do it. I don't have a day job ( unless you count all the people I have to take care of), and I can never seem to find time for the one thing that keeps me sane - writing. I appreciate your honest advise. It has me thinking and planning. Thank you.
Hey, Rebecca. I couldn't have put it better than you. This online making money thing isn't for impatient people who always try to find shortcuts or a glitch in the system of good hard work. Of course I agree with you in each area here.
I rated this up, awesome, and useful. If there was a button for HONEST, I'd have pressed that too! Great work my friend, great work, honestly :D
I would say this is a nice, realistic view of working online in general. I began earning in year two, doubled that in the next year, and the next as well. I am starting year 5 in a month or two, and finally, it's becoming an online income not just some spending money.
Hi Rebecca,
Once again you outdid yourself. Super Hub. Rebecca, a long time ago I heard what LUCK really was: Luck is when PREPARATION meets Opprotunity. You definitly qualify.
Very well put, Rebecca. While a lot of what I have written (mostly, my "unofficial" challenge thing) contradicts what you have said, it is by no means a permanent stream of passive income, and I have tried to say time and time again that you can make a lot more by going out and getting a job in the short run than you can with input from the same number of hours. While $1,000 in a month sounds great to everyone who has read my hubs, it wasn't until about the last week of my challenge that everyone realized how much work it was, and what 80 hours of optimization for 10 measly hubs really meant. I wish I could have said it as eloquently as you have put it here! Thanks a lot!
I wanted to leave this online day job and wanted to work from home. But very difficult.
This is so true! Last night I was vacuuming under the sofa at about 9pm and I thought I never did that when I had a day time job - but now there is hardly such a thing as down time.
Now back to work - hi ho, hi ho (singing)...
Thank you for the information. Have recently started blogging and writing for Hubpages, so am still very much in the 'learning stages' as well. it is all very overwhelming at first, because you hear different things from dofferent folks, but I think at the end of the day, what you put in is what you will get out :-)
I can't quit my day job yet, need to write more hubs and blog a lot, and promotion... in the mean time ...i enjoy reading hubs like yours. thanks for providing informative hubs ... MJ
Great hub, thanks for telling it like it is...
Excellent information and I appreciate your advice. Thanks. Good hub.
That is real life ! Another possibility would be to create a funnel - combine writing with affiliate marketing or a MLM opportunity promoting the product. But also the creation of the marketing funnel takes time, persistence and money at first.
This was beautiful Rebecca. It made the writer in me proud. You spoke truth once again. Boy do you have to work hard if you quite your day job. Sadly my job left me though I really did not plan on leaving it. It also took a bit to finally decided writing was going to be my new career and I was serious this time. I had saftey in unemployment so I could focus on builing my writing career back up from the bottom. Still even that ran out before I got really established. Amazingly though I got some writing gigs and money is coming in. This was not luck though for I worked hard to beat the odds against me. It is really important that people know the hard work you have to put into this.I love writing so this has been nothing but a joy for me. Oh stumbled this!
This is a great article. It gives me a measurement and direction for making this my full-time job. I just started writing hub pages and I am not afraid of hard work. Thanks for your candid discussion about writing for the internet and making money too.
I am glad you touched upon the subject that becoming sucessful in making money online by writing doesn't happen overnight. I have seen a lot of people give up rather quickly and in some cases it was sad because they were good writers,.. just impatient. I am a strong believer you get what you give,.. if a person gives it their all, remains determined and puts in the hard work,.. it will pay off for them in the long run. A lot of great advice here in this hub, hope a lot of newby's get a chance to read it.
Great information. I am a freelance writer as my occupation so Hubpages is just a nice outlet for me to write about what I want to write...rather than what someone is paying me to write. Of course...that being said, the residual income is definitely a plus but it certainly isn't what my goal was when I started. I really enjoy Hubpages and I would love to get one day where I can solely write for myself on here and not for other people. :)
Having made a living writing for years, HubPages and affiliate marketing is a new experience for me. For now, it's an adjunct work in progress and I'm lucky that I love to write. I see this as just one piece in marketing my work and my writing on the web and I'm patiently waiting for it to slowly build passive income. Thanks Rebecca.
You always are right on the mark with your information. I would love to quit my day job and make a living writing. I knew it would be hard but you have make it much clearer just how hard. Great hub as always.
Great information and advice, thank you.
Very clearly spelled out and good tips. Thank you.
My love...
People would think that I say things about your hubs because I love you, but it is this dedication and wonderful focused hubtivity of yours that make me admire you, apart from a whole bunch of other qualities you possess. This hub is down to the point, well-oriented, nicely penned and quite useful!
Rated up and useful, bookmarked and Stumbled!
Warmest hugs and zillions of pure kisses, lots of love and light and infinite heavenly blessings,
Yours only,
Your sunshine,
Your Al
Hi, Rebecca. This is a realistic hub. You always tell it like it is and when you write that it takes time and energy to make money online when writing hubs and articles, you are spot on.
Some folks become disheartened when they don't start making money immediately but it takes hard work and research, a lot of reading what works for others and patience, too.
Keep on telling it like it is!
Hi, Rebecca. You have expalined it perfectly once again, but it is indeed tough news to hear for folks pinning their hopes on writing online. You expressed it quite well by pointing out that it is helpful to become an "online expert" in your niche (or field). I recently read a book along those lines and I believe the term used was "trust broker" (??). It is a huge step to get to this point, but then things start to fall into place. I am nowhere near where I want to be, but I am plugging alone, hoping someday to get to the promised land.
Thanks (as always) for your help and advice.
Mike
Oh how I want to quit my day job. Not yet but I'm getting there, I think. Thanks for the sound advice as usual.
Hi Rebecca, Great hub :) I don't write to make money mainly because I'm not good enough to do so yet. But if I did your advice would be a great help thank you
have a great day....

thoughtMonkey-- i try to make sure peope understand that it is a time thing but it is also a thing where there are more ups and downs than you can imagine
