My Earnings Suck! Five Reasons Why and How to Fix Them
73Why Oh Why Me?
The most important thing to many people is making money online. What most people hate is when they lose their money from whatever program or revenue sharing site they are on. They lose money, and then complain loudly "my earnings suck!"
Then there are the other ones, the new writers on a writing site, who make exactly one article or page or whatever and bemoan the fact that they are not making any money. They have not even begun their business and are already whining. "My earnings from (insert affiliate program here) and I can't figure out why!"
So what if your earnings "suck"? At some point in this world you have a choice: are you going to fix them or are you going to continue to whine about it?
If you are going to fix them there are five major points that you need to fix, and they are not easy fixes, but they need to be done.
Earnings Problem #1
You are either using too many keywords, or have not used them properly. Too many keywords and the search engines will ding you in the end, too few and you will not be found on searches.
Keywords: If you have not used Google AdWords Keyword tool now is a good time to do so. You will also need to be linked in with Google Analytics. These two are important steps to fixing your keywords. You will need to have a hub which you think should be preforming well and you will need to read it out loud.
It should "sound" real. If you use the same word over again in less than two sentences you are keyword stuffing and it is not worth any one's time to even read for a long time. Unless you have traffic, which does not read your work, then most people have a need for something of value.
Fix: Copy and paste your work on any word processor. next print it out, this is where you can edit your work anywhere you like. Once you have done this, edit your writing (your content) on hubpages. This is important as the next step means that you will use a keyword tool. ( any sort will do, but using Google AdWords keywords tool is a good one)
* Using a keyword research tool and your actual hub compare and find out what specific keywords you are using and what, if anything should look strange, having too few keyword choices, then you need to add more original content to make people actually feel your work is of use.
* Improve your layout on your site, you need to focus on your content and then on your keywords and your title. Content and layout before anything else. If you use amazon capsules be very specific and write content to go with them.

Problem #2
Earnings oversight: This is not a simple fix, but the problem is that you either overestimated your potential earnings from Google, or you underestimated your earnings. Either one is a problem.
Fix: Since over estimation of earnings is a much more common problem than underestimation, I am focusing on the former.
* When using a keyword research tool, understand what is a good keyword, versus what is a high priced keyword. For example, a keyword which seems to get "high earnings" might with a bit of common sense, be a poor choice, after factoring in click through rates and overall types of competitors.
* You are focusing too much on daily earnings, whereas you need to take a long term look at what is covered with your Google AdSense or other affiliate programs. In other words, you need to use Google Analytics or other analytics tools to see where exactly you you are getting your traffic.
* Plan. You have been talking about it, and looking at stats and fixing yoru work, but you have to have some sort of plan to get better. This means writing out a basic long-term plan, which should follow the stats you have aquired fromy oru blogs and websites.
Problem #3
Too many choices: You have a million websites out on the Internet and you need to get people to your work, and you have to make some choices. At this point you have not. You don't have a plan. In fact you are not sure about how to increase traffic to your many websites in any coherent plan.
Fix: Write out a plan. This is also in fix it #2.
* Create a Niche, and decide how long to focus on that niche. If this is writing, or money or a larger niche which you want to target, you will need to learn to promote several things over the course of years. Keyword research, SEO, and marketing in general are a must for larger niche categories.
* Build a brand, it is like writing a book if you know the idea behind your books, you can build a brand. One only needs to mention a last name such as "King" and people know whom you are talking of in this case. Build this brand for yourself.
* Build another niche, fnd a smaller niche such as publishing online or a niche like that, then expand. This way you can learn on a smaller scale. Having 20 hubs on online publishing is a lot easier than needing 100 hubs on writing.
Problem #4
You don't know and/or you don't care: This is a knock not on the people who have just started, but rather the people who have been around for a while, and nothing that they do seems to make money or increase their earrings.
Fix: This is by far the hardest fix for anyone who has been online for a while and then finds the need for change to their websites or blogs. While change is constant, it is not easy.
* Go back and re-edit your websites and other information. This can include where you place your AdSense ads, to spelling and grammar.
* Ask people to be honest, after a fix up. Sometimes, it is a matter of asking people to say "a looks good, but "b" does not. Fix it again
* Care again. No, this is not about money, rather it is getting your passion back for your business. "Everything" can be either your business model or cyclical slump, care enough to find out and fix it. Care enough to figure out what is working, and fix what isn't.
Problem #5
Traffic and Traffic, and T-R-A-F-F-I-C! If you are trying to focus on making money online, or more specifically trying to increase traffic. Trying to increase traffic can be a challenge, but then again, you need traffic to make money... or do you?
Fix: This is complex and yet at the same time it is not. Diversification is key, or your earnings can take a huge hit. So if you are having trouble with traffic start by doing these few things:
* Diversification is key, for example: Adding an online article to e-zine is good, but adding several different articles to e-zine is better, but the best is adding several articles to several article directories, which allow you to link to your websites. If one of these directories take a "hit in traffic" then you still have other to rely on.
* There is more than one search engine you need to think about. While Google does hold about 70% of the searches, there are other search engines as well. You would be advise to look into them as well as into the Google search engine.
* Traffic comes and then drops, so do not expect it to always rise. It will go up and down, but use as many analytics as you can to find out what works best for you.
* Interlinking your websites is also meant for traffic and not just for SEO. The point is that the longer people STAY on your websites, the more chances for money. Sometimes, it is about your readers.

It is often the changes that you can not control which have the biggest effect on your business. Yet, if you have knowledge of what does work for you, which is writing content, building links, having a plan, you will do better than most.
Learning a business is not a simple as some make it out to be.
If SEO scares you then you have a long way to go. Learning keywords and how they can effect your writing is a primary concern. Learning how to increase traffic, or maintain traffic is as important as before.
It is a learning process, and while you are publishing online, you are also build a business, and also thinking long-term your business as a way to make a living.
To your success.

You always offer outstanding advice. You must be the resident expert on HubPages in regard to these topics. Thank you for helping others by your gracious heart.
Rebecca, I am bookmarking your Hub! Problem #5 is one of the biggies new writers have to face. It's not just about submitting to social bookmarking sites or search engines - it's about your content. You forgot to mention that having a mix of evergreen and seasonal content is helpful for attracting visitors!
Anyway, this Hub is worth recommending!
A great hub indeed.I totally agree with constant revision of articles> I am focussing on making my present articles better structured before I get back to writing full on.The ones I have revised are scoring better now.Great article.
Rebecca, great hub! This really has helped me out being that I am new. Your such a gifted writer and I can't wait to read and learn more from you. Many thanks.
I would have to say that while I might agree with earnings being bad I would also say that you have some points to ponder. Would you put this on social networking sites or would you work it to get more search engine traffic to this blog?
lol its umar. ok i'll review my hubs and will try to expand upon them. thanks for the suggestion
i am a newbie here, and i found your hub to be pretty useful. any suggestion for me?
Oh man. I've only been on HubPages for 7 weeks. SEO and e-zine are completely foreign to me! I need someone to walk me through this stuff! ;) Thanks for exposing me to what I need to quickly get familiar with!
The answers I can select for your poll are a little strange and don't quite make sense to me. I would also ask "What's the purpose of the poll, to the reader?" Why would I find it interesting to see how people responded to the poll? I can't quite answer that in your poll above.
I find it ironic how the "how to write online" hubs get so much attention. It's almost that writing about how to write gets a person more traffic than some other content might!
Hey Rebecca, helpful hub
What about your Hub score, does that have any effect on earnings? It looks to me like it is mostly a measure of the Hub community rather than commercial success?
Thanx for this hub
Thanks for this wonderful, concise and helpful post. I really needed some of these hints. I'm grateful to you.
I am just a newcomer in writing articles and blogs and does not yet know how to find the right keywords to use. Your hub has given me some insight.
I have run into a wall and just wrote a Hub about statistics and what they can tell you. It is a "rubber meets the road" kind of post with some idea that might work. I am linking to this blog and sharing it on Stumbledupon. You have some great stuff here. I would be interested in seeing your websites if you are willing to share.

Great hub and fantastic ideas shared. The problem with many people is that they want to get stuck in, instead of giving themselves time to learn. Making money online is a process, and involves as much work as becoming a professional in any other field. Learning from out mistakes makes a huge difference.
Your article has motivated me to revisit my hubs and tweak them with a few necessary fixes. Voted up, and thank you!
Just had to come back and read this great hub again, Rebecca. Each time I review it, I learn something new!
I am working on something new and I hope it turns out well. When I do; I will report about it here. Great article and Thanks..
Good hub that emphasizes how complex it is to make money writing internet content. This provides a good reality check and specific steps to take for improvement. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and insights.
I always revisit and tweak my hubs and blog articles to make sure they are in tip top shape.
Interesting way of looking at it. So how important are low quality links to you?
As usual a good read. I would say the bulk of my problem is #5 (at least that I am aware) but submitting URLs to search engines or backlinking seems to be additional problems for me. Any input you have for one of my hub would be welcome...thanks again
very informative hub keep it up
My earnings from Google Adsense were doing just fine until 24th February. Then as we all know Google changed the goal posts. I will just keep writing my best work and I am sure my earnings will recover soon!
Great advice here--especially about using a keyword tool to isolate good high paying low competition words to make money online.
You always my teacher. I like your tips above. Traffic is the most important thing in online business. Thanks for share with us. Rated up as usual.
Prasetio,
A great hub. It is all a headache when starting. I am still a novice when it comes to SEO and back linking. But this week I promise myself I will slow down on my content to learn.
great hub, Rebecca- i think that we all have differing views on making money- some would say with my portfolio I should make more; but it is the writing that I enjoy- I do follow your tips and i think the diversification tip is very key. We have all taken a hit the last few weeks; but actually my traffic is up but from the UK where they don't click!
Glad to see you are fighting fit!
Rebecca just like Harlan my primary goal here is not making money, I did however feel great when I found out someone had clicked a link starting the payment process. I have been trying to get my hubs more like the better ones, with pictures and maps. I hope my editing has made them more readable. Video just isn't something I know much about and for now am not willing to learn even though I know my SEO would be better if I did. I really enjoyed Harlan's hubs, and think we need to ask him to be our spell checker. LOL
Just goes to show you nobody's perfect. LOL He is right the word "this" is spelled wrong right where he says it is. Better not use me for a spell checker for your work. LOL
Wheelinallover says they found no spelling errors. I found one! ( So what if your earnings "suck"? At some point in thsi world you have a choice: Thsi = this.) but only one! Regardless, I bookmarked this hub. I mostly write for the fun of it and don't worry about the money. But over time I will get serious, I know me.
- Thanks Reb.
- Harlan
Now this is the reason I follow you Rebecca. Very understandable and pull no punches. 100% usable information. I also didn't find a single spelling error, but wouldn't have cared if I did. Keep up the good work. Voted up and awesome!!!
great article, ya i just started out about a week ago and iv got a few people looking at my articles i even got my first follower yesterday :) but on the down side no one is clicking on my ads mostly cus they don't have anything to do with my articles. Any ideas on how i can make my ads more targeted if i can control them at all
As always I take notice of you tips and hopefully it gets me a bi up the ladder.
My earnings on AdSense have always just crawled along but I feel fortunate to be making anything at all. I enjoy writing and am adjusting many recent hubs to help Google like us once again. I'm rooting for HP to pull it together. Good hub.
Very good info, as I am relatively new to hubbing, I am constantly reading up on what I need to do to become successful. I really have enjoyed being part of the Hub Community and reading other Huber articles. Thanks for the info you have shared.
Thanks for some really good tips.
Thanks, Rebecca, for these tips. I'm bookmarking this article to use as a reference.
Great reminders and fine tuning. If I could just turn the corner. Thank you Rebecca.
This is a very practical hands-on hub and surely at least 1 of the five fixes to problems should help. Thanks, Rebecca
I love this line: "If SEO scares you then you have a long way to go."
I love your no nonsense, pull no punches straight talk in this one Rebecca. There's a lot of info here, I'm going to have to read it again. Thanks!
Sound advice. Some of which I haven't yet put to use. Studying your google analytics is worth just as much time as you put into what you write.
Great advise as always Rebecca. Everytime I read one of you hubs I learned something new or I am nudged in the correct direction. Great job. Rated up and useful.
Rebecca E, everytime I read your hubs and instruction I get something new that I can use - this is no different.
Based on what you said, I will work on one thing this week: get more traffic!!!!! More backlinks.
Dear Rebecca, Just as your other hubs on the subject this one also is a lot useful. Can you please tell the average number of keywords (just a rough guide) for a 500-600 word article. Thanks.
Great article, Rebecca! I have to tweak my hubs a little but my greatest concern is my linking strategy. I am doing a lot of research about it recently and stand firm in my attempt to succeed.
I have to notice that you have less spelling mistakes in this article :) Nice to see that you are improving yourself :)
Rebecca, I have learned from your hub. I guess what's hardest from me (I'm one of the ones that just started and I am frustrated :-( ) is that, in a way, it is like a business like you mentioned. And I'm not as familiar as I need to be with the whole "marketing" part of this. For example, I think I did in fact include too many keywords...I have not used this tool effectively AT ALL. I will be doing some revisions. Thanks for the hub - I identified with it.
good tips, my earnings are not doing too well. I still don't understand how to use the keyword system properly.
Nice one Rebecca. Thank you. My earnings can rocket some days causing me to believe I have hit the right track. Never consistent though. Rocketing is caused by something in the news which causes people to use a search term which includes my hub. Take care.
As always, Rebecca, your hubs are right on the money. (no pun intended :) I always learn such exciting tips from you. You are a treasure and a guide to so many people. Very grateful for you and the way you are willing to share your talent. Love and warm thank you's. vocalcoach.
Under "Earnings Problem #1" you misspelled "the." Good Hub otherwise.
up, useful and beautiful! Much goood information here. As always Rebecca, you inspire me.
I have been using keywords and following a lot of the recommendations you have made in the past but I still think I need to improve my writing skills. Since I had surgery on my hand I am using Naturally Speak which requires extra critiquing before I post the hub.
It also seems picking a good topic is more important than ever as Hubpages has made me fix two hubs recently which never happened in almost a year until now. One hub was based on a seminar I went to including the pamphlet they gave me; I listed a lot of help sites at the end of the hub for people with this problem to find further resources and because those help sites are listed all over the internet they assumed I plagiarize them so I had to remove them. I found this very frustrating as I have never plagiarized anything.
Appreciate the tips in your hub as they are always helpful. Voted/rated up.
One of the most important points you made, Becca, in this excellent hub is that writing online articles, wherever you wish to post them, is a learning process. You cannot get rich overnight and you have to be patient and keep writing to be successful. And keep learning. And keep fixing that which needs to be even better.
Very good read, Rebecca E - regular reviews of content is something I've yet to master. I suspect going back and regularly (monthly?) reviewing struggling content can mean a good boost to traffic if done diligently.
Rebecca - while earnings are not the driver of my writing,(political opinion and poetry are not big sellers) the writing that I do oriented to that purpose are under constant review and revision to make them better, good info much appreciated.
