How Can This Be In Here: Hub Says My Content on Hubpages is a Duplicate (The Same)? What Is And Does that Mean for You?
68"Why is there a red word duplicate under one of my hubs?" The simplest answer form both Uninvited Writer and Duchess Oblunt were that there was too much content that could be found on other websites, hence duplicate content.
Does duplicating content really a huge factor in quality? Will it change your earnings? Should you care about it?
It does matter. To Many websites and to search engines.
the biggest effect is less traffic and by default less money. The more traffic you can get on an original content hub,The more people are likely to give positive feedback and this can get a career in writing or on hub pages moving. So what is duplicate content then?
Duplicate content is a flag on hub pages that a writer of a hub will get when the hub has much of its content from another source. For example copying a portion of a blog you wrote would be duplicate content as someone would be able to find it elsewhere on the web, it was published sooner on a blog you wrote than on a hub. Make sense?
So how do you write original content? simple, I like to play what if games, if something happened to A what would happen to B? I'll compare something with something else, I'll answer a request (see answer section) I'll look in the Idea bank in my account.
Because there are a lot of ways to paste comments to a hub without getting the dreaded red mark on your hub, add more comments, show some insight, make it user friendly, with links and polls, but write different content. Also, duplicate content is not allowed here.
This will help but it's the content we need to think about. What is the right percentage?
The number factor in duplicate content
In terms of percentages I'll use a low number that everyone can understand 100 words; ( Don't write such a short hub, you'll get flagged for something else-- too short!) Also, a hub is a website and not a blog, so something with 800 words is just right.
I go with the no more than 30% should be copied content, if that. So in other words: 30 words or LESS out of the 100 words you write can be found somewhere else. Especially not on a blog or website you have. There is also copyright issues, such as when you post parts of it on a website, say like e-zine articles, where people can use your work-- provided the link is retained-- which is your content?
Also think of this way, if you want people to go to your blog or website, what happens if they see the same content there? Well, they certainly won't go to hub pages or worse, to your blog that you've worked so hard on right?
So best idea: If it's something you want people to read, make it original, and take some time to write it. In the long run it will do two things for you: Increase your traffic and make some money for you. The fact that most website will not allow you to have duplicate content on them only proves that they see the point of original content being the most important thing to consider.
Writing Hubs is similar to Blogging, the more original content you have the better your traffic and potential for other things increases.
Duplicate Content? Do You Understand?
See results without votingGoogle Factor
Notice that your websites which have a lot of duplicate content don't seem to be doing as good? Or the duplicate content you've got (or have found copied content of your work) isn't getting traffic. You need to get rid of duplicate content.
It may not seem like much, but there is a Google factor. The search engine changed its formula and content is once again the most powerful factor. Not only that if your content is duplicate this is even worse in the eyes of Google. (as it is now on hubpages.)
The Google factor should not be your only reason for avoiding duplicate content, but also you will make more money online with original content than you would with duplicate content.
To your success.

Found this hub due to reading of Flora Breen Robison's experience of having her bio stolen. Thanks for the helpful info!
I can't get a hub published to save my life. Even original articles I wrote myself come back with the red 'duplicate' under them. It's really disheartening. I'm like 0 for 7.
What if I literally reworded every sentence in an article that I wrote? Would that be considered unique content?
Ok here is the issue, I wrote 6 hubs, ALL ORIGINAL CONTENT TO HUBPAGES. Five days later I went and advertises the hubs all over the net. As any good content writer looking for new traffic does. Now a week later all 6 of the hubs are flagged as duplicate content. That is crap, Hubpages was the first place I put the articles, what we can not share our content or advertise it now???? I am 1 step from leaving hubpages for ever. This is borderline aggressive bullying of Hubpages moderators and I am sick of it, anyone got any ideals whats going on here??
I got the warning on one of the Hubs yesterday. Have unpublished it, not sure if I should rephrase it or completely get rid of it. You've done a great done of explaining the concept, I'd like to know where you got the 30% figure from.
Thanks for the information. I will pass it along.
Hasn't happened to me yet, but I have just started blogging so this was a timely read for me... thank you
Duplicated content is a huge myth, i have a lot of site that only exist out of dup content and more then once i outrank the original content, people should not by so tight up in the dup content myth if you ask me.
Don't get me wrong unique is always better, but there is no such thing as a dup content penalty
This is great Rebecca. I got a duplicate on a hub this week, and am thinking of ways to re-write it. Thanks for having the answer before I had the question!
Many hubpage writers used to include articles that they wrote at another site. I know I was guilty of that too. And yes I felt awful. I still have several and have rewritten several and it has made no difference at all.
So I have left them now simply because one of my biggest earners (not that it earns lots) is one of the duplicate ones that I repeated in hubs.
I agree definitely write original content though. You can still use similar topics. As lizzie wrote in a hub: you can use the same topics 6 0r 7 different ways and angle them for different traffic.
Rebecca..you said it all..uniqueness is the key for better traffic...This is exactly what I found out when writing hubs..the less copied content and more original and unique content the more traffic as well as comments..
Thanks Rebecca E
People must realize that Hubpages is for unique content. You can submit articles to various article distribution sites and they will not be flagged. Hubpages is not one of them They pride themselves in giving their readers unique content. Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention.
nice
Thank you Rebecca E. for explaining duplication. Sometimes we are not even aware that we are duplicating our own work. This is a great hub. Thanks again.
Thank you Rebecca for very valuable hub, thank you for sharing info. blessings. creativeone59
Well, Rebecca, I have used content from a blog of mine, but have yet to get the dreaded duplicate flag. I suppose I've worked the hubs enough to be considered unique!
Thanks for this.
A good hub. I had this happens once and simply deleted the hub and chose another approach to the topic by creating a short story out of the non-fiction prose article.

RTalloni-- this is a frustrating thin, but you need to keep on top of it, not only that I think that if you have copied content this can make a huge effect on your earnings and your rankings in the search engines.
