Trying So Hard to Make Money Online on/with Hubpages, Big Problem... Why? No, Not a Cent, What I am Doing Wrong?
71Trying to Make Money on Hubpages... Now
Help I am Trying to make money on hubpages! I have a lot of hubs, and not a lot of money.. in fact nothing not a dime. This is a common complaint that many hub writers face at some point. Now, with Google AdSense and all of this business, writing does seem to take a "backseat" to how to make money here on hubpages.
Now this person who asked the question stated that they have not made a dime, or a penny or anything else since they have been here. This is admittedly a problem, when your goal is to write for a financial freedom and your business plans are lost in the fog, you have every right to complain. Again making money is something we all want to be doing.
Still, this question also asked what was wrong with the hubs they have...
Traffic and Presentation
This is a business where text, or content, or your writing needs to follow certain ideas. Too long and you will not see success, too short and no one will stay for any length of time to make you money. There is also something called the business of presentation and traffic.
The truth of the matter is people love to be entertained and they will pay to be entertained with pictures and videos and quizzes and polls. They want to see something that they never saw before. Or at least something they think they never saw before and then find it so useful they will spend the money they have.
If you want to make money you need to think somewhat like a retail business where store front presentation will get your customers in. Then, after you have people in your store it is up to your content-- what you have published to make people stay. What do you need to look for in a hub?

Increase Traffic...Hints
Here are a few things to look for in hubs that will drive traffic to your hub or take it away:
1) Break down of your content: Most of my readers probably do not know my hubs are on the high end of the hub word count. (For the record my how to hubs are about 1,000 or more words) but often most readers do not seem to notice. Why? I break down my content into 200-400 word sections.)
2) Having a photo right at the top of the hub: This is something that I have noticed that makes a big difference with a hub, as often, if you go online to a hub all you see on the page is a picture and without a caption. This is good, except that the google rectangular ad is then lower, and it is hard to want to scroll down only to find more pictures. About 200 words will do and then a photo with a caption.
3) Not having links especially between your hubs: There are great hubs out there, really great hubs, often better then my own, except that i link between my hubs to increase traffic. Some great writer do not. There is a link capsule for a reason, as not only can it break a text, if you put hubs that are similar close to the text you are focusing your readers to.
4) Nothing extra beyond a basic thing: Look, you can put videos and polls and quizzes and amazon and eBay, you need to do this. and you need to do it on hubs that you want to promote. There is no two ways around it. Add something that people will want to do, beyond comments!
Those are basic what else do I need to do?? I need Money NOW!!
You also need traffic. You need a lot of traffic to make a lot of money in this business. There is a thing called social networking and SEO... these are musts if you want to make money on hubpages.
Use the power of social bookmarking to your advantage, Stumble and Digg other hub writers to maximize this network. I personally will put a note that says that I have stumbled and "Dugg" a hub, use as many sources as you can, but also use places such as Xomba and RedGage and She Told Me, and page 360 and comment there on people's hubs.
It makes a huge difference in traffic. I make it a point to stumble five other hub writers hubs each day, in hopes to help them build traffic. This is a good thing. Help others and you will help yourself.
This will get traffic and will at some point make you money.
I have traffic I am not MAKING MONEY!!! great you have traffic, but where is your traffic coming from? Here is a list of traffic sources and what you might get from them.
Hubpages Traffic: For the most part these are your "reading and commenting" traffic often we hub writer will not click ads, for the simple fact that you can go from one hub to the next and... click on your own ad, which will mean years of hard work are down the drain.
Blog Traffic, Ezinearticles Links: I put these ones together since it is harder to get traffic from these sources without a lot of writing content. Now, It is my experience that I do make a bit of money with both but... but I have a lot of blog posts, and a lot of ezinearticles.
Social Networking Sites: These are sites like Stumble Upon and Digg, they get traffic, they have the potential to get you a lot of traffic... but your work needs to be popular, you have more of a chance to make money with these sites than with hubpages direct traffic.
Other sites, RedGage and sites like that: These do make more money than the above but gain you have to be active in posting your work here. You need to be active in adding your blog post and other things, and you also need to comment on others, same idea as hubpages... The more visible you are the better the chance of making money.
The Search Engines: Anytime you get traffic from Google or Yahoo or MSN (really all of these) and you find it high on your traffic sources begin to do the "dance of joy" as these are the ones which will often make you the money. If money is one of your aims, all three search engines should be in the top five of your traffic sources.
No Money... I Need

I am still not making money: Okay, next thing, look at your hubs again, but this time, look at your tags, a lot of the time, people will write a hub and not really look at the difference a tags ( this is what hubpages calls keywords) in terms of both traffic and making money.
There is a fine art to tags and one thing that will help you is your hub stats. Now, in this case I am referring to an individual hub. Here is a breakdown of what you need to look for.
1) Do you have at least 5 good tags which are found within your hub? Now, I mean if you are writing about making money, is the tag "making money" in your list? If not it needs to be added, or if hubpages doesn't suggest it you need to go back and read your hub and figure out why. Also, look at your hubmetrics, if you have a hub that has a symbol of 1 $ then it means this will not make you as much money as say one with 3 $$$ now, this is a rule of thumb and does not mean you will make a lot of money with the Google Ads you get.
2) Read your hub out loud and see what is missing. This is the fastest way to get ideas as to why you hub is not making money. If you have a title of "how to build a business" and you talk about your new website, do you think, honestly here!, that you will make money in the end? Often The hubs which are "self-serving" are the ones which do not do well. If it helps you and no one else, you will often not make money.
3) Does it offer anything to anyone? Now, this is more of a personal thing, but see if your hub is all text, this is not good, no one likes reading 1,500 words without having something for them, a video is a great thing and so is a poll which allows you reader to voice their views.
4) What about your tags? Are they needed or are you going to AdWords and picking words which seem to be the most "profitable"? yes look into AdWords and the keyword tool, but do not ever expect a a hub without any links or anything for other will make you money.. simply because you decided to use a "high paying word"... for the record the numbers you see on Google AdWords is the highest it can possibly go... and there are a lot of lows.
5) Too many or not Enough? What will make you money... look at your tags some of them say "hot" and well then you are dealing with a popularity contest where the presentation and value is everything. The more tags you have which say "hot" the less likely you will make money, there is a lot of competition
6) Check for one word tags: For example "writing" is very general, but adding the the keyword of say "Writing well" makes a difference as in searches people want something specific... do yourself a favor and do not overuse tags, but use the tags to your search-able advantage.
The last word-- love what you do and be passionate about what you do, success in this business depends on passion but also on saying I can improve.
This means looking at yourself and saying that I can do better. We all can.
To your success.

I've made a few dollars, but not many. If you are not making a cent, then something is wrong . . . tracking number, hacker steeling your traffic "gate", not active.
Obviously, the gig here is affiliate marketing. The most successful Hubbers write about glass bead jewelry and pancakes . . . they sell kits and maple syrup. They also have extensive social networks, and team with others to swamp their site on a daily basis. They have multiple sites and identities. They will work it so two of their avatars banter opposite sides of controversial issues to drive up traffic. These days there are apps, too.
There is one thing you can do. Proof read, especially if you doing instructional hubs.
"There is a link capsule for a reason, as not only can it break a text, if you put hubs that are similar close to the text you are focusing
When writing instructions, use as few words as possible. It must be clear and easy to follow.
"put hubs that are similar close to the text you are focusing" . . . I'm focusing text? No, I'm focusing on text, but that is too wordy for our purpose. The sentence should read more like:
There is a reason for the link capsule. It serves to break up text, and you can place a link to your other hubs.
(I don't think it is necessary to say similar. You can link to a different subject, or to a poem by the same author)
You have to generate your own traffic, of get in cahoots with someone who can. Not a cent?
A lot of great ideas in this hub - and still relevant after all this time. I am working on writing longer hubs and breaking them down into sections like you have here.
This is a very interesting site. The content is very informative and I am so glad that I dropped by.
Very useful!
Great ideas, will take any new information on board if it will help opitmize my hubs. Thank you.
Each time I read one of your posts I learn something. Thank you for the time you take. I saw this post as I was looking around on StumbleUpon. I thought the picture breaks in the article was very interesting...they came at just the right word count.
I was curious if the adsense money I make on hubs is earmarked as coming from that source. I also wished that you had left a url from your blog somewhere in the content even after your signature.
Thank you for your time. I will stumble this again for you.

This post provides it's highly more interesting info here. i really enjoyed it your post. I would like to read newer posts and to share my thoughts with you.thanks for all sharing great info here
Thank you for the info. It will be very useful.I am still learning. Thanks again
Wow.. Amazing hub,, many things I've found from this hubs. I face the problem like you've mentioned above. I hope I can do the best like you. Thanks for sharing much.
Thank you for this very informative Hub Rebcca E.I am still relatively new on here and initially began to write on here because
1.I love writing
2. I had so much to share with others etc I could end up with a very long list of reasons that are very true but of course the other aspect of maybe getting paid for something I love doing was more than a little appealing. Thank you again Rebecca E
very good justification for having 1770 followers - the quality of the writing..
This is a marvelous Hub, Rebecca. Good content will always attract readers, and selling isn't everything. Writing about things that people are interested in and want information, and which is marketable - that can be a gift. there are Hubbers who produce many hubs but have few comments on them, and perhaps some need to step back and see what they need to focus on. Who reads what we write here? Connecting that to an income is the challenge. One well known hubber gets her ideas from the shopping channel! That will work! Yahoo lists the most searched for words on its main page each day. Celebrity sells.
Thanks for a great hub, Rebecca. Rating you up!
Great Hub. I am also interested in this area of stuff. I am currently working on a couple of systems. And some are showing results,...some aren't really. So, i will keep everyone updated on that. (these are internet programs)
thanks rebecca E. - always learning from you and trying to use your advice whenever and as much as possible
Thank you for information. nice hub.
Bookmarked as reference for a friend! Great article.
Excellent! Well written and informative.
wow rebecca! I really love this hub. I'm gonna bookmark it now.
Hi Rebecca, I'm going over the info. from this hub to gain knowledge from its content. Thanks for the info. it provided.
Thanks for the aggregation instrument try to finish it in my hubs!
Great Hub Rebecca E.
Thanks so much for all the terrific information. I have learned so much on how to arrange the Capsules and so many other things. I voted up and bookmarked this hub.
Much of the advice you gave also works for other types of internet promotion. I do not think it is a good idea to rely on any one method to make money online. Different methods can compliment each other too. For example, use your Hub Pages to promote your websites and vice-versa.
Thank you for the help! I am just starting today and look forward mainly to sharing.. and if an income comes, I certainly have to thank you for that! loving hugs..
Marylynn
GOod tips. Also check out popular Hubs and see what they're doing, to follow along their guidelines - -i.e. not copy, just get ideas on setting up modules and links, etc.
I am in the same boat. no money from hubpages . it is strange to say the least since I hear of people making good p/t money
Again, another nice and useful hub Rebecca. Indeed making money online requires time and technique. And giving us your intelligent ideas is very helpful. thanks again. =)
Great stuff many thanks for the insight.
Yes, you hit me right in the heart with this. I'm very new to this online working market. I've always worked outside the home, I've been out of that environment for about two years now and in dire need of something to replace my unemployment income. Had about dozen or so interviews, Well I'm still unemployed and it sucks!!!!
these are some great tips! thanx
Nice Hub! :-)
it was very helpful thanks
Hi Rebecca E - I have been playing with the whole AdSense method of making money for months now here and in other places as well.
My feedback is that you need a whole lot of traffic to get anywhere making money with it and it’s very hard to get to that level for many people because it takes either insider knowledge or a lot of work or a lot of trial and error.
I have been there with all of the above and I know that a lot of people just give up. I am not one of those people though.
I have recently discovered a great way to leverage Hub Pages and a new social networking site that’s ideal for hubbers that I have been writing about this past few weeks.
I have been trying different things and finally found a way to make money using hub pages to promote this new site and also use it to promote your hub pages, it works fantastic and I made more money in the past few days day using this approach than I will make in two years just hubbing.
AdSense revenues for nearly all hubbers is nothing more than scraps from the table. You need to apply solid tactics and work at it to get a decent income from hub pages. Find an angle and crow bar it open!
Quite helpful for a new hubber like me
Rebecca, thanks for the information. I'm pretty new to Hub Pages so anything I can get I am grateful for. I think I might have to "stumble upon" this article for my thank you.
VVVVEEERRRRRYYYYYYYY informative! Thank you!!!
I am 1 day into hub pages with 1 hub posted. Excellent hub, I will utilize the information in my hubbing experience. Thank You
Informative & useful. Thank you.
I think one of the biggest rules to follow on "making money online" is patience. If you have it, you'll most likely make money down the road. But I liked your article. Very informative!
Thanks a lot! I'm gonna go change one of my hubs right now cause it's too long :)
nice information and hope it will be as a guide to learners..
nice research
It really helped me a lot and hope it will be helpful for others also. Thanks a bunch for sharing such useful post with excellent content in it. virtual assistant
Thank you very informative as I feel like I have at least good hubs since I am new to this and I am trying to see why I have traffic and no earnings. Most of my traffic is from search engines which is good but I think I will go back and make some changes and take some of your advice.
I just started with Hubpages and this was very useful to read. I think often the missing link is the traffic. You can have everything perfect in your hub but if you don't have traffic then you are not going to make money.
Thank you for writing this hub. It was very helpful.
Very good to know! I never paid attention to my blog but now I'm back and ready to share. thanks! Check out my hubs and lend a few pointers if possible. Thanks again.
I try not to worry about making money, but write for the pleasure of sharing my thoughts with the world. Thanks for the pointers. Great Hub!
Well Expressed, Well Explained, Well Formed, Well Told Hub. Great work. I have bookmarked it.
I'm always amazed at how freely you share your expertise. We are all richer for your presence here on HP, Rebecca! MM
I know I must sound like a broken record by now, but sound and interesting advice, even if I have to apply it somewhat differently considering most of my hubs are political commentary or otherwise op-ed pieces. I do get a lot of traffic, and I'm getting a lot of organic traffic, mainly from Google, as well...so a little tinker here and a little tinker there so far seems to be working. But like most things, it's an ongoing process of learning, and thankfully your hubs provide some help in that.
Popping my head up with the ususal thumbs up! x
Gosh, you really have fans, almost like Michael Jackson hahaha. I am glad for you.
One two questions that bother me is about ebay. One, I don't get paid? Two, why does Hubpages have a capsule for ebay there?
thank you for great info - my trouble is, I'm not technically minded and find all the terms - 'back-linking' 'AdWords' 'keywords' very confusing - I know you keep it simple but my poor brain just won't take it in :)
Also, I've submitted a couple of my hubs to reddit and when I look at the traffic, a lot seems to have come from there, but overall it doesn't seem to make much of a difference to my lack of earnings at the end of the day!
I always find your work so helpful. Thank you for the advice. I value your hubs greatly.
K9
Wow! I just started a hubpage today. This is some great advice. Thank you!
Okay I make your 1600 by following you in my second ID too.
Hi there. Man! 1600 followers (by tomorow morning), 156 hubs, 96 score.... and still if you say that you are making 'some' money makes me feel like quitting with grace. All we need is 'some' money.
Though you have very useful tips, one question remains is that in reality what is the value of our 4 hours daily we might spend here to achieve something anywhere close to yours. Large question is, is it worth? I mean especially if we are not as great writers or as great an 'idea-bank' like you.
Nice brains and nice job sir!
I am going to put these ideas into practice
Gosh, I never thought I get to the bottom of this. So are you saying because I haven't got a website or blog I don't get paid?
I think I have tried some of the above suggestion which you just listed but not all, like using a social book marking, but yet am not making money most times i get the trafic to my blogs and hubs but yet no money. Can you please review my hubs and tell me what am not doing right. Thanks for the information.
Well, maybe you should try a different website to do it on, or email hubpages
This was a great article. Although I'm new to HubPages, I write for other sites. Your advice is right on target.
Very good information, as always. Thank you.
Thanks for great info, I will now go back and check my hubs against the suggestions you have made for improvement. Thank you!
In-depth, informative and intelligent as always, Rebecca. You're the WOMAN!
Interesting. I've read quite a few of these kinds of articles, and they all mention posting on "social networking sites." Then, they proceed to list a number of them that I've never even seen or heard of, such as the ones in your article. What? I thought Face Book was a 'social networking' site...and Twitter...I do have a link to my hub pages as an e-mail signature, but it does not seem that folks bother to click on it very often.
As a person who writes fairly often, I do not always send a specific e-mail touting my new hub; it seems spammy, and I would not like being on the receiving end of constant 'look at my new piece' e-mails, so I offer the same respect to my friends/acquaintances. Now and then, I'll send an e-mail that says 'just posted a bunch of new items--check them out,' and add a specific link.
Part of the problem for Hub Pages users with incoming traffic is the 'no sign up/no comment' feature. Many, if not most people these days are reluctant to sign up on websites just willy-nilly so they can post a comment.
I've even gone to the effort of explaining that it's free, there's no obligation for THEM to write anything here, and that it helps my hub score...it has not mattered. Only about 3 people have bothered to sign up so they can comment. (And actually, I've had folks tell me that they couldn't even get IN to just read the piece without running across the sign-up monster. I don't think that's HP policy, but it could be a glitch that happens.)
It disturbs me, where we've come as a society, with such short attention spans that people can't be bothered to just READ. All this emphasis on pictures! My word! When I was coming up, by the time you reached high school, picture-enhanced books had faded off the charts. Picture books are for little kids who can't read well yet. I get lost in a 'good read,' and actually sometimes find the addition of pictures distracting, and that goes double for videos!
I'm looking for READERS! So, I guess I will never make any money here, because my views run so counter to the 'marketing trends.' But I guess that will have to be 'ok' because money is not why I came to HP in the first place. I didn't even KNOW about that aspect when I arrived.
Thanks, though, for a well-thought-out article.
Very good information. Saving your hub in my favorites to refer to. Your articles are always so full of great tips.
We can all benefit from information like this. Your advice on using Yahoo, MSM and Google is new to me. I have a blog on google. Is that the same as using google? Hope I'm making sense - (it's 3:00 am yawn). You're the best!
Great ideas Rebecca, I need to study up on this stuff. Thank you for sharing this.
Do you backlink all your hubs??
I think without backlinks hubs don't rank well.
Rebecca, as usual, really superb informations here for building up the hubs exactly to earn good money atleast in the long run, if not immediately. Tons of thanks for good ideas. I equally love reading comments of your hubs and your replies for the same. We indeed gain more out of them. It's very interesting! Keep writing!
Great and well Written Hub. I hope to learn more as I am starting my hub adventure here at HubPages.
This is a lot of good advice and makes me realize just how much work I have ahead of me. My traffic is up and down. Thanks for sharing this detailed information. This will require more than one reading.
Nice hub, Rebecca E. All of your ideas and suggestions make sense and are quite valuable. Thanks!
Easylearningweb
You always have such wonderful advice. You have been more help to me than you will ever know. Thank you.
Voted up and useful. thanks for all the great tips. As somewhat of a newbie, I can use as much info as possible.
Hi Rebecca, you always write good hubs and put some rules of the game in place.
As for me...I think I need more content. Your hubs really helped me to see what I am missing on mine. Now, for example, I learned to be more careful with my tags. Thanks.
So many useful tips. I always learn something more from you Rebecca. Thanks.
Thank you for ironing this out.
Shane
Looks like earning money is soo difficult.HUb don't rank for competitive terms. I wonder how peoples make $1000 adsense and amazon and ebay. no traffic no money.
Thanks for another informative Hub! Rebecca, you lay out the ground rules for Hubbing so nicely. I will pass your words of wisdom on.
Quality content is King! Persistence, consistence and patience will eventually pay off.
I'll bookmark this, but I've got so many things bookmarked that it's hard to find anything in particular. Therefore, the nice thing for me about this hub is that I can reduce it to a simple bullet list and put that where I can refer to it often. Thank you very much, both for the content and how you organized it. (BTW, search engines account for 67% of my traffic, and I'm still not making money. Very frustrating.)
I have much to learn. Thanks!
Simple, concise, well written and easy to digest nice hub here Rebecca, Cheers, Jase
Very helpful tips for making money on Hub Pages.
Very useful and comprehensive information! I will definitely keep these tips in mind as I write my hubs. Thank you!
This is exactly what I've been wondering about. I'll have to check out the sites you've recommended here RebeccaE. Thanks for all the great tips.
My ebay account ask for my 'domain name' what do I put? Laately my numbers of clicks aregoing down like the Titanic. What do I wrong?
Good advice! Funny coincidence, for the past 10 days we have been making a concerted effort regarding tags. Until very recently we thought that tags could only be 1 word long. No idea how we picked up that thought, but it shows how your mind can get stuck. It is always worth reading and thinking about how to improve performance.
Your advice is once again right on the money--I guess literally and figuratively! Your advice about the other sites it important, even though it is sometimes difficult to give each of them the attention they need. I haven't been able to pay as much time to RedGage lately as I would like, which is a shame--I think it is a pretty good site.
I think it's great that you "stumble" five articles a day. If everyone did that, a lot of folks would be doing great.
Thanks again, Rebecca. Your advice is always so helpful.
Mike
Wonderful info as usual, Rebecca.
As always, thanks.
You really addressed all of the issues with money making on Hubpages, really a great hub. My problem is too little content and I need more time, but I am seeing some increase in my adsense revenue from HubPages, so I'm not worried. It will come :)
All good information as always. I just keep working to improve in all these areas. Thanks for your help.
voted up & useful! beautiful, thanks for this hub.
Thanks for the information will try to implement it in my hubs!
So much information packed into one page, but you make it sound 'almost easy' Rebecca, though I am learning that it is not. Thanks again
Thanks for the helpful and inspiring read. I have bookmarked this one. Will do more of what you suggest. If you should happen to look at my Hubs and have some feedback for me I would really appreciate that very much indeed!
Love and peace

WD Curry-- so you fouind a very old hub of mine-- I should really get to fixing it, I couldn't believe it's been nearly 2 years for this hub... so back to work at the fixiing part of it.
Thankfully I've made more than a few dollars myself, but this particular hubber-- i beleive is no longer on hubpages didn't. I do feel sadden they left, they did have great hubs.
