Writing 101: Novel Writing and Publishing A Part of Your Online Business Plan? Rules of Thumb about Writing a Novel
63Should I Dare To Dream Of Publishing My Book?
Publishing a novel is easy- a good writer with a good manuscript will eventually publish a book. Writing a novel is harder, however if you improve your writing your chances of success publishing your book will increase. It is similar to writing a short story but on a much larger scale of writing. Of course it is a business like anything else, so thinking like a business helps a lot, but it helps to take a few points, and keep them in your head.
Novels are something that may or may not become bestsellers. Part of the reason that people love novels is that it is a good way to escape the life that they live right now. A great writer will take a reader away. A book which is well written but does not capture the reader will not. This does not mean that publishing a novel is out of the question but it takes a long time before there will be as much success as with a non-fiction book.
But you should still dream of publishing your book- as long as you have a plan to do this.
Novel Writing
It is important to decide which sort of writing course will help- in essence a novel writing course is of more benefit than a simple writing course. When I first began to write, I of course took some writing courses. I took some through a school and online. This was one of the best way s I learned about how to improve my writing. I learned a lot of self-editing which is a key step to making a potential manuscript something that a literary agent will look at.
Online writing courses are nice, but it's writer beware. A novel writing course is invaluable, since if you choose correctly, you will find that people can and do read the entire novel, and as a bonus comment on it.
I go with this rule of thumb, if five people or more give me the same theme, I need to fix it. Not questions just fix it. I view it as the majority rules.I f one says the plot if to slow and five or more tell me the plot is to fast, for a novel at least, I will take how they said this and when they said this into consideration. It's the little things:spelling, grammar, and editing. Few add descriptor will slow a piece down a bit. But look at what the majority of people need to say. (Ditto/ what they said does not count.) If the theme of what people are saying is the same fix that theme.
Write You're Taking Online Writing Courses...:
Plan to still be writing that novel. Publishing your novel is the goal. Remember this phrase: Publish my novel. Publish my novel. It's important to remain fixed on these goals. It's even more important when writing gets slowed down or harder. I know, there are times when writing a novel needs to take a "back seat" to life. It should, but barring family, and major emergencies, you should write about 750-1500 words per day. This isn't a short story
Tips on Writing a Novel:
okay quick ones here. Take a writing course and then a novel writing course. Write every day, a novel is about 50 upwards of 700 pages. Make it good. Listen to what others say about the work. The novel isn't you, but it is work. Have fun, it's just a novel. Take an online writing course, or an online novel writing course.
This list could go on... but I do have one suggestion:
What is that?
No matter which way you go, (print on demand, self-publishing, traditional publishers) never ever ever lose focus of one thing: A novel needs to be published, and you need to do this... You will need to learn how to improve your writing, from both a editing standpoint to a reader's standpoint. Improving your writing is only one of the things you need to do to increase your chances of publishing your book.
You need to think like a business and focus on what will help you get this novel the marketing and the networking it needs to be a success. Sometimes that will take time, but having a business plan is a must. See, without hard work and dedication and passion your work will never get off the ground. of course we all are in this to be published and to make some money at some point but honestly our writing needs a plan. Writing is a business.
Having a platform where you can showcase your writing is also helpful as well, some great writers here on hubpages publish serials and short stories and find that they not only have a big following for when they will publish a novel they also have a chance to make some money. This platform also allows them to get a wider audience than if they planned to build a writing business from the ground up by publishing their novels.
Still this is a business, and publishing is a must if you are a writer who wants to write for a living. That is the important factor. Writing for a living is a goal all writers share, and publishing is the only way to get to that goal. This of course takes time and effort, but when you love writing, you will set a goal. make your goal as specific as possible if you want to be writing for a living, you need to do this.
It's up to you! To your success.

Rebecca,
I have read several of your articles and find a kind of validation/inspiration in everything you write. I had a quick question for you about "promoting yourself/myself". I too write on hubs and I have three blogs. Personal (http://www.itcrossedmymindblog.com, a retirement blog (http://www.retireinstyleblog.com and a political rant etc. blog (http://www.justgivemethefacts-b.com/). I post all of my articles to twitter and facebook and give as much time as I can to getting out there and commenting, learning etc. I have also used adwords/keywords tools. I own the domains. Now while I do not aspire to great things I love the act of learning to do all these things. Have I missed something? If so would you share with us.
Thank you.

You can do the editing yourself with the right software in your computer. Editors are expensive, they are likely to slice and dice your orginial manual subscription the way you wanted. I recommend you try paying it for yourself by the way of self publishing it.
wonderfull work.
Nice hub...working on one now....thanks. :)
Thanks for this, Rebecca, although I would say to your comment that writing a novel is hard and publishing easy that it's a perspective issue. I've written two novels; neither published. I've submitted to myself that I need to just enjoy the act of writing, because spending tens of thousands of hours writing without that "end" has discouraged me from starting again on another.
Writing on Hubpages is fun, but doesn't fully satisfy that itch ... ;-)
Excellent hub Rebecca. I'm really looking forward to your hub on editing. That's seriously my weak point.
Great info, thanks! I've just signed up for an online writing course which I'm really looking forward to.
This is encouraging. You got me thinking of taking an On-line Writing Course, but these days you don't know which ones are genuine. Some are just out to make money.
I'm not ready to write a book yet but its nice to have a good foundation.
Thanks Rebecca :)
hello Rebecca! wonderful article and very helpful..however, I'm still up for just hubs and short stories :) you guys Rebecca, Scott, itakins, Duchess and Immartin, you're my mentors! along with Maggs, Rochelle and all the others here on HB!!! thank you all for your great intruction and encouragement!
Yes you better dare to dream...This was a nice Hub and very helpful. I really agree with you about being able to absorb criticism and use it to refine your work.
Great hub
Thanks again for your insight Rebecca, and Immartin, I agree with the editor suggestion. I too have a personal relationship with my editor. She's awesome and often get me back on track when I deviate!
If I may add one thing to this great article. Once that novel is written, a professional editor is a great idea. It's not cheap, but one of the best investments in your writing you'll ever make. I have a relationship with an editor and everything I write now goes to her capable hands. An edit isn't just about grammar and punctuation, it's also about plot construction and character consistency -- often things we don't see because we are too close to the subject.
When it comes to publishing, an un-edited manuscript full of grammatical errors, poor punctuation and deviations in plot and character don't stand a chance. An agent, or publisher does not deal with raw material. They want a polished end product.
So thanks so much for this great article and for allowing me to add my two bits worth.
