Passion and Power in Writing: About How Passionate Writing Effects You Makes You (and I) a Better Writer of More Books
72Should the combination passion and power be a part of writing? This is something that you must consider when you write and publish your work. As a writer you have to be passionate about your subject matter and have your writing be powerful enough to make your readers care. Or is it really about making money or simply money? Is our passion about writing a cover for something more? Or is it just a passion for the love of writing?
Or is it for fame? The sense of power that comes with adoring people? or the responsibility of fame? Do we as writers think of that? I think many of us do. Which is why we become passionate and want our writing to be powerful, which makes me ask this question:
Why do we write-- and publish our writing?
On the surface it seems to be a simple answer: Of course I write because I am passionate and love writing, and it gives me a sense of a power to write down my own thoughts and feelings, even if it is just for myself...
I've learned that it's really isn't about my own writing, it's more complex, it's about two things in balance with each other: Power and Passion in Writing.
I'll break it down between the two parts Passion and Power:
Passion: to me there is this bit about passion that seems hard to define. Why are you passionate about something? If you're wanting to write about any subject be it money to how to write to a book I'll ask this what makes it passionate?
Not exactly an easy answer, I mean for me I'm about teaching and learning and a bit of a history buff. I love to write about the past, in particular past oral history.
Passion drives me when I get I can't remember from the source, but expand the search and I can find what I'm looking be it in a map or someone else, who heard it in a story said to them by the very person who can't remember it.
Why do I write about books and other types of writing? I said it before passion to help others. Is this one of the reasons why my writing improves? I hope so. I am always pleased to read a comment, that says they bookmarked my hub. It makes my passion for writing yet another hub all the more stronger.
What about other writers? Can you see the passion in their writing?
Can you see passion in the mundane?
If you write a blog, is blogging a passion? If you do freelance work is it a passion? or is it something more? If not we need to fix it, as it won't help you for the next part.

Power: The more the writer has a sense of their power when they write anything, then there is a power to it.this is where passion become part of power and power, well makes the writing soar. In this case it's not about money, or what it will make when published but what the writer can create in the reader.
I've never heard of excellent books referred to as anything less than "powerful" (Okay same with movies, but we're not going there) why power? why powerful?
I believe it's human emotions in this case.
We understand the work that went into writing and creating something better than what we had intended. Sometimes that even happens with hubs. Often my best hubs are referred to as powerful, or helpful or whatever.
It is really not me, it's you coming and reading and commenting. I believe the readers see something in my writing that makes them want to read more. I'm not sure of the formula, but for those who have read my hubs, you know when I do, I'll write a bit about my experiences.
So in a more specific example: when I read something beyond a query letter, (j rosewater, still waiting for yours!) I skip passion and look for power. Passion can be fixed, you can fix it, but power is something harder to fix. A master in the writing world can do this. Even one who is just beginning.
A writer can be passionate but it won't be a good book, but a powerful writer can make a bad book look good, or make it better.
So how do you get these in your own writing?
Not easy but with a little work you'll find it. For me it's leaving whatever I've written for a while and then looking at it. Doesn't matter if it's on the computer or if I print it out and read it somewhere else.
I look for the "passion and power" in what I've written. I can say in this case evergreen content, but it's more than that, it's the heart of what i am writing. I cut away anything and everything that doesn't really help the reader.
Where do I do this? I my blogs when I write a blog, I try to get to the heart of the matter, in my freelance work I do this as well, although it takes longer, it does make people happy.
I boil it down to a couple of sentences.
Then I build, I take the emotion that I've written for this book or hub or whatever and try to expand on those sentences. I believe this is the only way to make something more powerful. I begin to ask what is in this that will make a reader come back again and again?
What helps the reader?
Once this is done, then I leave it a bit more and do this over again.
Then I publish it and do another hub, or writer another part to the book or whatever. I believe that this will help other and increase clarity in the writing, which in turn increases the passion and power of the writing.
In the end, it's the power that makes readers come back, but the passion of the writer that make the power in the beginning. If you want to make money or continue to be famous, this is what you need in your writing: Passion and Power.

You did hit all of the main points quite well. Passion and power, pretty simple combination that emotes all of the necessary forces for engaging material. People like to be taken on a journey. Good job, Cheers.

Rebecca - Great post here. I had a guest blogger who spoke very eloquently on this topic. If you don't object, I'd like to share her work?

You have inspired me very much with my writing and I thank you for that. The more I write the more passionate I become with it and thank God for the ability. Thank you Rebecca.

Rebecca Hello sweets. This hub is the best one I have come across that works for me. I am excited Rebecca. I have read many good hubs on writing a book but this info I love. I can relate. Very helpful hub. "I cut away anything and everything that doesn't really help the reader." Great tip and you certainly do because you help the reader tremendously. Thank you Rebecca!!
My dearest Becca...
Another great hub indeed! I feel that everything that you`ve said here summarizes into a key sentence: "it's the power that makes readers come back, but it's the passion of the writer that makes the power in the beginning". An undeniable truth! Wonderful analysis! Loved it!
Two thumbs up!
warm greetings and millions of blessings to you,
Al
