Publishing 101: Writing and Publishing Hubs With Focus
65Publish Those Hubs, But Be Focused.
Writers want to publish long-term, high quality articles on the Internet, and one of these means is by publishing on hubpages. Often the more hubs the better and the more people who read these hubs the better off a writer feels. Of course you want to get traffic from Google, or be seen by Google, but often that is a small problem in comparison to this. You do need to publish your work first however.
You start to write and then you get distracted, perhaps the very thing you want to do is distracting, you know increasing traffic and getting more people commenting and writing that hub that will showcase to the world how great a writer you are. You have after all spent time and energy to write, edit and publish your work.
What most hub writers often forget is that it takes focus and time to write a good hub. There are a lot of great hub writers who write a hub each day or so, but they all have ways of writing when the going is hard. So without any more waste.... here are a few ways to focus on writing and publishing a great hub.
Set a Time: This may seem like a "okay easy" but really other than for work where you have to be there, writing is something we do-- for "fun". Or, ofr extra money. So, if you are writing a blog it is easy to write a post in a few minutes, but it is all the other things which need to be done that make setting a time so vital.
It is a commitment thing, if you want to write, you had better tell people that a time is set. Also tell yourself that between say 6-8 you will be writing. This is a start, but the key to setting a time is to actually do what you have set out to do.
In other words just write what you need to write in the time you give yourself. it is a business so focus on what you have to do in say 15 minutes, and break it down to something small.
-- Add you amazon and links to this new hub. Then add a photo.
--Add text that relates to the photo under the photo.
See simple, just break it down, and all that took was about 15 minutes. By doing something small you gain a bit more focus on where you want your writing to go.
So, I'll work from here on in with this example: Writing and Publishing a hub. How long it takes, and how to focus on writing and publishing it.
Publishign Hubs
Hubs are easy to write and publish, but if you want to do them well... it takes a bit of focus-- it also takes a lot of editing and re-writing before you publish a hub. The focus is on writing a great hub and then publishing that hub so that people will want to read it.
So you begin with a topic, in this case publishing a great hub or an online articles based upon this hub, you need to focus on what is important, the "content" of what people need to have a use for this hub, or will want to click on a link to this hub.
I do tend to look back at another hub and see how long it took me to write this hub. Personally it takes about 2 hours to get a hub completed, but after take time, and hit the "Save unpublished." button
Next i wait two or three days. I leave it alone, and I do not look at it. I leave it be.

This is where focus comes in: editing, or editing as best you can.
I focus on a few things, one the Internet is a big place and that people who will want to read my writing need to be able to find it. This is a business so the next step is re-reading what I have written.
I like to read out loud, and I have found from other hub writers that reading from the bottom up seems to help a lot more. I use spell check, which is great for finding basic spelling mistakes, but I also look for something that is even more important. Oh and by the way even the spell check does not "see" everything. (case in point my favorite misspelled word "the")
The content. I focus on the content, I could write all about publishing a hub, but if my content begins with how to publish a hub then goes on to how the hub can make you money, and then goes to how to edit it, and then finished off with linking...well that is not good content. Besides the better the content the more likely that Google and other search engines will find your writing sooner.
Focus on how the whole hub looks, and reads. Does it follow one line? Is it focused on one topic?
The best way to focus on these questions is to trust your gut, if you are saying "I am confused" or "this does no seem correct." The quickest way to lose a focus is to double think these questions, which means really focus on the good things in a hub, and why you enjoyed writing it.
Publishing a hub really only takes about 5 hours, so anything longer means that you have either too long a hub, or that there is a lot of work to be done on this hub. Looking at the content is easy, but sometimes you simply need to focus on writing another hub to get better.
Publishing a Hubs With Some Focus
See results without votingThe last word: I love the idea of how to focus, but really focus only works when there is passion about something, so on hubpages there needs to be something that you passionate about. Passionate about writing and passionate about showcasing great work and passionate of expanding where people will see your work. ( say Google and the other search engines this is a business after all!)
For me this is writing, and helping others. Yes, making money is great and adding new knowledge is awesome, but the thing that keeps me going is writing a hub that others can truly enjoy and find useful or funny or anything.
Publishing a hub takes focus, but also a willingness to focus on what is good about your writing and what is not so great. No one is a bad writer, everyone has room to improve and to enjoy what they do.
Focus on what you do best and keep going.
To your success.

rebeccae I grateful I stopped in for a visit. This hub is such a help to me. Thank You. I needed to hear this. I mean hear it. Focus. You are an angel rebecca that is why you are so special. I look forward to practicing your tips. Hugs Galore girl. Love ya.
it is a smart thing to be focused on your publishing, but what about self-editing?
I really like all these tips listed. Thanks for imparting all these great knowledge.
Always late am I not Rebecca? You are everywhere on the internet and sometimes it's just hard to keep up with you!
I have not written much lately, but I really have to agree with you on letting it sit. I cannot say that I have the time to put aside 2 hours a day, and I cannot say that everything I have written has been written well. But if you want to be a writer, I have a good friend who continues to say "just do it". You my friend, are doing just that.
Keep it up
I am doing that more and more...writing and then leaving them alone for awhile. Not only does the score rise, but when one goes back in to edit it is often with a different mindset which can help the overall effect of the hub. Great advice!
Thanks Rebecca, a great and helpful hub. I agree with having passion, it is my driving force, but sometimes I can hit the publish button too quickly. Have been holding back, it's so much better. Thanks again, a pleasure as always.
My sweet moonshine, my angel...
What a great hub indeed! Walking the details in every hub about monetizing, improving and hubbing is the best way to get things done! Once more, you have provided useful and reliable information. Rated up, Bookmarked and Stumbled.
Warmest of Hugs and Kisses, lots of Love, Light and infinite heavenly blessings,

Rebecca, Very good suggestions. I think I need to write and then wait a day to publish as when I do that I pick up sentences that can be written better and I pick up little grammatical errors as well. Thanks.
Pat writes: When I have an idea for a hub I usually start by discussing it with Tricia. She might suggest a few things to include that I have not thought about.
I usually write a Hub in about 2 or 3 sessions.
Sometimes I start with photos, as Tricia and I both try to use our own photos for Hubs.
I always look at the Preview for a hub to see if it looks 'balanced'. This often results in adding to some sections of the hub.
I am a real slacker when it comes to keyword research - usually cannot be bothered.
Thanks for a thoughtful hub Rebecca.
VIVA the EDIT BUTTON !
I have to confess that I sometimes (mostly not) write hubs about a topic that I myself find really interesting, which does not have anything to do with my biz "Online Marketing" and which I hope (just hope without any keyword research) will find the way to other interested readers. But I have to get it off my mind by writing it down.
Inspiring as always, Rebecca, thank you.
Thanks for the information
Always the wise advice Rebecca. I don't think I lack the focus but being a one fingered typist hub construction takes me more than a few hours. I also know I lack your patience. I complete a hub...I press publish. I also lack time...it is always elusive.
I learned a lot, Rebecca, and had to ask myself some honest questions, which is always a good outcome of your hubs! Two thumbs up!
Some nice guidelines here. I have begun to revise my thoughts on writing guidelines since I have felt that only those who can't write or have trouble being original write rules and books about how to write. A very wrong assumption on y part since in most cases they can write and have some great ideas. i just hate the idea of confining the creative spark but I have come to realize that many people need that structure. So I think you have hit upon some very good ways for newbies like myself to go about writing and publishing hubs.
Hello Rebecca-I've recently had trouble with the very topic of this hub. A muddled mind and spirit has impeded my writing, so my first step is to regain that 'drive' that brought me to HubPages in the first place!
Thanks so much for the reminder.
I like to mentally form my hub ahead of the time I write it. That way I have time to mulll over my points before I ever begin the writing process. The time I write is much more fluid than some, I expect. I am trying to find a reliable source for pictures, but that is proving to be challenging.
Thanks, Rebecca for your continuing advice to the rest of us!
I admit in my recent hub I published I hit the save unpublish button. With life being hectic and yet still the need to write and get a hub published I was like what would Rebecca do...hmm Hahaha ok well I didnt really but I did remember in your past hubs how you said you used that feature so I tried it out and it worked out well. I wrote the hub and got a picture on there then let it sit came back and did all the other stuff like adding Amazon and spell checking it one more time, adding links ect. I am also thankful for my Gingersoft ware it catches a lot my other spell checker does not. I am spoiled writer. Hahaha
A pearl..., You are so interesting to read. I also like CS Lewis and I noticed the word "teh", so funny, are you left handed by chance? I feel the reason you write such great material is that you are in control and don't look at this as a drugery, but are sincere in your desire to help others. That's why I follow you. Your work is beautiful, yes- but your passion to help 'newbies' is evident also in your work. We may never meet in person, but know this, that I would like to 'shake your hand' and say 'thank you' for your inspiration.
Nice tips. I more or less use the same style. I get a rough draft done in one sitting (very important) and then do the editing later. Keeping the material focused is also essential, but if you know your stuff this isn't normally a problem. Thanks for the post.
Thank you for your interesting points. I do all these. Especially leaving it alone till next day and then going over it again.
I have lately found focus to be a bit more of an issue for me, but I've been carrying on. I will sometimes lose the point of a hub within the details, and find myself deleting a few hundred words to get back to the point. I am hoping it is a temporary affliction, and that my focus isn't gone.
As you suggest, I also find it important to break up tasks. I will never edit a hub on the same day I write them. I may add photos or a poll on the same day I edit, or I might do this on a third day.
Very sound advice, as always.
Mike
We have a lot in common, Rebecca.
I, too, like to write what I think a reader will enjoy reading and sometimes it is useful, sometimes it is funny and when I hit the jackpot, it is useful and funny all at the same time. Here's to more of the same for both of us. Cheers!
