Question About What It Takes: How Does Google AdSense Work? Or How to Get Paid With this Affiliate Program
91Google AdSense Works This Way
How does the Google AdSense affiliate program work?
That is a good question to ask. Do you go and apply and make money right away? Do you build up a business and then write more websites or blogs which have your AdSense code on it? Do you simply dump as much information (content) as you can on your revenue sharing sites as you can? How does it really work in terms of getting paid?
It is all and more of these things. Again the Google AdSense affiliate program is simple, you write unique content and then build up your work from there. Then you begin to add links to other places to increase traffic, which in turn makes you work more "valuable."
The more traffic the more likely you will make money, but with Google AdSense there is more to this than simply getting traffic. It is about Google AdSense, the program, and Google AdWords. They work together and if you understand this concept it will help you make money online with AdSense.
Know the Basics of Google AdSense
Google AdSense works by putting "Ads" on to your website or blog or anything which allows you to put your AdSense publisher id up on these sites. Now, since Hubpages allows you to do this, it becomes far more important, as often if you leave the basics out, then money is hard to come by.
You AdSense ads are based upon three things: Your content, Your keywords and your title. Now, the most important for now is your title. Not so much the URL to your website or blog by the title of your page. Make it specific and make it good.
Next, your first 300 or so words are a big factor in what gets put up by Google AdSense. what it does is it "crawls" through your content and picks out keywords, and then places ads based upon those keywords. Keywords are important, so you will want them somewhere in your text. If you are writing about "making money online with Revenue sharing" you will need to have those words in the text, somewhere.
Which is why you will need to do a bit of thinking about your keywords. There is a reason for this. This reason affects the way your ads are run, and why it might seem strange to get the sort of ads you get.
People Make Money... and Some Spend it On Google AdWords
If you want to understand how Google AdSense works, then you have to look at however briefly to Google AdWords, (it is called the Google AdWords Program) which is the reason for getting the ads you get on your websites. People who make money online often get more traffic by using Google AdWords.
On AdWords they create these ads, and then decide upon some keywords which they "bid" for and then these are placed on Google AdSense, where your readers click on these ads. The person who made these ads, pays Google who in turn pays you a bit of money from what they were paid.
This is why everyone talks about getting and increasing traffic. The more traffic you get the more impressions of ads you get and the more likely you will make money with Google AdSense.
The point is that without AdWords no person would have ads, this is where knowning what sort of keywords you use is important, as the person who picked these keywords for their ads will use the ones your published on your websites or hubs as the main focus. The moral? choose wisely.
But I Don't Use AdWords... Just AdSense, So, I can Make Money.
Except that most people do not. If you are wondering why Google seems so foreign it probably means one of your three basic foundation points are not being met. it also goes beyond that. I have had the pleasure of this discussion with sunforged, and his comment (At least one of them) about making $100 a day with Google is below.
That was mentioned the first time it occurred in the forums and later on an interview on the hubsblog, but that was specific to one holiday trend. In 2009 it was just a weekend, In 2010 I was able to repeat what worked and was more in the 1k for the week ballpark. But thats a trend, it goes away- its way different to maintain good income levels and traffic levels year round.
So the discussion stems around figures that equal $100 usd - someone can make that goal to be daily, weekly, monthly per program etc.
I think If I was to make absolute minimum goals - a benchmark of whether of taking the online writing seriously as a business - I would expect $1 per hub, per program I was involved in (as the average)- if I wasnt hitting that goal, i would have to find out what I was doing wrong- because I would certainly not be getting a proper return on my investment
I agree with his assessment, if you can make $1 a hub, that is great, but I'll add this: If you do not understand how Google AdSense works, then you will understand how to improve your return on investment with this program. Then what you are missing is either content, good titles, or proper keywords.
In fact I will goes as far as to suggest that 90% of your hubs can use a good fix, this is easier said then done, and will require knowing that you need more traffic and better keyword choices. Also smaller details such as a better intro or a title.
I Still Don't Get Google AdSense!
Okay, back to the beginning then. Google AdSense Affiliate Program is the way you can make money with pretty much any website. The reason why some people make money and some do not is because they are careful with their business.
By this, they think of the big picture. Someone likes an ad and they click on this ad, and it takes them to a new website. You get paid from Google. The better your choice of content, and keywords, and title, the more likely the ads will fit closer to your content.
Going into Google AdSense you have a lot of control you don't know of, you can block certain websites ads (using the AdSense Preview Tool) and you can block categories (money, religion, other large topics) which you do not feel are a good fit to your website.
Your choice of keywords makes the ads on your site possible. So for an extreme example if you choise "becoming a monk" as one of your keywords, can you guess what sorts of ads will appear?

Your business depends upon this: Keywords, Traffic, Titles, Content. This does not have to be all in this order, but it must be something that you think about to build your business.
What Google wants is simple: You prove yourself, and improve yourself. All those older hubs or websites that are not looking so hot? Fix them up, add some links to them. Improve the content.
What Google needs to see is traffic to your work on a regular basis and that you are trying to build your body of work. They will help but you have to build your business to the point that they will.
To your success.

Hi Rebbeca,
Thanks for sharing this one. I am now trying to juggle 3 sites (going alright so far.)
I am bookmarking this one and up/useful.
Take care
Eiddwen.
Rebecca, this is a very useful hub. i learned a lot form it.
If it weren't such a pain in the ass to get approved for google adsense maybe a lot more people could make money from it. They gave me the "domain ownership" excuse. It's hubpages, they know we don't own it, but we can alter all of our pages. The instructions they gave me are not possible!
this is a good beginners guide, but can you do something a bit more advanced?
Thanks Rebecca, your hubs are always helping me out. They are really useful to the beginner hubber :).
I work very hard and still i seem to ether not be understanding "ad sense" or im doing something wrong. It say's i have 3000 page impressions, but no estimated pay!
How does that work? Can some please help?
I enjoyed reading this and found it very informative. I still struggle a bit with all of this but think I am slowly getting the hang of some of it!
Will bookmark this Hub for future reference. Thanks.
Love and peace
Tony
Google Adsense works because people want it to work, if they didn't it wouldn't.
Thanks for all the important information. I will try your suggestions, hopefully it will improve my Adsense income. Thanks again, for the advice. Awesome Hub!
good advice. for the fraudulent clicks, well some could use proxies. I woul spread my site across several niches. It is really sad that adsense is a monopoly as you have no real equivalent alternative when someone does bad things to your acct.
Great hub! very interesting indeed!
Rebecca E, You always give good advice for making money with Google AdSense. (and HubPages, and...),I always refer new Hubbers to your Hubs when they start to ask, ...how come you are doing so well, how do you make money?... I am working hard, about 100 hours per week in between temp jobs. I have material for days...just need to live :0)
Your explanations never get old. I enjoy reading your honest opinion about Google and Adsense. You seem to keep Adding Sense to it all. Thank you.
Thanks Rebecca for all the helpful hints. I am still trying to find my way, I am only earning pennies at the moment but I am going to stick with it and hopefully in time I will make a decent income. Again thank you for the help..
Garlic Angel :-)
Enlightening! Thanks.
Sorry to hear about that, socialnetworkcash. I would have been furious.
Sometimes becca, I think new hubbers and bloggers expect too much from Adsense in the beginning. It takes time and patience to start earning dollars. You have to start with pennies and with new original content and many hubs or blogs, your earnings will exponentially increase. Trust me.
Thanks Rebecca, I read your Adsense hubs and it is helping a lot. This hub too is quite helpful. Title tuner too works to make positive changes.
I joined Hubpages for these reasons: I wanted a trouble-free site which provided a clear, easy-to-use template. I wanted to apply Adsense, as I had been using it for some years on a discontinued website. I wanted - absolutely - to retain the copyright on my work. I had hoped to make more money. My site is popular; I have 220 articles on many subjects (I am not interested in a niche). And it gives me something to do most days in researching and writing. It's not hard for an experienced journo., as I am. But I am only getting about £12 ($18) a month from Google. But I am not unhappy with this, based on past experience with Adsense where the purse-strings are tighter than Scrooge's sphincter!
google adsense is one of the best ppc nowadays and a lot of people are earning much from it.
I have had problems with google adsense due to other selfish marketers. I was running a successful adsense campaign about a year ago and was earning between $200 and $600 per day before my account was suspended for suspicious clicks. I never got the $5500.00 that was owed to me and after further research found out a jealous marketer deliberately clicked on my adsense ads over and over again which resulted in my account being banned. It has taken nearly 12 months and still cant get my account back. I know use adsense very carefully with my wifes account. I dont think it is fair that google took my hard work away instead of introducing a system that detects IP addresses and does not allow them to click over and over on adsense ads.
