SEO: Search Engine Optimization The Best Place To Begin on a Hub and Other Websites
66This was wonderful request asked of me by Janny, and she wanted to know where some of the best places to learn about SEO was. Now I had to write a hub about SEO and what it is, but the idea is the same, when you learn about SEO and begin to work with it there is the same feeling: to her it sounded confusing. it is that way with a lot of people in the beginning.
As SEO is all part of the online business, it is something everyone needs to learn. So this hub will be the basics on where to learn about SEO, and what and why you need it. As with all businesses, the more you knowledge you have the better off you will be. Now I will go into detail as well on how you use SEO, and why you use it this way.
There are many online resources, but one resource which is really good is found right here on hubpages. Just type in SEO and you will find some really great hubs.
SEO What it is: Now SEO is three words, and for most people who are in the Internet business they know this: Search Engine Optimization (SEO, which is what I will be calling it form now on.)
The biggest thing about SEO is that it helps search engines find your blog or website or hub or whatever you might have on the web. This is important, as if the search engines such as Google, or MSN or Yahoo can't find you, and find you quickly, you will not be found.
So, what makes SEO so special in this business? the keywords you use, and there are ways to use it well and ways that will take longer for something to happen. You need keywords, and SEO needs them as well. In fact, keywords are the only thing you MUST understand when working with SEO.
Keywords and the Internet: When you are writing a hub or a lens or a blog most of the time, you just write. Often most bloggers (especially new bloggers!) will bemoan the fact that there is no traffic coming to their blogs. For the most part, there is a reason that can be explained easily ( too busy, too new, not enough links, or just plain not readable.) Still there is one thing that is common with writing.
Keywords. For example I have a writing blog, so guess what I focus on? Writing.
I also have a publishing blog, and the focus? Publishing.
I have a blog about Transylvania, and a Book review blog, can you guess what the focus are for them?
So, with SEO you need to focus on what makes the blog or hub special. There are three things which can help you right now: Title, content and Links. But the "link" between them are the keywords you use.
So you are wondering how can I use these keywords to help me in terms of traffic and traffic, and money?
In This Business Keywords are everything: I'll give you another example. Someone once said to me that my hubs were not doing so well in the search engines. The titles were great but...
They lack the keywords in the right area. My hub "I got paid this much? That is not much!" was the original title of my hub. Now it talked about google and the problem a lot of people have with it, the lack of money.
Now, my keywords were okay as well, but needed some work. ( If MyWebs is reading this he'll probably agree.) Still what is the biggest problem? You got it, the keywords on the topic I was writing about were not in the title!
So, I fixed it up: What I did at first was add Google AdSense after I got paid this much, well better but not so good, then I hit upon a really good thing. The Title is now "Google AdSense and making money: I got paid this much from Google AdSense? That is not much!" Guess what happened?
Big traffic from beyond hubpages, and a lot of links. Not just from me and my blogs and hubs and lens, but from other sources. So small change big difference, and really all I changed was the title to add keywords that were in the hub already.
Traffic to a hub comes from many sources, but everything is the same SEO: Now let's look beyond the title to what you have in your writing.
I'm talking about Content inside your hub, it does not help if you write a hub on say writing or publishing, and then never once mention the words "writing" or "publishing" in your hub! Now, I will not suggest you keyword stuff ( which at its finest sense means writing with all keywords you have in your tags on hubpages.) Nor will I suggest duplicate content, were your work is found anywhere, as you can dilute your work.
What I do suggest is to use each hub or lens or blog you create has original content in it. Not only will you attract others but, also you expand your following. Content with good quality will always rise to the top. This is where getting a good keyword or three IN your writing will help you.
For example write a great title, but mention a keyword once or twice in the first say 100 words. You need to think it out and write it out a few times, but the most important thing is quality. So how to make it natural?
Easy plan out your hub ahead of time, and then write it but don't publish it. Next once it's been published, read it again and use Google AdWords to your advantage, I use the keyword tool to look at the suggestion that it provides. If they are close to the keywords I've put as tags I am happy. ( Copy and paste your URL for a keyword tool search-- don't go overboard, but take a look and see )
SEO: Why Should I Care?
See results without votingDon't Over Think when working with SEO: Now, one last word, SEO is a great thing and everyone should at least learn a bit about it, but there is a chance that you will over do it to begin with, trying to learn about everything search engine optimization.
Really, SEO will help you in the long run, but if you consistently publish low quality hubs (anything below a 65 is worth double fixing), and lens and blogs, you will find that people will not look to your hubs. The important thing is links and keywords, and that is a learning process.
As I've said before learning takes time, and time is one thing some people do not want to use. Write and write well, use Google AdWords, and other SEO resources, (SEOmoz is another one.) you will find success.
To your success.

Rebecca - Great hub and resources. Can you make money with adsense posting real estate specific hubs? I post for SEO and have often wondered.
Great hubs, what a fantastic idea!
I figured out SEO a little by now but I need to learn more. Great hub on the topic. To your success too :-) Thumb up!
As always, rich with information!
Thanks Rebecca - every little bit of advice helps, because as you said, it does seem so confusing at this point. But I know that things are like that - all of a sudden they click and fall into place. So hopefully if I stick with it, that will happen.
Hi Rebecca, thanks for your reply, that is exactly what I wanted to know, I really appreciate your help and opinion.
Thank you for this, Rebecca, your hubs are always so informative and helpful. I do have one quick question - with a few of my hubs, after I wrote them I went back and edited them and changed the title so that it no longer matches the URL. The keywords do still match the title, though. Would you consider this a problem? The title is still along the lines of the URL but not the same. I think the titles are better for SEO, though, which is why I changed them. How important would you consider the actual URL? I would much appreciate your opinion, thanks.
Great stuff Rebecca, as usual, you do not disappoint! I am feeling like I'm starting to get the hang of much of this SEO stuff, but everything I read seems to bring more perspective on the topic. Thanks for sharing this.

I been busy so I'm a bit behind on reading hubs.. Of course I agree with you. Keywords in the Title is so very important, THE most important SEO factor according to a SEO expert survey I read and link to. Thanks for the mention. :-)
This explains a lot of what I was wondering about. I really appreciate how easy to understand and well explained your hubs are.
Rebecca, Each time I read your hubs I learn just a little bit more. I have rewritten some hubs but still have much work to do, especially on what I wrote that first couple of months. Thank you!
Horray! I got the basic SEO down! Thanks Rebecca I feel more confident now that I can learn SEO and not think its beyond my reach.

This is a very informative article for those who are still not sure whether they should invest some time in investigating search engine optimization. Here are links to two PDFs published by Google and Microsoft that can be a great starting point for new SEOs (and maybe experienced ones will find something useful too):
I've learned a lot of things about quality writing and SEO from you. Honestly a lot of my results at HubPages derive from your hubs and your advices. And being them positive it means that your advices work. :)
Rated and stumbled, well done Rebecca. :)
Thanks for the great info Rebecca.
Thank you so very much for another good advice which helps.
Thanks for this inforamtive hub, Rebecca! I borrowed a pile of books from the library but they seem a bit overwhelming so it's better for me to start with your easy to follow advice than to consume ALL those books! Great job!
I liked how you mentioned that,"Any hubs below a 65 are worth double fixing." My hubs that are below a 65 are my novels-in-progress that I first wrote when I came onto the scene of HubPages! I gave no regard to SEO at all, as I had no idea what it was! And yes, I will fix them--I promise! Thanks as always for supplying some great SEO advice, Rebecca.
Good Advice! I knew several of the ideas mentioned but learned a couple more. I also like the fact that I did know some of this stuff and an expert is reiterating what I already know. Convinces me I'm on the right track. Thanks very much Rebecca.
Thank you Rebecca!!!! I am honored I got a whole hub about this. Didnt know youd really do that Lol. Thank you so much and I think Im starting to understand it. I also think I have been doing it without even knowing it. like Lets take my ABBA Article " ABBA Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" ABBA was in the title and I also mentioned ABBA through out the article as well as Rock and roll hall of fame. Which were also in my tags as well. So it that kind of like using SEO?
Great hub, Rebecca, with a lot of key information about SEO, keywords, titles, etc.
I will be linking to it in the hub I'm working on now about the philosophy of success for hubbers using AdSense.

Chasing Riley-- SEO is hard for many but after a while you will get the hang of it. It is something you will have to work with anyways, so getting a good grounding helps.
