Why Sometimes Competition (vs Your "Competitor") in Business is Bad And Not Good--- It's a Huge "Businesses" After All
69Competition in Online Business Worlds and Your Competitor
This question is one that again caught my eye, so of course I'll share my thoughts about it. Competition in the online business world is not a bad thing-- in some cases, you need to compete to make money online-- especially if your sources of income happens to be an affiliate program. Yes, this is a business and you need to make money, but we all need to make money. Still this question is one which caught my attention due to the hubpages material in it.
In this case the question was "How do you compete with other hubbers?"
This is the sort of the mentality that will fail in a business and given that I believe we are all here working our own businesses, you need to have some help once and a while. Of course hubpages is a community, and there are some people who will compete... but still. it is not all about money all of the time.
In terms of Google, and Money ( and making money!) and social networking, in terms of you and others, so what is good competition, between you and you and you. So what's the many parts where you can compete with yourself, but also work with other to have writing success?
Hubpages and You: This one is simple, if you compete against others at some point you will become offensive, and people will not come and read your hubs. You will lose your foundation for hubpages traffic. Yes there is always people who will never like you work. Or others who simply won't read your work, so why are you worried about them?
This doesn't mean you shouldn't compete, but do it with yourself, aim for getting a certain number of people to your hubs per day, or write that hub and fix it up again. It is worth it. So, in a sense competing with yourself is a good thing. In fact I do this all the time. Ii set a goal each day of say fixing up a hub or commenting on others hubs or simply reading someone else's hub. That is a good competition to me.
People are very smart, in fact most people are smarter than you think, and they can see right through a competitive person. if they are looking to make money or to get traffic but not help others, people will know, it shows in many different places, in hub activity in comments on their hubs, but most of all: in their actions.
I try to help, and people know for the most part that is my stated goal. To help other, which is why I view competition with myself to be the only competition I can go for. Besides, if I did compete I'd probably make more enemies right?
In the end I will lose out on the community and on other sites, as with social networking site you rely on others to add links there to your hubs.
The Internet and You:I know the Internet is a big place, there are literally millions of people on the web looking for something in any given minute. You need to get at least some of these people on to your site; correct? It's not something you can finance really, you don't have that kind of money, so it's...
Completely correct, but it's a lot easier to do this with help, I'll use Stumble Upon as an example. This is a social networking site. This site will get traffic to your hubs, but won't directly make you money but it does work. Believe me on this one. Really it takes about five seconds of your time to do this. this is finance of time at its finest.
Now you could put all of you websites and hubs and blogs and whatever you have on to Stumble Upon but that might not get your traffic, after all it is just one vote, still let think bigger, get a couple of other hubbers Stumble your hubs or site, and there is instant traffic. They have to go to your site and look to rate it up or down so there you do. It's all about the power of social networking and the Internet.
If you are in competition with other hubbers, and simple go to their hubs to give nasty comments, believe me people will find out, and the result is less traffic. ( I can go and do this by going to your hub activity on your profile. This is a community so use its power-- properly of course and not to your own ends.
One way is to provide some good comments, even ( I know I'll get it, but I'm going with the idea of if you can't say anything nice.... at least make a small "nice" comment) if it's thanks for writing this hub. People will see you read it and will go to your hubs, you never know, you might become their mentor. Also, do make the comment that you Stumbled their hubs, think of it this way the person might not know what you are talking about and there another person to help.
Social Networking needs people, but not people in competition with one another, but working together to promote their hubs... the more people "vote" the more likely other will see it and rate it up, and you'll get traffic. It's a win- win situation that won't take much in terms of finance (time or money) and effort.
The Art of Writing and You: Your hubs are a published written piece and they are an art all of their own. They are your work, and writing them took time and care. what can be more frustrating than to have copied hubs?
No, not you coping them, but someone else, someone who won't give credit to you the writer: as in no link and no I found this on hubpages by "X". That takes away from your business, your traffic and your money... and you can't be everywhere at once!
I'll give you an example: One of my hubs was copied, and our own beloved duchess o'blunt sent me a note asking if I knew about it. Of course I didn't. Still it allowed me to contact the person who copied it, and who, by the way had copied other hubs since that time my business has improved by getting copies of my hubs removed.
Still, if I was competing with duchess o'blunt I don't think she would have mentioned this to me, in fact she might have secretly laughed at this, since it gets traffic to some one else's site, without credit to you, and this stops traffic to your hubs, leaving you wondering what went wrong.
Still want to compete?
There is an art to writing hubs and making money on them, but that doesn't mean competing with others to do this. Just with yourself is okay. The same goes with making money, and how to make money with your business.

Google AdSense, And Your Fine Hubs on the Internet
Google and You: Google is one way you can make money, and that is through AdSense or rather Google AdSense affiliate prgram,, but the big thing about AdSense is that you need traffic and better yet traffic from different sources. the best soruces are of course, the search engines but you need to increase traffic.
Google likes this and so does Google AdSense. The more traffic the better the ads it puts on your hubs. Your traffic from other sources: Stumble Upon, Google, Yahoo, MSN, these are all traffic sources. They have one thing in common. They need different sources of traffic, and an increase in traffic to make money.
They need links between them to survive. I can put links between my hubs, but it works even better if the links are also from others hubs or website or blogs. We all need to work together.
I am not suggesting putting every one's links up on your hubs, but it does make some one's day when they go to your hub and see one of their hubs as a link. I for one am more inclined to comment and or stumble Upon a site sooner if I see one of my links.
Google likes seeing links from other places other than your sites as well. Besides there is only so much you can do with the hubs, and lens, and sites, and blogs you have! Increasing traffic is one thing you can do to a point by yourself but then you need to have some help from others
Making money online and You:This is the thing that makes people want to compete with each other. Money. Some have it and some don't those who don't have it probably take making money more seriously.
I have a theory: the people who make money, don't compete with others but with themselves. When I read the hubpages blog about hubbers who have monetary success, they all say one thing: They have wonderful followers, and a lot of comments, and they might have traffic from all sources or do a lot of keyword research, but the only person that they compete with is themselves. This is the finest way to make money.
Maybe making money is about relationships in this business and it is other who help you along the way. The more traffic you get the more likely you make money, but given Google's terms of service, others can do the one thing you can't do--- click on the ads.
Business and Money and You: I am sure by now you're all going okay, she's lost it... relationships competing with yourself???
What about money? What about the thrill of competition with some one else? What about ME???
Yes what about you? In the process of competition are you making better and more focused hubs? or are you writing less quality to get quantity? This Is a business and as a part of the business you need customers and relationships and of course value.
This where competing is a good thing. I want to make a better hub, I want something that people can enjoy and take something from it. I want more traffic and links (money is nice as well!) but ( and this is a big BUT!) I am only competing with myself, not with anyone else.
Money will come when you take care of your business, and not focus on how to be better than others. To your success.

Say Truth always and Business is not Competition it’s a Challenge
As with the rest of your fans, Love it!
Rated, stumbled, tweeted and facebooked. :)
Another really good hub. You have a lot of insight into this whole process. I definitely agree with you, and I like that you looked at this same idea from so many different angles.Since I've joined hubpages I've found that one of the things I like best about it is feeling that I am part of such a nice and friendly community. I've never done anything like this before so I didn't necessarily know what to expect, but the good feelings and warmth here surprised me.
Great article and very well written you plus some nice info.
Rebecca E, I ran into that question too; and within the context of HubPages, it just struck me that competition on here isn't necessary or desirable. In other business settings, competition is, of course, good and necessary. With something like HubPages, it's pretty much all about each Hubber, his own stuff, and what kind of effort/knowledge of online writing he puts in. Technically, someone could "stretch things out" and say it's about competing for the biggest readership or first Google page, but the individuality and numbers of Hubbers even eliminate a lot of competition on that level. Hubbers can do quite nicely on here without ever seeing fellow-Hubbers in terms of "competition". :)
Absolutely, and your continuous underlying of the community concept in every hub says it all. You are a great contributor in making HP a better place.:)
These days I'm feeling burned out just by trying to read all hubs raised by contest and hubmob and normal hubbing, but I would never miss one of yours. And you know that you're one of my greatest teacher here. As you rightly said our biggest competitor is inside ourselves, so we should care more on what we write than on what others write. Making money here is more a legend than a real fact, at least for 90% of hubbers, so better concentrate on good writing skills which can be applied in other fields. At least we learn some good SEO techniques, and make many good friends. :)
Rated up and of course stumbled.
Excellent, excellent advice and info -- competing with oneself is the greatest challenge of all! Best, Sis
Hey Rebecca, interesting views on competition. I think that is it is really easy for new hubbers to look at some of the more established hubbers and try and be and write just like them, but I think that the energy is better spent trying to be the best version of you that you can be. We are all unique and have something different to offer, so we should try to develop our own talents instead of striving to be a wannabe. This is not saying that there isn't lots to learn from experienced hubbers, but that we need to always stay true to ourselves.
What an interesting hub... I am a new hubber and so feel like I have been on a huge learning curve...but I love it. I agree 100% with your phylosophy of competing. I have tried never to compete in anything I have done, except maybe baseball :-)
Now I need to learn what stumbling is...other than falling over my own feet! I'v heard this phrase a few times and I think it's time I tried it.
Thanks so much for the info...
Blessings to you

Stumbling this one ...even though I do put up my own articles on stumbledUpon. I gulty as charged.
Hey, Rebecca. I remember a hub I read months ago that detailed how this person's hubs were copied dozens of times and that when she went to ask cordially for the person to delete their copied hub, the person responded back with broken English and tried to sweet talk her out of NOT getting angry. She voiced to us (the readers) that having your hubs copied was a "Backhanded compliment" at its fullest and I agree.
I do believe that none of us can be successes at HubPages without a following. It takes work, time, and faith to become a success. I hope others will take note, Rebecca. Thanks as always for a great hub and for pointing out the keys to our success.

Thanks so much for sharing your fountain of knowledge. I've started making a little money following your advice. Again I thank you so much.
I'll add this: it depends on how well you compete against yourself, because some people will say that they only compete with themselves, but they are really competing with someone else... still you never struck me as someone who would do that!
Hi Rebecca, you have great advice for us here. Thanks.
Thanks for the excellemt thought-provoking hub, Rebecca. Your hubs usually are.
Whenever I start to think about competition in writing Hubs, I remind myself that mine may be better than some but at the same time, some are better than mine.
Rebecca, Another great hub. Thanks
I am sorry. Rebecca, but there is nothing I can add to what hasn't said before. I have tried hard to think of something I could add but no way. Thank you for your impressive hub.
Rebecca, after everyone else, all I can say is way to go, Fantastic hub. Blessing to you. creativeone59
Can't say it often enough--you are so helpful, and you put things in a way that is easily understood. I am about as tech savvy as Regis Philbin, and I often need things spelled out for me. Thanks for consistently being a good helper and neighbor within this community.
Rebecca, I would have to agree with the others. I always see your Hubs as a way to learn more. I actually never saw the point nor reason to compete with others. If you were to meander on to my Profile, you would see links to others profiles and certain articles.
I enjoy bouncing around and commenting here and there, but the real joy is what's in the Hub. I could learn something new and that to me is an intangible asset.
Thank you for the continued assistance. I've got a few blogs out there connected with the Veterans Housing Program and one for Unchained Grace Ministries. I've monetized them for AdSense and a few Amazon widgets here and there. I just did this, so I haven't really expected much in the way of results yet.
Rebecca, it was you who turned me onto Stumble Upon and so I Stumble my way through the Hubs of others. I guess I should tell them, but I just do it to help them. Same as I'd hope they'd do for me one day.
By the way, because of your position in Rubber Chicken, Unlimited, you would know we have no competition. KFC wants a renegotiation and the marketing people from Popeyes says we need to rethink our position with KFC.
Compete for what? As I see it, we help eachother get traffic. Is that competing? Only if we resent anyone being successful. I simply cannot see how we compete - maybe someone clicks on someone else's recipe instead of mine? Am I to resent everyone who writes blogs, has a web site, writes hubs? What nonsense!
My dearest Becca...
This is another interesting analysis on writing and money making. I think competition is inevitable because it is a biz. However, there is healthy competition and unhealthy competition! Particularly myself, I share, I rejoice with others´ achievements. I do not compete! And I do not see you as a competitor, you are my friend! It is something to ponder over; nonetheless, especially if one feels not so sure where one stands regarding the biz itself!
Rated and Stumbled!
warmest regards and blessings,
Al
Hey Rebecca....glad you peruse the question section and find such interesting points of view. Enjoyed the hub; good job!
I agreed with you that you alweays wanted to help others. Competition is always expected in the business, like in writing. Yet, we can still learn from each other in HP, right? Thanks for this hub, Rebecca E.
Thanks for this hub, Rebecca. For me I compete mostly against my self of one month ago or two months ago to see ways in which I may have improved.
Rebecca:I agree with my Anjali, your hubs is one I always click on because your topics are useful and always well written.
I never thought about competition, guess because I am not competive by nature, and I see Hubpages as a place of connecting with diversity and with some very talented writers, but you made excellent observations. Pam Grundy who now writes elsewhere, helped me improve my writing skills just by reading her work.
As usual a thumbs up!
Hi Rebecca! I see your name pop up in my e-mail notification and I immediately click on your hub link just because I know for sure that its going to be something useful. Your hubs have become a resource on HP. You should be proud of your work. Every time I read your hub thinking that its all I'm already doing and then....right somewhere in the most inconspicuous part of the hub will lie subdued some brilliant piece of advice which, if followed, can work wonders for any blogger. Thanks for making HP a powerful tool for accessing valuable info on blogging / hubbing. :)
Very helpful. Thanks Rebecca!
