Ten Simple Ways to Increase Traffic To Older Websites and Make Money
77Hub Love and Increasing Traffic
If you Want to make money online you will need to increase traffic to new and older websites and articles of yours. On the Internet, your traffic is your way to either gain more exposure or make money through affiliate programs such as Google AdSense. Getting traffic is simple it is the increasing traffic is a bit more of an important issue. Getting traffic is the only way you will make money
When you publish a fine hub with great content and a well research keyword system, then you simply increase traffic to your new hub due to your followers... in other words, you build hubs to get some sort of readership. The older hubs are the ones you will need to focus on. Some hubs seem to get traffic and continue to get traffic and other hubs need some hub love not only to increase traffic but to make money.
The reasons can range from lack of simple keyword research and search engine optimization to the fact that you have simple not used anything like a keyword research tool (Google AdWords being one of them)
In this, your business depends on you and the effort you put in. There are many ways to make money online, but NONE of them (particularly Google AdSense) will work if you do not get traffic.
Older Hubs... Increase Traffic With This
These two steps are possibly the most vital in increasing traffic to your hubs, your websites and your blogs. Now, this will take a lot of effort particularly if your hubs or website is older.
1) Go to e-zine articles: Pick five of your hubs which have the least bit of traffic. Now, for each hubs write 5 articles this will mean 25 articles total. Make them about 400 words per article. Original content for e-zine articles is best. Go back to your hubs and make certain that they have at least 800 words or more. Also make sure that the hubs is not copied. Do not simply use one means but also plan to go to copyscape and see if anything is copied from your hubs.
Then if your hub is not up to a good standard ( say over 800 words or more, or doesn't have photos) then you will need to add more to it: photos, polls, quizzes, all to make your readers do something on your hub. Always edit your hub to update it.
2) Other online articles sites: To make money you need links, and the more links you have the better... except when all your links are from one or two places. of that is the case, you have a problem. It does not matter about follow or no follow, but how many different places you have your links pointing from. Again look for online article writing sites. They, for the most part, are a slow method, but do get traffic and make you money.
Making money online is a process and it is one where the "rules" are changing. The more important thing is that quality, original content is the most important. A short, poorly written article can now do you more harm than good. Editing, and re-editing a published hub is a must.

Cute But Making Money Is Important.
Yes making money in this business is important, but if you do not have traffic it does not matter how great you think your work is, you will not make money. So to make money online, you need to think of traffic but also of of Google AdSense and how it relates to your websites.
3) Maximize Your Google AdSense: Look at many hubs of people who have success on hubpages, and what do you see? Google AdSense. Now, I have found the better the content the more traffic, but also, the ads tend to be more what you want them to be. But there is something else many many people miss. That big box of Google Ads to the right of your first bit of text? 250 words or so and then a photo seems to be best to get that rectangle up.
4) Knowing what the ads mean: For example your are writing about water, or about history, and up comes a ads on how to publish... well, what Google AdSense does is look at three things: Your first bit of content, and then to your keywords, and then to the main "search-able words" in your text. Again to make money, look at your title, and your text and then keywords (or tags) you've chosen to correct any Google AdSense inconsistencies. This should improve when your traffic clicks on ads; and when you increase traffic to your hubs.

Traffic. Then Money. Then Do It Again
This is a simple fact and these three tips will help you improve traffic and make money online.
5) Write on a regular basis. No really, write on a regular basis, if you are new to anywhere the fastest way to get Noticed is to write and publish your work. Two points about writing on a regular basis: Write something that you love to do to begin with, and also always enjoy the process.
6) Write elsewhere: Part of what makes you money is the art of writing on different places. Some people write on hubpages, but they also write on sites such as Squidoo or wikinut, or blogs or bukisa, or triond, or hundreds of other sites. Decide where you get your traffic and add links to where you want traffic to go.
7) Plan on money: This counter-intuitive, but make a plan on money. In other words, if you are not seeing something moving, go back and find out why. If you do not understand, ask, but the most important point is that in this business you need to make money. If you are not, find out and fix it. Fixing your business and accepting that you have to do this is the most hardest thing you will do.

Traffic is Not Traffic... But You Need to Increase Traffic
Traffic is something hard to define, but as a general rule when you focus on increasing traffic two things will happen you will increase traffic and still find no money, or you will increase traffic and make money.
8) Traffic from search engines is best: Go to Google or Yahoo or Bing (the MSN search engine) and see what websites come up. Chances are there is an opening for your hub to get search engine traffic but you need to have these search terms in your hub. in other words, this is basic SEO.
Publishing a fine hub will often be the difference between a good money making hub and a bad one. The more photos and other things you add are also important, but do not use personal photos as this can lead to confusion- you are not allowed watermarks on hubpages photos.
9) Traffic is traffic and if your focus is on increasing traffic...: You will increase traffic but you might not make money. Making Money and increasing traffic at the same time is a totally different goal than simply increasing traffic.
10) Know thy business: This is an online business. This is your business. This is your business. You are the only one who can fix your hubs to create more traffic to them.
Remember traffic does come, and increasing it is easy, but the harder part is thinking like a business and setting goals.
To your success.

Thanks for sharing this! I voted this up and useful. My favorite part was about going to search engines to research key words to help my hubs generate more traffic. I hadn't thought of this before.
Hi Rebecca E.,
This is an awesome hub. Bringing traffic to my older hubs will be easier for me now. Thanks for the information.
:)
Great hub - informative and helpful. I need to read this 20 more times :) You are a wizard and so kind to share your knowledge. Thanks so much!
I agree with you that making money online is not an easy lifestyle. Yes, making money online is a lifestyle. We choose our destiny and we have chosen to work at home unlike majority of people who still work the regular 8-5/9-6 office job everyday but nothing happens to their life.
Monthly salary is not even enough for their families especially here in the Philippines. Majority earns less than 200 dollars a month. You can just imagine how hard life is in this side of the planet.
However, I, just like you, have tasted success in online marketing. I have also experienced working as article writer, internet and news researcher, data entry worker, virtual assistant, social bookmarker etc.
Making money online entails discipline and a lot of hard work. When starting, you need to have patience and do better to have an increase in your monthly salary. Online workers need the ability to multi-task in order to succeed in this way of life.
Thanks for your wonderful advice once again. Just wanted to let you know I made $157.00 year end with Google in 2010. This from following your suggestions and "Google Adsense for Dummies". It may not seem like much to some, but it's a huge amount for me. Thank you so much!!!
Great hub, very informative:D I think for me to start I need to publish more hubs D:
Great hub on generating traffic. I have to look at writing on different websites to increase my traffic.
This article was spot on. Rome was definitely not built in a day in the internet traffic world. Nice Hub
Thank you, again ~ I shall try to work on this
Great information, very helpful.
Hi Rebecca,
seems like you're getting a lot of traffic on this Hub! Good article. I like how clear you made writing and posting on e-zine articles.com. I need to do that and I know it. My traffic is picking up but on any given day I know I have probably 70% of my Hubs that get little to zero traffic. So my traffic probably comes from 30% or fewer really. Hubs I wrote this year are consistent. So my writing has improved with using titles, etc.
Also, MikeNV has a good comment.
I also suggest posting the Hub url to web sites or blogs were you become a regular visitor. Make a commitment for a few months to post once or twice per month.
I'll rate this up.

Nice:) this is just what I need as a new hubber. Thanks Rebecca..
Thanks for the tips Rebecaa - I've got to say I prefer goarticles to ezine though
Here is a very simple tip that is often overlooked (But not by HubPages as they are testing a tool that will help you with this).
Look at your old Articles. If they are NOT getting traffic you should pay very close attention to REWRITING the Titles so they are more descriptive and contain targeted keyword phrases. The Title tag is the most important tag for Search Engines. With a bad title your articles will not be found.
Now that you have rewritten your title tag use the Control +F command on your PC Keyboard to search for the Keyword Phrases in your article that MATCH the new keyword phrases you have added to your rewritten titles.
If they do not appear then ADD THEM to the article. I'd recommend an exact match keyword phrase appear in the first 20 words of the Article. Then again at least one more time in the first 250 words.
Then try and work it or a similar phrase into text that extends beyond that amount.
Keep this simple FACT in mind as you are doing this. Most people will never read your article... that's right of the people that do find your Article more than 90% still will NOT read it. So if your grammer is not perfect it doesn't matter. Just get those keyword phrases in there so people will find you and see the right ads.
Very interesting and informative!
Well thought out article. Older website's sometime force you to "think outside the box". Seems like you are doing that! :)
We all always enjoy such profitable reads.thz
This is very useful for me! specially I'm new to Hubpages. I want to learn more regarding how this business works. Thank you for the thought.
Very helpful hub. Thank you for such great information on backlinking.
Well written! Well done!
good stuff. I love tips on increasing traffic. I wasn't a good writer until as you mentioned you do more of it. Actually, I still am not where I want to be as a writer.
I was reading something recently that advised if you are writing articles for article directories, you don't have to write them about your topic area, just so long as you use good keywords in the author bio. What do you think? So many say that the articles have to be on your topic, but with small niche topics that don't get much traffic, your articles won't get much either, so if you write on dating or weightloss then at least you stand a chance - any thoughts on this? It sounded fair to me.
That was helpful :) Thank you!
Great hub as always Rebecca, but I have a question. I THINK I read in a hybpages email recently that hubpages does NOT reccomend ezine article sites for creating links to your hubs. I think the implication may even have been that it is classed as "over promotional" and could be seen as a violation of hubpages terms and conditions. Of course I can't find the email now and can't find anywhere on the site that this is mentioned. Can anybody clarify what the official hubpages position on this is?
Great help. Thank you.
Always good at jogging my memory. Thanks Rebecca. Oh and Happy New Year.
Absolutely great information.. thanks for sharing.
As usual, you are absolutely right.
Thanks, I needed this article. I will approach my writing more as a business than a hobby.
Another very useful hub. I need to implement some of your ideas though instead of just doing my head nodding when I read the advice!
Very Useful. Thanks for sharing.
I always appreciate your good advice and this hub is no exception. I have deleted a couple of older hubs where the information simply became obsolete but I have a few other that I will work on. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and ways to improve our Business. I will look into EZine articles.
Thanks for so much information. Giving older hubs a facelift is so important, and you always find a new keyword to put in.
Some interesting ideas here, Rebecca. Thanks.
Thanks for reminding us, Becca, that our hubs can be much like children. If we don't continually pay attention to them, they will not thrive.
I love this and will check it out. It's nice to learn from you.
As always I learn something when I read one of your articles here on HubPages, voted up and useful too.
Excellent advice. backlinks are critical everywhere for online success. Wonderful information. thank you
Rebecca - I like the idea of writing articles that link to your Hubs. I wrote a similar articles called How to get visitors to read old blog posts and Hubs http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Get-Visitors-to-Rea but of course our information is different. I enjoyed your pointers.
up and beautiful! Well written and informative. Very good info on retracing your steps. Thanks again Becca...
