What Are Your Ten "Steps" To A Better, More Profitable, Money Making Site/Business... Or Make and Building called "Work"
69Ten Steps to Money... and Profit.
As a business person you have a few critical choices to make, and one of them is to build your online body of work to the point where you will make passive income, and whatever your expenses, you will make a profit with your work. As the Internet changes and the rules change, so does your business choices. This is why a lot of people love "making money" sites but do not understand what it means to profit in your business.
This goes beyond Internet marketing and goes into the idea of how you run your business. You have to be honest with yourself and you have to take steps to make your time, and your online work more valuable.
You have to sit down and look at your hubs and take them apart, and rebuild them to the point where you will get the three needed ingredients to make money online: Content, Traffic, and Keywords.
Below are a list of ten things that will make your hubpages experience, and your online business more money and more passive income.
Content and Traffic: The Foundation Steps
Content:This is the most critical step, and I am not referring to keywords, or how to build a hub, but what you write. It needs to sound natural. It also is not a way to get referrals to other sites. You have to think three questions (the answers are all yes) if you want your content to be of value. Is this content something I would actually seek out and read? Does it help others? Can I leave it alone for a year with it still getting some traffic due to the nature of the content?
The honest yes is when you know that your content is both useful and valuable.
Traffic: This is where a bit of research comes in. (AKA work) you need to look at your hubs and see what helps you and what seems to get a little traffic. All hubs have ebbs and flows so what you want to look at is the 30 days of traffic from an older hubs to see where you can improve. Now, a quick view of writing, and traffic, content which is "boring" or something that does not help other will not get traffic over time, but content that is useful and funny and zany will. It all boils down to title, and then content. if you've had a hub here for say 6 months and there is traffic to it, leave it be. On the other hand, if you've had a hub here for 2 years and you get zero traffic over 30 days, go and fix this hub.
The idea with traffic is that you want to see an increase over time on your work. This increase in traffic needs to come from as many different sources as you can get, the more sources the better. Start with hubpages traffic and then expand to others: such as your search engines and social networking sites.

Okay, Fine Got those Two... BUT WHAT ABOUT MONEY????
Fine, you want to know about Money? This isn't a hub about making money, unless you've got the foundation for the money. This means building on two more steps, and these are probably the two that are the hardest and take the longest.
Keywords:This is known as tags on hubpages but the idea is the same, the more quality keywords you have the more likely your hub or site will be found. Now, keywords are a thing that are based upon your content, so if your tags or keywords do not seem to work with your content then you have a problem.
There is a fine line with keywords, too many keywords such as 'making money online fast" too many times and and your site will be viewed badly by Google, the reverse is true, to general a tag or having the tag used only once in a site and no matter how much potential to make you money it is, the less chance you will have of getting found. Use the keyword tools to find and learn about keywords, and what works for your hubs.
Search Engines and Your Site:In essence, to make a profit, your site needs to be found on the search engines ( Google, Yahoo, MSN). It does not matter if you can be found by a million people on the social networking sites, or on hubpages or through links. (these are all great for increasing traffic, you still need them!) If your keyword choices and content do not get traffic from search engines you have a problem. You need to start by the slow method, which is pick a search engine, go to it, and start to type in "searches" see what comes up and take note. then you should go on to Google AdWords to do some keyword research to improve your business.

Social Networking and Linking
Social Networking Sites:This is a great step for beginners to have to their sites, and hubs. For one thing it is more of a popular thing to do and really takes about 5 minutes to get set up on a social networking site. One piece of advice, spamming the social networking sites is bad, if you only add your work and no one else's, you will look like a spammer and, on some sites, this can get you banned, so work and get a few of your work there, and then build from there. For this to work, you need to have followers. The more followers the more chance to get traffic to your work.
Links: A link is a link, and although you need several links to get some sort of decent search engine traffic it is also vital that you add some links (carefully and over time) to your other sites, such as a blog post or a website. Links are the "streets" your traffic uses to get to your site. You need them, but you do not need overly promotional linking. A link is anything that directs your visitors to some other page or website. Links means increased traffic, which means over time more business, which means more money. Linking is a slow method but it is very much a foundation to your income and profit for your business.
But But But A Profit? I Just want Money.
The next two steps are vital to making your business succeed, these are sort of the next step beyond the last few. This goes beyond getting paid by Google and into the realm of your profitable business.
Knowing what works:Some Websites are all about how to do this, or how to do that. This is great, and works well for them. Each business needs to operate within a certain niche. For example I have found success on hubpages with making money hubs, whereas, on Squidoo, I am more successful with my shopping lenses. Know what works for each part of your business. Know how much time and energy you are putting into your business, and average it out. So if you work 600 hours a month, and make $50 with no other income... well that is not profit, but you are still making money.
Know Your Stats:This where using Google Analytics and other stats helps improve your profit and your income. Learn how each works, Google AdSense allows you to track your stats and this is where you can find out what hubs make you money, and which hubs get traffic, but lead to making more money. Your stats are important and it takes a good 500 hours of working with your information from stats to improve and ultimately see results on your sites.
Editing, and a Money Plan
Going back and Fixing up: While this won't get you much in terms of followers, the thing about editing your hubs is that it is a easy way to improve on them, often you will find that it does help by doing the following: Look at your tags, and then go on a search of hubpages to see what comes up. One word tags simply are not good enough to get long-term traffic you need two or three word tags as well. Look at your hubs, large text, no photos, no polls? Break up the text and add something more to you work.
A Plan, A Realistic Money Plan: We all want to make money online and grow our business, but often there is NO plan on how to get there in a reasonable time-frame. Worst still without a plan you will have unrealistic expectations of what you can and can not do with your time, and your money. Yes you can go and use Google AdWords, spend most of your income, to get no profit, or you can learn to build your business, slowly, with a lot of research and editing. Making Money is not easy, but you need to make a plan that is about 3 to 5 years, also a weekly and a monthly business plan to see continued success.

The last word, or minding your business: Now I am in no way suggesting you forget others while working and being on hubpages, part of what makes hubpages so great is that it is found by Google and other search engines and it is also a means to be a part of the community that is hubpages.
This being said, if you are serious about making money, and building your business, the community part of hubpages comes after you have written a good hub or have learned what you need to do to make a profit and helping your business grow.
To your success.

well done and informative, but this is not only a business, but a life.
three or four words tags do not help if your content is poor, so love the title, work....
I think traffic is a problem now due to google places.
Thanks, Becca, for reminding me of the importance of tags. Especially two- and three-keyword tags. I plan on reviewing my hubs to make sure my tags are relevant and keyword rich.
Great information! Being a new hubber this is really helpful to me. Thank you!
Great Information, I do agree your information must be useful for people to take interest and also generate income. People helping people is always great for being successful online or any brick and mortar business. I will keep reading your articles because your articles provide some very useful information; therefore, keep up the great work.
I try very, very hard but I don't think I'll ever get there.
Good guide, I am your fan. Thanks.
A lot of great information here, I better get after my tags and get them in order.
This piece is probably the most useful I've seen on the never-ending subject.
Of all the wonderful hubs you have written on succeeding online, this is one of the most important. It is absolutely necessary to see how all the pieces fit together, and you have demonstrated that here in a wonderful manner. Some aspects of an online business will require more attention than others, but nothing can be completely ignored. This hub should be bookmarked by anyone wanting to succeed. Thanks so much, we continue to learn from the knowledge you graciously share.

I just don't like the fact hubpages uses the no follow in a wrong way. It was supposed to be for spam mail not to punish writers. Good hub though.
Well written article with useful info. I can never be a commercial animal though, to my detriment I am sure. I just like researching and writing small articles about subjects that interest me and, I hope and trust, others. If I make a few sheckels, good, but I don't worry about that aspect...maybe because I don't really need the extra money. Bob
Yes, this is great advice.
I have used a few of these and while I know time and more learning is required; it is heartening to know all the work does produce results, but it isn't a fast road to riches, rather a slow long learning curve that requires lots of patience and effort!
Very good point Rebecca E , to go back and edit past hubs. Great tips for everyone.
I am sure this is because of your good writing - it is amazing how closely related all the adsense ads are to your topic. My hubs don't always get that kind of lineup.
Thanks for the user friendly explanation of what is necessary.
Thanks Rebecca for this sincere and awe inspiring piece of work. I always feel quite ecstatic each time I read your hubs, and this is truly no exception. Thanks as it goes to explain that there's no magic to making money online, but the only way to get it done is getting your acts right and setting your priorities right too. Thanks it was lovely reading this.
yet to get an adsense but I understand what you are saying. In last few weeks I have read and learnt a lot about making money online. A lot of your hubs were in the reading list. I have started applying those and I am getting good result instantly. This one is another great overview that has brought things together. thanks for the hub.
Great info!
