The Business of Making Money On The Internet and How to Fix Your Online World

The rule of 80/20 and Building and Internet Business

This online world is very much like the real world, we all want to make money and, we all want to be able to promote our work to the bigger wider world. There is one important fact that most people need to understand. This is a rule that we all talk about and that few of us understand. The rule of 80/20.

This rule means that the website owners who knows which of their content on which particular website gets them traffic, money and comments, and then can build upon them to continue this tend has the most chance to make it in this business. This is when you focus on what makes your business grow and are also willing to fix the mistakes of the past.

There are ways that by using a bit of content, of Google and, of SEO that your business can build to the point that you money becomes passive income and you will need to work less. But that boils down to knowing what and who makes you money.

Google AdSense

Google AdSense Affiliate Program: In fact this is the business that everyone talks about and thinks that if they do the right things that they will make money with Google. Yes, you need to use Google AdSense and Google Analytics, in fact using Google Analytics is a must, but at the same time, Google itself has a rough 80/20 rule when dealing with money.

Where is this found?

In the payouts per month, only twenty-five percent of Google AdSense publishers make the required payout level each month. So, in fact this is the business world coming to light. So, this is why it is useful to know what gets you both traffic and money and by default then, knowing which ones you need to promote.

So how do you build your business to make that twenty-five percent and make money from Google AdSense? Look at your Top twenty percent and start to build around these.

The best twenty can be anything, but for the most part look for the ones which have the most search engine traffic, the most comments, the most user interest and fix them up. In many ways content is the most important thing to think about, but even then some content will do better than other content.

Next, look at your keywords and your links. If you are focused on one or two keywords, or only have a few links to a few sites, you will have a long-term problem. Do not spam links, as in the end only quality links will "win" approval from search engines in general.

Links are considered one of two things organic or not. A quick review, you want people to add links for you, in other words you want organic links, but you also need to give these readers a reason for adding these links to the Internet, and to their network of readers.

Amazon and eBay: Although I have seen number which vary widely, I have seen that to get a payout with amazon or eBay, there is a rough outline of who and what makes the sales. As a outline, about 20 to 30 percent of amazon associate and eBay sellers make the required money each month to get a payout.

Yes, traffic from the search engines is essential, but so are the products you spend time deciding to place. I would also suspect that about 20% of your chosen products make the money you make each month.

Again the Internet is a business, and the more focused you are the better the chance of making money with Amazon or eBay or AdSense. Knowing about Your Stats and your products is a must, but also knowing a bit of linking and getting traffic to several hubs and linking them well so that people will find them and more.

This is the only way to get people to buy products and buy them from you.  You need basic knowledge of what sells and what doesn't.  It is all about knowing the best choices and what works to make you money. ( In this case product placement.-- teh 80/20 at its finest-- twenty percent of your products will sell  and make up 80% of your income if you place them correctly)

Yes cash can pour into your hands, but you will have to commit to something
Yes cash can pour into your hands, but you will have to commit to something
That something is publishing
That something is publishing

The Rule of 20% and The Fine Hubs You Publish

So, that great but why should I care about this? I just want to know how much money you can make and how true that number is. Then you are on the wrong track. It is like comparing apples andoranges. You are comparing your hubs to someone else's hub.

I know what makes me money, and between my blogs and hubpages, and Squidoo and Bukisa, and wikinut (all the sites you can find me at by the way) I make about $300 or more a month from Amazon, and Google AdSense, and that is on top of writing for others. Of course this was before the Google Panda update fo 2011, from there I have learned I need to increase traffic a lot more.

Again, if you do not add in the fact that I have been writing on the Internet for more than 2 years (which really is not much.) then you are comparing the wrong person. The only person in this Internet business you should compare yourself to is YOU. You are you Internet business. You need to look at your work and figure out what you need to do to make money in this business. See, I have spent a lot of time learning about social networking, and SEO and proper promotion, and most importantly what to promote. Content is king, but knowing which content makes you money... is well beyond value.

So yes, you can make money, but the question is how much are you willing to work for this money to find out that golden 20 percent?

After all you can go and write on the forums and try to get people to come and read your work, but again if you don't have any useful published for them, they will not come back, or worst still complain that your writing is lacking. There is a very large issue of what is considered a fine hub these days, and this has a factor in your deciding what is your top 20%.

I think the eighty Twenty Rule is...

  • Cute, but not really something I care about
  • If it means more work for me... I don't want to know
  • Funny: Twenty Percent of My Work makes me 80 percent of my Money???
  • A Possiblity
  • Truly Enlightening
  • I'm off to Check my Stats and Put it Into My work
See results without voting

This is about focus, and money and your business and your traffic... the last word.  The more focus you put into learning how you make money on the Internet (no cheating here!  you will lose in the end) the more success in terms of money you will see.

Again plan long term, this is not, nor will it ever be a get rich quick idea, and earning money is a part of the whole process of building your business to the point that the passive income allows you to focus on other parts, building upon that strong foundation.

So, look at your hubs, and look which ones are doing great and then use Google Analytics to go farther, and you will see money coming, and that is where you will know how much you can earn.

To your success.

Excellent advice and I'm so glad that you pointed out:

The only person in this Internet business you should compare yourself to is YOU. You are you Internet business. You need to look at your work and figure out what you need to do to make money in this business.

I learned early on that I may not have the same results as others on this site claim to have. i need to focus on my projects and how to improve.

Excellent hub (as usual), voted up, marked useful, bookmarked and shared.

Amie-- yes it does, and about three years is a good average, and I'd add three years to make money on a well linked and often posted blog.

Amie Warren 20 months ago

Yes, it takes a good while to get established online. I have heard three years bantied around as the time when a well-written, well-worked blog starts to make serious money. That sounds reasonable to me.

Cemil-- I have deleted one, and that one was a very big mess, however that being said, I thinkt here is value to all your hubs, which does mean that one day you might find one is suddenly doing well, and then goes back to sleep so there is great value in keeping them there.

Everyone should pay attention to the 80/20 rule--it is applicable in any retail store you walk into, so why shouldn't it apply to online writing, also? It is also important to remember that the 80% that doesn't generate the majority of your revenue is not unimportant. I worked in a retail store that sold sweatshirts, and there was a hideous orange sweatshirt on the racks that never sold. When we removed it, sales of a sweatshirt that did sell well went down. We realized that ugly orange shirt was a bright color that attracted people to that area of the store, and it contributed to sales even if we didn't sell it directly.

In online content and everything else, you will build on your 20% that generates most of your revenue, but realize the other 80% has meaning, also.

Thanks for another great hub.

Years ago, a company I worked for had a workshop on the 80/20 rule and it was intriguing. It applies to so many aspects of life...glad you reminded me of it... Going back to my Hubs to refocus on what works! Great Hub. Thanks!

You nailed it again: "The only person in this Internet business you should compare yourself to is YOU"

I can't say how much I agree with you on this one. I have seen plenty of people ask how much can I earn through adsense, is this an ok amount, how did you do it? I can give advice, you can give advice, but in the end, what works for me and you doesn't mean it will work for others!

That's great Rebecca - 5,000 page impressions are pretty impressive :)

Have you ever come to the point of having to unpublish a Hub?

Even though I have very few Hubs, I find that after the first few days, traffic stops and the hub-score and everything else just drops. It's kind-of dis-heartening but I guess it's all part of the learning process.

lorlie6-- this means don't touch them, they work well. Try going to look at them and see where your others can be :built" upont eh same lines. So don't mess with someting going well.

Rebecca E. profile image

Rebecca E. Hub Author 20 months ago

eventsyoudesign-- your content simply needs to follow the terms of service from google, which means nothing that they say you can not have on your site. As for videos and picture it does help, but mostly for the value of people being there longer, and finding it useful, and the longer they are on yoru site, the more of a chance to click on and ad or buy a recommended book.

Two of my hubs have had consistent traffic over the past year, Rebecca, and I think I ought to go back over them an 'tighten' them up some more. On the other hand, I'm not sure I want to 'mess' with them too much!

Great stuff, as usual!

samsons1-- you have talent and you will see success, so I have no doubt that you will keep on plugging until the success finds you!

Rebecca E. Hub Author 20 months ago

Cemil-- if we know our strenghts and our weaknesses that is prefect, and I do not ever mean that you forget about your hubs that aren't doing as well, but if you have to decide what to promote then promote trhe ones doing well. With my traffic, there are three hubs which have either close to 5,000 or over five thousand page impressions, and over 20 which have over 1,000 page impressions... so I try to focus on these.

I read your article. Now I need to process it. I have to go back over it again. I want to make money, but I am still trying to understand AdSense and how it pays me. Do I need pictures and videos on my pages to attract more readers or advertisers? Also, can I still use my content in any way I see fit? I will read your article again, but this time I will copy it so I can highlight details so I can better understand how it all works. Thanks for any help.

'Useful' Hub Rebecca. It's important for everyone to know where our own strengths are and how to exploit them.

On the other hand, we also need to identify our weaknesses and educate ourselves to be better in those areas.
