Using the Hubpages Ad Program: The Pros and Cons
84HubPages Ad Program
By now most people have heard about the new program which Hubpages has rolled out for its users: The Hubpages Ads Program. This is for the most part a good program, and one where it is pretty simple to make a bit of money a day, of course you will need to get some sort of traffic.
With the Ads program you will need to think more about people coming and seeing your hubs as opposed to what you would do with a Google AdSense ad. (With the contextual ads, people need to be legitimately interested in the ad to click on it)
In other words, you need to know a few things to make some earnings with this program. They are just as important as the Google AdSense affiliate program, and they make a difference if you follow them.
Social Networking Sites, and Impressions
If you are serious about making money with the hubpages Ad program here is my one bit of advice, make certain you put your work on to the social networking sites, and then make certain that you share it with your followers.
For example on StumbleUpon: You have followers, and you can choose to share you work with people, in this case you need to share it, as the people will then go and find your work on their emails and "like it." This leads to impressions which leads to money.
The ideas is to get traffic from the easiest sources and this is from the social networking sites. Find your friends or find other hub writers there and follow them, and put your hubs on these sites. get online and on to StumbleUpon if you haven't done so already. I have stumbled a huge number of high quality hubs which have have shared-- and I have been the first on this social networking site to do so! This is a huge loss-- what to increase traffic? Well, off to a social networking site.
I can't stress how critical that is if you hope to make some sort of money... it is time consuming, and boring, but it is a key to my success with this program-- thus far. There are cons to this program and you do need to take note.
So What Are the Pros?
So the Pros of the pros of the Hubpages Ads Program.
Yes, you do make money-- if you get people coming and reading: The key to making money with this particular program is getting people to come and read your work. In other words, you do not need to worry about all of the keyword tools or search engines if you choose, you simply need to get people to follow you and look at your work on the various social networking sites. ( Publishing hubs on a regular basis helps as well, but do not spam!)
If you are not on any social networking site, or you are but are not active, get on to Stumble Upon, or get active on a social networking site. This is a must. The traffic there is key to getting more out of your published works.
Money comes of a more frequent basis: Now, when I say this I am referring to the fact that if you are committed to writing a high quality hub, that lets your readers comment and share with their friends, you will find that the money which you get adds up quickly. To put it this way, if you get say 1.70 dollars per day you will get a payout per month. Now, you'll need a high number of impressions, but this can be done. With Google AdSense, you generally get paid when you get a click. (which means that your total money needs to be about $3.33 per day of finalized earnings to make a monthly payout.)
And The Cons?
If your traffic is low... the money you get will be low (sort of): Now, I have had hubs which are on publishing which I have had around for a while, and when they get traffic, they make money. I have hubs on making money, which do get steady traffic, but... they do not make as much in terms of CPM (cost per mille) than my publishing or writing hubs.
I made a comparison and when I was writing about publishing and the mistakes people make while self-publishing, this has a better cost per mille-- also known as cost per thousand impressions, than my hubs which are on: religion, writing, increasing traffic, and making money ( in descending order.) I think it is because some hubs are a more niche market-- therefore make a better cost per thousand impression.
You need Links: This goes back to getting traffic, so the more traffic you get the more money per day you will make, however this means linking, and I have found that going and adding my works to Redgage, StumbleUpon, Digg, and many of the "lower quality" websites out there has helped with traffic, but at the same time it is linking, and this does take time. Again, not every published hub will make a high CPM, so know what works for you.
Yes you will need to worry about keywords, and using the keyword tools if you want to make money with Google AdSense, but at the same time, you need to get your links to your hubs.
What Else? What About Google AdSense
Know this about Google AdSense Affiliate Program: Your AdSense earnings will go down-- by quite a bit since you will have only one space for your AdSense ads box. This much I say as my hubpages earnings took a double hit what with the panda update and my being in the first wave of the Ads program, I did do an experiment. (The program started for my account over the first couple days of March, 2011.)
I took part of April off to compare what my earnings were for AdSense to Ads Program. Now I only compared hubpages to hubpages since this is what you need to compare it to. My hubpages traffic dropped a lot, but this was fixed by going to work on improving a lot of my hubs which needed it, and adding links.
After that fix up which took most of march and April, my earnings with AdSense and the Ads program has changed a bit, I've found that the Ads Program does well, but when someone does click on a Google AdSense, then hands down AdSense wins for that day. When I do not get clicks on my hubpages-- based on Google AdSense-- then the Ads Program is a welcome bit of money.
For some this loss of AdSense income does not make up the difference with the earnings you get from anywhere else. So, again my advice is to get a few good quality hubs up and figure out which niche works best.
Hubpages Ads Program or...
See results without votingSo What Will You Do?
For my own view, I think I shall stay with the Hubpages Ads Program for a while longer, but again since it is impression based you will need to think not of getting search engine traffic, but rather any sort of traffic. The more the better. Which is why linking is so important.
As for Google AdSense, I am working with excerptz, Bukisa, and other websites to maintain my AdSense earnings, and to keep my traffic moving. So, for me to have less of the huge highs and lows on my Google AdSense earnings based upon hubpages is a huge thing which makes a difference with my work else where.
So what will you do? if you are conserned with a drop in Adsense revenues, my advice is to not worry too much about the Hubpages Ads Program, but if you are looking for a means to make money with the traffic you have, you should be a part of this program.

Hubpages ad program is cool as you get earnings but Google Adsense sucks for me at this time ..I always chose hubpages ad program .Thanks for your nice hub
Thanks for the hub! I've noticed I've made nothing with Google but I get at least a few cents a day with the Ad Program. I wasn't sure what the difference between them was or how they each worked. This was a great hub!
Rebecca, Thanks for responding back.. I was reading over what I wrote to you and I meant to say I stopped posting hubs to facebook.. not ads, as I wrote. Mix up of words, sorry. I'm scared to post and share my hubs on facebook for fear my family and friends will come to my hub and click on an AdSense ad and then me get in trouble for click fraud- I was afraid maybe that's why they disabled my account even though I told friends and family NOT to click on ads in the hubs. I would love to be able to post hubs to facebook but just too scared because of that fact. I do sometimes share my hubs on Twitter because my few followers are not close friends or relatives. Anyway, thanks for replying to my comment! Best wishes to you.
It is interesting to learn the differences between AdSense and HubPages programs and how they each earn money for us but I have a bit of an issue with AdSense being so strict in their rules that I've stopped posting ads to facebook etc..for fear that my friends and family will click on AdSense ads and as a result getting my account disabled because of people I know personally clicking on my ads. Unless I understood wrong, they can count this as click fraud. As much as I wish that I could post my hubs on facebook etc., especially now learning that it helps with the HP ad program,I'm just too scared. I've already had my go around with AdSense and being disabled though they eventually reinstated my account. Anyway, this is a really great and informative hub. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting point. I haven't used a charter for this before, but I will think of it that way in the future. Thanks for the idea!
absolutely...must tell you though Rebecca heliu are stuffed shirts :) they do NOT appreciate my twisted sense of humour :( just got my first article rejected...on the fly known as the Love Bug...if you live in the South you will understand there is no way one can write a APA stye article on this horrible gross smelly disgusting plague that comes twice a year!! oh well/watch for it here soon on HP :)
Good stuff, every little bit helps. Networking and link sharing is key to any venture. Thanks for sharing your insights.
I finally found out its really cool plus found Bukisa where I can write even more articles! too cool!! thank you Rebecca as always!!
I have not decided whether I should join this HP Ad program or not because I could not bring adequate traffic on my HP. Anyhow your ideas are great and I shall out. thanks for sharing.
Rebecca, great advice and information. My HP ads are paying off better than google. As for Stumble Upon, I have checkede it out, joined and getting setteled in. Up and useful.
cool!!! thanks Rebecca
oh wow then I am glad I did it!!
I thank you becca
I am part of both programs :)
now how do I get my $ out of paypal account? hmmm better research that eh?
love to you! barbara b
I did the adsense add button and was amazed to see a definite increase on a daily basis! but what I am unsure of is the payout...it will go to my paypal acount so whats the pyout amount $100 like HP/Google?
that I dont understand can you explain it Rebecca
and I am not even sure if the +1 add button is the same as google vs HP adsense but it is isnt it? I dont know, you know me,takes a bit to sink in sometimes :)
as usual your work is well written and totally understandable and I so 'preciate you :)
very usefull info thanks for sharing
I am still a newbie here, so your comments on the different programs are much appreciated.
Ok thanks becca :)
Thank you Rebecca so in other words you're saying it should be safe to post it here without a copywright but it is a risk?
Very informative hub. It really helped me
Thanks Rebecca. Rated it Useful
Rebecca! I wish I had a dollar for everytime I was told about having "potential". (smile, laugh) I would be rich! I am so glad you are here to help us out! Take care..
That's me above
Hey I wanted to post chapters of my novel here on hubpages but im afraid of someone stealing my story. Should I copyright it first before I post it here?
I am inspired to try my own writting now. thanks for the info
Great hub and very well explained. I am not really for social networking type but I guess I have to try it as well because it might really help.
hii thanks so much for sharing, my only problem now is to be able to build a steady traffic which is quite tough since i'm quite lazy online and not really into social networkings. i tend to forget about them. i had stumbleupon but it's been so long since i last used it, i forgot how it works now-_- but thanks for pointing out the differences. i'm using both, figured since my google adsense isn't going that well anyway, it doesn't hurt to have both hehe since they're both passive income.
with this program what would be the best idea-- social networking or keyword research or both?
Hub pages are great when you want to draw traffic. I think the ad program will bring in good traffic. http://www.micocrane.com/
I am new here, and I am currently using Adsense. I would like to use both but I am unsure how much i can trust the HP to be honest. Can anybody tell me how secure my information will be if i send in the w9?
Nice write up. These tips are very nice for newbie users like myself. :) I love reading and learning more about hubs.
Thank you
This is a very good Hub ..I always appreciate more advice for my Hubs, Thanks again.
Nice hub. I had no idea how this stuff worked. I'm still kinda new to the hub thing. Anyways, this really helped me out. I'm glad you posted it. Thumbs up!
Thanks Rebecca for sharing this valuable information with us. I am kind of new on all this and your advises are very useful for me.
I think should get the big flow in the league can earn commissions from advertisements
I'm new and this was very valuable information
Thanks for sharing, Rebecca. I will try to make use of these tips. I have not been successful using Amazon and Google Adsense. Guess I just do not have the time that's needed for all the reading to help me get it right.
A really good hub that has informed me well and given me the motivation to continue. Thankyou.
Such an excellent analysis it is !!Thanks for sharing us .
Thanks for this useful and informative hub. I´ll bookmark this for later use as I´m not applying yet for google adsense and hubpages ads. I have read somewhere here in HP that I have to be 6 months member before I´ll be accepted. So I´ll just be patient and write more quality hubs. Anyway I´m here in HP to enjoy writing. Thanks again.
Thanks for an excellent analysis. Looking forward to more from you.
I just started to venture on this. This was through the encouragement of friend.
Thank you for the insights from this topic.
Thanks for the tips-learning and earning sounds great to me. Very Imformative Hub!
Informative hub Rebecca. I think I'm making more with hub ad program - but we're still only talking a few cents a day.
Thanks Rebecca, you have written a very good hub with a lot of helpful info. I like the hubpage ad program but am making an average of 10 cents a day. Seems like it's steadily increasing though. I think all I really need is patience :)
Thanks for the information. I have a question. My AdSense account is not yet approved though I made repeated attempt. Can I take part in the HubPage Ad program?
Great Article well thought out voted up and useful..
SM
Thank you so much for this Hub - it is the best analysis I have seen of the pros and cons of the new programme.
We have not signed up to the new programme. Our income dipped dramatically when the new AdSense calculation was introduced. We have done a bit of work and our income has gone back up. I think if we stick to our current strategy we will do better than if we added the new HubPages programme.
I would not have understood this without your hub!
I've rated this hub 'up'.
Rebecca, this is interesting. I turned off HP ads for a week and adjusted the levels on Google Adsense as one of your hubs suggested we try. In the past couple of days my website has had a traffic report of 70 referrals from Hubpages. This is a first. Normally I would get maybe 2? What do you think? Anything to do with the adjustments I've made?
an excellent analytical assessment! it clarified what I had been thinking, so nicely too! Part of the problem when you have low traffic is serving two masters- the adsense will take forever to reach payout, but at the moment HP is taking a little longer than anticipated. At least though we can play around with it- perhaps wait til paid off HP then switch it off on adsense- it is a moveable item which is great news to us all. I think once the site bounces back (which it will) the HP will be a nice little earner for those like me with lower traffic levels.
Thanks for this enlightenment
very interesting.. thanks for the information.
Hi, thanks a lot! I have a question, if I don't use adsense and just Hubpage ad, is the impression doubled?
Thanks
Great insight. I learned a lot from this Hub.
Thanks Rebecca for this info I am new at this whole trying to make money on articals I appreciate the tips!
Do appreciate your interest in sharing the difference between the two:)
I think I'll stick to google adsense but thanks for all your advice!
Thanks for the interesting hub, Becca. Here is my vote FOR the HP Adwords program. So far, so good.
Great article! For someone who's new to Adsense altogether and thinking of treating Hubpages more as a hobby that generates (probably SMALL) passive income, do you recommend also joining Excerptz for additional Adsense earnings, or jumping straight into just HP Ad Program and trying to generate any traffic?
I have noticed a drop in my adsense, but then again, I wasn't really getting an overabudent amount of clicks. I am still building. However, now I do have both on my page, I do know that my Hubpages Ads are doing amazing. At least comparing the two from the begining. I believe it took me almost 3 months with adsense to make what I have made in just a couple weeks with the new program.
Appreciate your lists of pros and cons for the HP ad program and the reminder to network, network, network!
VERY helpful advice. I see I need to get back to using StumbleUpon, which I've not been back to for a while :). Thanks for this!
I am just now learning about how to link and use the underlink feature. I have noticed that some of my hubs get better traffic than others. I like to make sure all my hubs have something useful and encouraging in them. I enjoy the revenues that I do get. I really enjoy more the feedback and growing as a writer. This is priceless for me and the reason I keep writing! I voted this up~
I did that too! Got to learn more about Stumbleupon, too.
Thanks Rebecca for sharing this great hub with us.
I am bookmarking for easy future referance.
Take care
Eiddwen.
Thanks. This was very useful. I didn't know that the program works on impressions but I have seen that it does work although my earnings have been minimal so far.
Thanks for these tips! I have both and have given up figuring out what way would be the better money maker. I am leaning toward the HP adsense since most of my traffic comes from HP. Great tips! Thanks again and voted up!
What makes Stumbleupon more traffic-increasing than Facebook? I am not at all familiar with Stumbleupon.
I may turn off Hub ads soon to try it with just adsense.
Great hub, BTW. Voted useful.
Very nicely done. :) Thumbs up! :) I have turned off HP Ads Program for this month, to gauge where my adsense earnings are to end. My HP Ads Program wasn't great, simply due to the fact that I wasn't driving much traffic. I understood that, but Adsense was almost non-existent with it on. So, I make more on Adsense than HP's Ad Program. Thank you for a wonderful article. :)
Hi Rebecca, as usual another very useful hub. Other hubbers have also mentioned the loss in Google ad revenue since the Hubpages program began. These same hubbers have also done the same experiment for a month or so and compared the findings. I haven't tested my waters yet.
Have a nice day
Tammy
Thank you, Rebecca, for another very helpful hub.
Thanks for this Rebecca. Like Marie, I was in the first wave, and I can see how the HubPages scheme, on paper, should benefit me. It hasn't happened yet, but I live in hope!
Good and timely hub which I shall digest some more if I can get over the repetition in the title! Dear, the last words, "...of this Program" are needless and repetitious.
It would read better with just one use of "program," Much more pithy...Don't you agree?
The Perfectionist (Ha!) Bob
Very good information Rebecca! I have both and was part of the first wave of the Hubpages Ad program. You made it clearer for me how this program works.
Voted up!
Thanks Rebecca. Very useful hub. Great advice and encouragement. Rated it useful
Getting steady income with HP ads is like a passive income as opposed to the rare clicks in AdSense. Rebecca, your writing is great!!
I'm using both. My traffic is nothing to write home about even before Google Panda. For the past couple of years my ad sense ads jumped around from lower than a dollar up to eight dollars a month.
Right now I'm about even with both programs. With Ad Sense you never know if or when you will get a click. With Hub Page ads, I can see the daily cents building up.
I figure with more quality hubs, hopefully ones that people will be interested in, and learning more about SEO, key words, and networking sites that the traffic will build.
Personally, I finally found out how to get followers on twitter. I didn't know you could get a following on stumble upon. I'll have to look into some of the other networking places.
Thanks for your hub.
I am still undecided as to whether or not to join HP Ads. However, my plan now would be to increase my traffic first before joining HP Ads. Nice tips in this hub!
Thanks for this hub Rebecca--yes, I'm making a bit of money with Hubpages Ad Program since I've joined.
Thanks Rebecca. I'm using both programs and was aware (more or less!) of the differences, but hadn't worked out the implications those differences made to traffic driving strategies. Thanks for doing it for me :)

amithak-- this is true, you do not get as much with AdSense, but for teh most part it's the difference between one and another, if you are not making much on AdSense, then you need the Hubs program and learn how to increase your traffic.
