Fix It 101: What is Wrong With My Hubs?
75I've got Great Writing... What is wrong with my hub?
I think the biggest question that most new hubbers ask is how does my hub score work for or against me? I think the better question is how can I make a hub that will get both traffic and, some good comments. Yes, I understand that for some, writing hubs is all about making money or suggesting how to make it better. Money is one thing, but even if you have a great idea of Google AdSense or of Amazon or eBay, if your hub doesn't have a good score and won't get traffic what is all that knowledge good for?
This is a business where making money comes from traffic and traffic comes from different sources, and presentation and content are a must. The better it is, the more likely you will find some money, and a better hub score.
That is fine, but what about the new people?
It isn't easy to get started in hub pages and make a lot of money either though eBay or Google AdSense or Amazon, and it's harder still if you don't understand the basics of the hub metrics and the stats that go with it. If you don't understand the basics of a hub score, well, here's a basic 101.
Don't Think of This as A Blog Post
It's not Quite like Blogging, or beginning a blog, but it's close. Here's the main points:
It shouldn't be short like a blog, in my experience people who read your hub will be willing to read more and for longer periods of time, they will also be more forgiving. If for example you write a blog post that is say 1,000 words long, then it is too long. On a hub that is okay, in fact that would be about the average word count to aim for once you have a following of fans and of supporters. You need to make certain that your presentation is professional and business like, as you need to think of a hub as a mini website.
Understand how the hub scores mean to you is a big thing. Unlike on a blog where visitors won't return, or even comment, people will speak with their buttons, they can rate your blog, they can send it to Digg or Stumble Upon, they can comment on it, they can bookmark it. They can even become a fan. So content is a must, and so is editing ever so often.
Yes, I know you can add all of these to your blog, but still. It doesn't explain a hub score. In the most basic sense you want a hub to be scored between 65- 100 anything lower, don't publish it. That's the big difference you can see how it will effect your hub score long before you publish a hub.
The other thing is this: You write a hub and you network this hub, much like a marketing plan, and then you leave it alone. It isn't a blog where you add more and more to it. This will be good for the next step.

Relationship with your Readers: Comment back on your hub, people will see it as a link on your profile, and they will also know that you do care about them. I know that sometimes it is hard to do this, I can get 15 comments at once, but try to do this as best you can. I also try to fan people who have made exceptional comments on my hubs, and try to mention them. (Duchess O'Blunt, Scott.Life, Mark Knowles, Creativeone59)
The other thing is tell them that you are going to help them, if it's a really good hub comment on it, and tell them they did a good job, Not just the garden variety of "good hub" but something that stood out for you, or that you're going to share it in teh Social networking sites. ( Digg, Stumble Upon all under the "share It" link at the bottom of each hub)
Improve Your Hubs: Simple, check spelling and content, and title, if the title is great but doesn't relate to your hub, then don't expect people to stay, I know sometimes a great title requires some thought, but work on it.
Reading some great hubs helps as well. Bookmark a few. Don't make them too short, as it won't help you in the long run, but also, not too long, about 500-1000 words.
Understand You Hub Scores: This is simple the hub is rated from 1-100 and with 100 being the best we'd all like to aim for that. Basically the hub will begin at about 40-60 as a score (the green number) you want that number high. The higher the number the more likely it will be seen in other parts of hub pages.
I try to aim that my newly published hubs are about 60 or more. I tend to leave them for a day and go back making sure it's done well. It's easy to publish a hub, but patience to make it good, well that is often hard to come by. we like to have fans, and a readership and all of that, but I always ask.
"why does a reader need this?"
If the content is original, the score will be higher, but it's all up to you to edit it, and to make the content interesting.
Okay.. So What's Important?
See results without votingSo, to recap, you want to write some great content and interact with the readers who comment and become an active participant of hub pages. Comment on other's hubs, and take the time to mention other on your hubs. This is a community of writers and business people and hobby writers, and we all have different needs, so think like a business and have something for everyone.
Just remember, once it's published it's in the hands of people who read it, but the higher you get the hub score before publishing it, the more likely people will take a look. If they know you interact with them they are more likely to read and comment. Take as much time as you need reread it, and above all, have some fun.
To your success.

Great hub. You make it sound so easy!
Great writing style. Laid back and yet informative without being critical. Also love the picture of old writing instruments.
Thanks! Great info.
Excellent tips Rebecca, I knew I would learn a lot joining your fan club.
Rebecca, you wrote this a long time ago, yet still so relevant and useful. You've stood the test of time! LOL I'm your audience. A true neophyte. To be honest I'm just writing "my story" because it's something I CAN do for myself. In the long run if I can make a dime that'll be GREAT too!
Wait. I just saw how many followers you have!! Oh my! I have 13. I think I may be upset. (smile)
A brand new newbie here and may I say that you are very helpful. I am trying to get as much advice before I write my first hub (since I am waiting for Google AdServe to approve me). I also figure it will help if I jot down thoughts as I get them hoping to make worthy hubs.
Thanks for the tips , Mine are between 60-73 but have only had one comment so am trying to improve them
Rebecca E. -- Thank you for the great info. I've been on Hub Pages for a short period of time, but I've been nervous about writing more hubs because my traffic is low. This article will really help me improve. Thank you!
Thank you so much for all this great information. Here you said 65 or above is a good hub score? In another one you said 60. Now, being more experienced, which would you agree with?
Great Hub! The information was very helpful.
I just learned how to delete and add keywords. The only keyword that was in bold was 'content'. How can I get better keywords? I have used word-cloud to do this but is there a HubPages listing of keywords?
Very useful info. One question - how to get a HNub score up before publishing?
Love and peace
Tony
Rebecca, I hope I am not commenting the wrong thing on your hub but somewhere I noticed you mention that social bookmarking sites are great for traffic...I however cannot seem to get my submissions noticed...do you have a hub for explaining how to get people to follow you on these sites and actually start "digg-ing" your pages? :)
wow so much info and so much to think about I hope I will manage! I sure thing bookmarked your page and will come back couple of times a day till I have the hang of this... I just joined and my first wee little hub has 52 scores and I was soooo happy that I even managed to get it online LOL anyway thanks a bunch for sharing this value information. :)
Good info for newcomers to Hubpages!
Thank you sharing your wisdom! I love sharing mine and I just received some great insight here. Best Regards, Anna
Thanks for your fanmail. I have actually registered up to a year ago, I recently changed my username, thanks all the same for being my first fan here. I was just writing a hub on resuscitating hubs when i stumbled on your fix it range of hubs. Hey! Don't go thinking I was copycatting you okay, I was getting discouraged by no traffic and got inspired to write on that. Your hubs are as refreshing as a rich soup, there is always something to learn whichever dimension you twist it to. Lots of thanks, I am wishing that I can push away your number one fan from the line so that i can take his/her place. Smile!
Becca...
You were the first hubber I ever read when I started 10 days ago. I like your hubs because they provide some very interesting and useful info. I have just twitted this one!
Keep in touch!

Thank you for the good information about publishing hubs. I will try to implement the tips to raise my score!
Thanks for the tips! I've been wondering about a bit of this stuff.
As always, you have provided some good, solid information here. I haven't been on HP much in the past few months, as I've gone back to school part-time in a Creative Writing program, but whenever I do want to practice my craft, I always come back to Hubpages. I particularly like how you give the basics of the scoring system and writing a good blog on HP. It's always been something of a mystery to me!
You've always amazed me of your hubs. They are really helpful to hubbers especialy the newbies. Thanks for sharing.
I am new at hubb this hub helps me a lot thanks for sharing
THANKS FOR SHARING this tips,
Learned little more or the dead thoughts wake-up in my mind.
I also learned that putting others in your hub might afford me some appreciative friendships here-super good tip. So, this is definitely worth saving and commenting on
do you think my website is good or should i add more, it has 1300 words
Thanks for sharing this valuable info. Just the sheer number of comments from this hub speaks volumns on how well established you are as a talented writer. For me, it is time to be quiet and take notes. Thumbs up!
This is very good advice Rebecca E, I'm going to recommend this as a must read.
Excellent information for a newbie hubster like me! Thanks alot!
Thanks for sharing, very helpful indeed. Now I am understanding a little more about my hubs.
Thanks for the heads up. Now I know what to look for.
I won't say good hub.
Anyhow may I say this hub is really worth reading? :)
I'm here only by a couple of week and I've found "newbie" hubs priceless. Especially the ones explaining the benefits of interaction. I've already seen they say the truth. Beside that, from a personal point of view I really love to talk with others writers, there's always something more to learn. The only thing I regret is that I don't always remember to check where I made comments and maybe this seems impolite, but there is so much to read that's hard to go back. But having the chance to interact with readers is priceless, and they are always so nice that they don't make comments on my English. :)
Thanks for the insightful information.
Newbie question: How do you find out your score before you publish?
Excelent tips =)
fantastic
very interesting hub, as you call it, so what are keywords?
Thanks, for the information. I'm going to use it now.
Very useful. Thank you.
I've only been on for 2 weeks but have been wondering about this all the time- thanks for the info- here's to hoping I get some traffic/fans soon
I am in the process of trying to make adjustments on some of my hubs to better the hub scoring and increase traffic. You have great tips to share and just know its appreciated !!!!
I wonder why delete... wouldn't it be easier to fix it up?
Hmmm! Just edging my way about and looking for pit falls before doing something regrettable.
Thanks for the helpful Hub, if indeed that is what they are called? It looks like I need one or two improvements before I post a Hub.
I’ll carry on mooching for some more goodies before committing as I haven’t found the green numbers yet.
Regards.
Howard

I'm new, and this is very helpful.
as a new hub writer i find this type of hub helpful, thanks for the tips on getting a good score before publishing
Thank you, Rebecca E. I just started a hub page Saturday, and yesterday I was thinking how stupid that was. Last night my partner offered me some great encouragement so today I'm back.
You offered so much! And the questions you answered for me, wow, just thank you. I am a writer wanna-be, and although I do have a publisher interested in one of my titles, I wasn't sure this medium was for me. Single-hubbedly you changed that for me.
Thank you.
Blessings of peace, love, joy and all the good stuff.
once again this is a great hub. I am a newbie. You keep it very simple. I like that. I am now a fan !
good to know the tips.tq
Good information and plenty of reminders on what to do with your Hubs and how to relate to other Hub writers.

This is about the third time I've come back to this one. Figured it'd be nice for you to know it's been useful! :)
This was a very informative read. Thanks so much for the valuable information.
Having good inbound links that drive traffic to your hub is another great way to keep your Hubscore high.
Rebecca,
Thanks for sharing your experience; it's of great help or a new comer like me.
Great hub for a beginner, I always publish my hubs as soon as I've finished writing them but I might wait a day or two and revisit before publishing them. thanks for the info.
Encouraging. I've been discouraged because I've rarely gotten comments on my hubs (11 comments since June), but I'll keep plugging away! I know it's not the comments that count, but it helps :). Thanks for the info!
As usual great hub Rebecca E. I am new here and you are where I go to to learn the ropes. Thank you! I have been having good luck with stubmledupon so consider this hub stumbled!
I didn't know this. Thank you!
Being so new to this Hub publishing world makes one cringe before moving forward. Your information gave me direction. I know that my hesitation was a good thing-since research and being well prepared is important. I hope I will have something going here soon.
