Which Part of Quality and, Afterwards Money, Don't We Understand? (How To Write A Fine Hub or a Quality Hub)
73Money Is One Thing--- So is Quality
A writer must consider quality content above all else, but they also must consider that when they publish online, they will need to make money with whatever content they have written. Some Internet marketers will suggest using a keyword research tool, but if your content is poor, it will not matter long term. I've had my share of bad writing, and have had my share of go back and fix it up for the greater good of the rest of my work-- but it's not to fix up keywords!
There is one thing which I can say with pride, never for one second have I not written and published a article or on online writing sites specifically for money. Now before you all come and complain that everyone needs money-- yes I agree you need to make money to justify your writing and your publishing. This is online work. What I am talking about is something I like to call writing a fine hub. By this you need to research your topic and then work on editing and then worry about money.
You also have to deal with the Google search engine and they have made changes which means that-- big surprise here-- quality counts for something. Which might be why everyone talks about making money...
Writing is Communication
Ever read a suspect article on the Internet? I've noticed this more and more, and the fact is that over time, the quality seems to lack something-- say a style, a communication. Something that makes you want to come back and read more.
It sounds rather like this "I use X product which is is great for (insert long tail keyword here) and I want you to try it out" This can go on for about 800 words, and they are writing, yes, but what they are really trying to do is sell you something that they have a stake in.
Not that this is a bad thing, we are all here to sell something and to make money at it, but this is not selling this is blatant irresponsible marketing. Now, understand that I am not bashing the people who are Internet marketers, but rather the ones who do not share value over time, there are plenty of Internet marketers who offer value to their readers and are not writers but they are communicating.
They are writing-- they might not like writing but they do this, and, they do it well. They publish quality, useful work.
Quality and Knowledge
If you were to read something that grabs your attention what would the key to the "grabbing" part be? Would you be interested in the product if it wasn't so blatantly promoted, or would you be willing to comment? This is something that I think is lost on many people who are trying to make a quick dollar.
You have to know your quality product and you also need to know who your competitors are and what they have to offer, but again, assume that people are knowledgeable and will look into fact and figures-- of your work. It doesn't take much to put up a website. In fact there are millions of blogs and websites which are up and running each day.
I am not suggesting you only write what you know, but write with quality with whatever you are writing on, and about. Your readers are smart, and they are going to tell you off in more ways than one.
Most can ask why would you write a blog and run a website and then write on as many online writing websites as possible? Some of it has to do with diversification--getting and adding links to your work, but the rest is more complex.
Of All Things Google
The search engines are a big part of the Internet world. People use them to find information, and for the most part quality information. They might go to a website by using Google and then they might click on an ad which is run by Google AdSense, which another website owner put together using Google AdWords. This might lead on to believe that the Internet revolves around all things Google.
Not quite, wait a second.
There are also just as many social networking sites out there. In fact many of them can get you traffic to your work. The point is that at the moment not many people think of them, they increase traffic, sometimes by a lot. The reason for this is simple-- They do get you traffic, but the general consensus is that if you wish to make money with Google AdSense you need search engines to find you. The biggest search engine, in terms of traffic and money, is Google. The next ones are; Yahoo and Bing.
There are other smaller search engines, but the key to publishing online is to focus on what works well, and what will earn you the most over a long period of time, so that you don't have to worry. This is to build a platform, but also to think of long term things (such as publishing a book)
So why don't people use social networking sites? Why are they hung up on making money and getting traffic?
Because we online writers want to have our work seen by others and then we want to prove to others (doubting friends and families) that this is something that you can make a living off of. Which leads back to the problem, you need traffic to click on an ad and you need more traffic to make certain that this happens... and the search engine of the day is Google. which means you focus your keywords and SEO on Google.
But Money is Down, and Google Hates Me!
No Google doesn't hate you--- Google doesn't care about you. Sorry, the search engines are a huge place and you have only one person to answer to-- your readers.
Making money is about highs, but more importantly it is about lows, what you do when the money stops coming in. Yes there was an update, and frankly there was an update in 2008, and many in between.
It is like a gold rush, if you provide quality, and make sure that you are driven to improve the quality, then afterwards you will make money. Now, if you are looking for a timeline to do this, try my experience.
(Read this carefully!) I have written on the Internet since 2007. Now that is 4 years, and my oldest blog has been up since 2008. Would you like to know when I began to get search engine traffic to my blogs?
The middle of 2010.
Now, I did make money before 2010, but I didn't have search engine traffic the way I have now, and the point is that I have written on my blogs, and have a website and just about everything else to make certain that the money I make come reasonably steady. I had social networking traffic and traffic from the article directories, and from my online writing, and guest blogging.
So, no, if your money is down, Google doesn't hate you it simply does not care. It is a business like yours. Except that now they are (at least they say) taking quality seriously. Which means that so should you.

So What Don't We Understand?
In the long run I think that with publishing on writing sites we don't understand how long it actually takes to make money. I think we don't understand that not everyone "makes it." I think we understand that there is money to be "had" but we don't understand that for the money to come you have to think long-term and quality.
I think we don't understand that you have to be both writer and promoter and Internet marketer to make it in this world. I don't think we understand that even then, the search engines might still hate us (or not give us a break) but what we really want is money.
It is not an easy road to make money online, and because of this, I think people believe that if they cut back on quality, they will make money fast. They might, they might even get more traffic but I believe that they are sacrificing long-term potential for short term gain.
I you don't understand that last part, then I know that you'll be seeing defeats in small victories, and small victories in defeats. Understanding that this is a business-- your business, and not the search engines is key to success.

Thanks for the advice, Becca. I try to have a sense of good quality in my Hubs!
Rebecca E., I couldn't agree with, or respect, the message in this Hub more. A good percentage of people are writing to make money. A year ago, "word" was "the only way" to approach it was by out-SEO-ing everyone else. Now, people have gotten the message/drift that links from social networking are "The Thing", so "everyone" is pushing that approach. It pretty much seems as if, even after Panda, people still remain oblivious to the concept of quality and/or as viewing their writing as their business (and even independent, small, businesses need a long-term plan, vision, etc.).
I now proof read everything before I publish. Spelling and grammar errors are way down, I still use personal experience in about every hub. Most of my work is now broken up and sub titled. My scores were actually better before I started doing this. I am now ranked page one on Yahoo by keywords with two of my hubs in an area that has 1,900,000 hits. I cross checked with Google so know the number is right. Those were grammar and spell checked but not broken up or sub titled.
Ok learned something again. some of mine are too broken up like the one I published today. Off to fix it.
According to hub pages my quality has really gone down hill. My hubs are still being read even the ones that start at 46. Today I learned a new lesson. I used hub pages recommended keywords and flopped. I went back and changed the keywords and will see how it works now.
Well said Rebecca, you couldn't have written a better hub, than this one, as always it's very informative and enlightening. Thanks for sharing. God bless you. creativeone59
beautiful hub
Thank you, I was on hub about 2 yrs ago and just didn't understand much of this, now I came to back and try to sharpen my writing skills amazingly I started to make a little money so now I am trying to make sense of that whole part , your hubs are very helpful
I don't think that people understand quality, they only think about money. When are you expanding your views on making money?
Rebecca, you are a very, very clever lady writing these hubs many times.
You have the right idea. Quality counts. Money will come at some point so don't get worried
hi rebecca- you are so right for the average Joe, the only route is to write quality do what seo stuff they can and wait. I have a ten year plan so hopefully by year 10, I will be able to pay the domestic bills ( fat chance?) there are those who make money instantly but they tend to be affiliate marketteers who spend their lives on the net and dont post without a reason. They have a special skill which sometimes does the quality angle as well- but they are few and far between
Hey Rebecca, great article. I would like your advice on something, or maybe an opinion. I have a blog it has been running for 6 months, I have only really started to put some effort in the last three months if that. Currently I get 100+ visitors a day, is that good or just average?
I ask as I've never had an opinion from a fellow blogger, not just on the views but, if the blog is even any good at all.
According to the powers who are "hubpages" not a single one of my articles should have been published. They recommend that anything which doesn't get a number 65 while you are publishing should just be deleted.
I personally don't care. As long as it is published it's there for anyone interested in what I am saying. There are times when I go in and edit, and have done this with most of my hubs.
The continuing articles of how I was raised were actually requested by a hubber. I have written to increase SEO without really thinking about it.
I try to think in terms of how I would search and use those words. This is really what SEO is about. Getting someone (searching) to your hub, site, or blog.
For my articles on how I was raised I just put it down, life happens how it does. To my way of thinking so should the articles which let the world know how it did.
The one thing I have noticed is as time has progressed, for me a few months writing here, my hubs are being found on search engines and being opened.
thanks for the article, I am pretty confused about the seo thing, I think in most cases there is a definite trade off of quality if I go for rich keyword content.
looking forward for more such hubs.
Great article for people like me who are new to this online writing process. Patience is the key it seems while you hone your writing craft. People think they can just jump in and make money instead of working at it like a job.
A well-written, meaningful article, Becca, but then they usually are when you write them. Well thought out.
Great explanation for the fact that it is a long-term endeavor!
Plain truth written in plain language! Great!
A thought-provoking article here. I am not an Internet marketer, just a freelance writer who enjoys sharing ideas with others. My hope is that, like for you, quality will bear fruit over time.
thanks Rebecca, I think this is one of your best articles. I certainly get the message that we must 'keep on keeping on' and with time the skills and quality develop into more attractive articles appreciated by all, even Google. Voted up and useful and thanks again for your tenacity and interest in others...
Of course success is desirable, but like you it took me awhile to realize it was not going to happen overnight. And that is because I stopped listening to the "gurus" out there that take your money and tell you exactly what to do and it is all wrong. I do appreciate people like yourself that actually tell you what they have done and it didn't work and this is what they do now and it works better. That is real teaching, real help. thank you.
