Writing an article or hub on hubpages is easy, but the biggest issue it seems for many is making money on hubpages. Remeber this, writing an online article is easy, anyone can do this, they simply hit "publish hub" and off you go. The next part... making money online well.... it really means one fine hub at a time!
So, carynwon asked this question on the hub answers and I'd thought I'd answer it, it seems that's what I like to do these days. But it's a question that needs answering a lot these days, you write a hub, and you want to maximize the google AdSense earnings for this hub, but since you've only been on hub pages a few days it's like well, not working, you're simply not making money with google AdSense, or any of your other things for that matter!
As many people have mentioned it takes time and effort and a lot of work. For some hub pages is just a part of the process and for others, it's the very beginning, of course it helps if you know a few things about making money with Google AdSense, but even then sometimes it is hit and miss.
Well there are several things you can do to help yourself:
Increase Traffic to your hubs. This one is probably the most important, and it's first on my list
Write Great Content. A Tie with number one
Add Comments and Links, Important in the long run.
Why these three? well, you'll see
Increase Traffic To Your Hubs:
This one is a biggie, as even if you've got the best hubs on the planet and it should have money making potential with Google, eBay, amazon and whatever else, if no one comes then it's not worth it. A hub needs help, so look down near the comments of your newly published hub, there is a share it button, hit that and you can share it on twitter, on facebook, on your blog and link it to all sorts of places. This is social networking, use it to your advantage for your business. This is important, you need to believe in your hub, still it helps.
I know, I know by now you're saying, but I did all that and nothing works!
Just remember it's a start, and that's what you need, it won't happen overnight. Trust me one this one, but if you try your best to increase traffic something will happen. See, by linking and by putting the hub out to your friends, they will (in theory) go and read your hub. Instant traffic from friendly sources. The other thing about social networking is that it adds an important link where people can find you hub. It's out there.
The idea is that potential traffic is there, and that is the start of making money via Google, or Amazon or eBay. I'd suggest to target your traffic, but to begin with on a blog or a network or on hubs, you need to let as many people as you can know about it, then work on the rest. For some it takes a year and for others it can taken 10 years, but the fact remains that it does take time. Traffic will grow, and you'll get clicks, but for now, think about one thing:

Write Great Content:
If I've said it once I've said it a million times, write great content. I need to know something and i need to know it now, I go to where I can find it. If you've got thecontent on your hub or in your blog or on your website, I'll be going to you. I'll tell others about it. For example Mark Knowles on hubpages knows about google, I refer to him, and I try to mention his name. That's the value of good content.
Part of good content is writing clearly, as in don't ever confuse your reader. Leave the hub for a few if need be.
Why? The content meets my needs. if it's really great I'll do the next thing which helps you.
Last but not least:
Write Comments and Links:
I've said this before read more hubs and comment on them, the more insightful the better, as your name turns blue, a person can then click on your name and... they go to your profile and for me I like to look at a hub or two. This increases the chancesthat I'll comment on something and that is listed on my profile in hub activities, along with a small link, click on that one and you go to that hub. Also have some of your hubs linked on your profile as this will increase traffic to your hubs.
Above all be interactive, this is a business like it or not, and if you write a hub and leave it you will not make money. You will not make money today or ever if you do not take care of your hubs.
So if you comment as best you can to other comments on your hubs you've added a link to your hub. I also add links at the bottom to other's hubs. This is a good way to showcase the community, and often you'll find a good hub or three to read.
The other important thing is to link between your hubs, each link is a valuable way to increase traffic to several of your hubs, and also to increase your money potential. You won't make money today, but you will make money in the long run. Use this to your advantage. Link between your hubs, use social networking as another means to linking. Make sure the site you link to are good. This is all about Traffic and SEO (Search Engine Optimization), the better your linking he more traffic in the long run.
These of course are the first steps, there are many more, but these certainly help. In time it will help you, even if you do one or two hubs, if you remain active on hubpages, you will get something. but even that takes some time. Biggest thing: be active and help your hubs succeed.

I often read hubs and did not comment. It was when I would leave comments that I noticed my traffic rising, thus increasing my income. Great hub.

htodd-- I suspect you could, but it's a bit more complex than that! I mean the blog needs to be good, and linked ect. and a hub needs to be well written.
yeas ,if you have writing skills ,Than you can make a lot of money like starting a blog with Adsense in it and also through hubpages also do lot of reviews etc.
TimArends-- that is the idea, but it need not go that far, linking between hubs is of value, but linking between your own hubs is vital. If the link is not of value, then you will find traffic will die, it is hard to maintain good links.
Whenever I read a hub I try to write a comment. I also recently realized the importance of linking to other hubs recently, when I found out that my hubs can be penalized if I don't link!

I just joined hubpages and I appreciate the more realistic look on using hubpages for publishing articles for revenue share. I am already getting the idea that I need to have more words in my hubs.

James-- for those who think they can make money this is a good thing, but they need to understand the value of time.
You get a lot of comments on your hubs, it's so important that a writer is grounded in reality. I'd say for those who think they can make money, they don't understand traffic or money or writing.
Rubee-- adventures as an administrative assistant? Hmm, but see it's what you know that you can tell, I know nothing about administrative assitants, so I'd certainly be interested in it.
Love your hub! - Very informative. The problem with me is that I just don't know what I'm good at that will make people want to read my hubs. I just enjoy writing. Let's see- I was an administrative assistant for over 20+ years until I got laid off due to the economy. I'm a statistic now. How do I use that to make money using HubPages?

sadekval-- one thing 1000 hubs per month??? that is spam and it will get flagged, and quite possibly get you booted out of hubpages. by the same token you are correct and 2 to 5 hubs won't help unless you've got the following and the keywords.
You can make money on hubpages if you can make sure to write more than 1000 hubs(1000+ words) per month.
You can't expect $$$ in wriitng only 2 or 5 hubs a month!!

AdamGD-- for me I do two things, write what I care about, which is educating people and about writing. For there I go and do a bit of keyword reaseach but nothing mroe nothing trendy or anything like that. As for research I just checkout keywords to see what people are looking for in my field. But it also has to interest me, people can tell. Do that help?
I guess my question would be better asked like this: What steps do you take to figure out what you are going to write about? Do write about trendy things or do you write about what you are interested in or do you do research to see what other people might be interested in? This seems to be where i struggle when starting hubs is why i ask.
AdamGD-- content is something that is a bit harder to explain, but the idea is this content is what you write, so in this case I'll write about "frogs" so my content is about frogs, and I can get fairly detailed on one part, but the idea is that you make it interesting for the reader.
So think about what makes it interesting for you and work on that.
How about content... what are some guidelines for figuring out what to write
Marquis-- excellent point except for one thing, if you give a flat fee, and then over time this aricle doesn't do well, the site will flouder. This makes it harder to make or keep money, which is why a lot of sites use AdSense, they better aricles make some money for the author.... not teh best but better than other options.
The thing which upsets me is the fact that sites do not pay a flat feet for articles. They opt instead to use adsense and other options to not pay up front to authors which I think is wrong.

I have other sites which are also making more and more each month, but I like HubPages as a test zone. Some friends referred me, and they are nearing $1000/mo. from adsense on hubs alone, so it can be done...especially using the tips you have given. Thank you!

Little Princess, I'll give you the range of what I've heard as a rule for writers from nothing a month to upwards of $2000 or more per month, I tell you this with one very serious remark afterwards, the writers who make this money have been writing and learning keywords and adsense for a long while,
an example is the writers of problogger.net, who make a fair bit now, but pointed out that they didn't make much until two years AFTER they began, and they had about 5 different blogs going by this time.

As you point out, there's definitely nothing easy about making money on hubpages. It does make it a whole lot more worthwhile if you enjoy the process though. That much I know. But when the effort is put in, you start to see results. It's a great site and I enjoy writing here.

I do comment on other hubs that I read...but not always. I had not, up to reading your article, thought of a hub comment as a link. Interesting. I do comment on newspaper articles at times. Some of these definitely backlink but others not. Thank you
