Writing To Understand: Basic Terms Used By Writers On Hubpages, in Writing and Money
69The Language and Terminolgy Hubbers Use
Specialk3749 asked this question: what is the jargon we "experienced" hubbers use?" Well it is simply a matter of knowing what hubpages is about, but of course that takes time, and energy, and well time.
So this little hub will explain what people are saying when we are writing hubs and why we write certain things that confuse many new hubpages writers. Now, this will probably improve your hubs, but also improve your understanding of the "writing jargon" on hubpages.
This will also go into a bit of google and why sometimes, people will write something that seems odd, but if you understand google it will be pretty simple to understand. I'll also break it down into some "wide" themes. I hope this will help you improve your hubpages business.
Money Matters Words: Below are a list of words people tend to write when they are referring to all things money and a bit of explanation about them.
Backlinks or Links: When people write I've linked your hub or write about backlinking they are referring to links. Now links is a term found all over the Internet. Now a backlink is a website address found in an article or a hub. This creates traffic to a hub. Traffic means money and the more traffic to different hubs you have, the better the chance to make money.
Ads or AdSense or Google: All of these words refer to what you see on your hub, the Google ads, so when people are writing about Google, they might refer to Google AdSense or the AdSense publishers code you have or whatever, this is simply a way of talking about The things people see on Google.
Affiliate Programs Google AdSense, Amazon, Kontera and eBay are affiliate programs, which means that when other people click on ads or buy something you make money from it. each affiliate programs has Terms of Service, these are contracts and if you break them you will have a hard time making any money.
So these are the "money" things. The biggest topic in terms of making money which I think most people come across is about Google AdSense (hubs on hubpages written about it).
Then there is Traffic Words: Below is a basic list of what people talk about when they refer to traffic.
Social Networking Sites: These are similar to hubpages, where you follow and subscribe to people and build a "network" of people who will come and read the hub you've written. Some of the social networking sites are : Stumble Upon,. FaceBook and Digg. Now when someone says they have "stumbled" you or "dug" you what they mean is they have shared your hub with others outside of hubpages. This is good, but of course takes time and you need to get subscribers.
SEO: This is Search Engine Optimization. I add this to traffic since but optimizing your hub with regards to search engines such as Google, or MSN or Yahoo, you get more traffic. This is the "golden" traffic since often people who come from search engines will click on Google Ads or buy a book from amazon. By doing so you get money from either Google AdSense or Amazon.
Twitter: This is a whole site where you can tell your followers what you've read in 140 character or less. "I've tweeted you hub" comes from this idea. When you read this comment understand that they are using twitter to promote traffic to your hub.
Visitors and Traffic Sources: When people write "I have many traffic sources" what they mean is that when they are in "my account" section their visitors come not only from hubpages but from other places such as social networking sites or search engines.

People and You and Traffic and People: This is an expanded version of traffic.
Followers: Now this is part of hubpages, but it is something you need to think about. Followers refer to the people to receive an email notice that your hubs are published. Some people have a lot of followers, while other have few. The number of followers you have does not mean you will have instant traffic. It simply means people have decided to "follow" the new hubs you've written. This is why adding backlinks are important as new followers won't find you older hubs without backlinks.
Hubs, readers lurkers, traffic: Now this refers to the type of people you get on a particular hub of yours. hub lurkers are the ones who give you traffic but won't comment. Readers are the ones where you know they will come and comment, and then there is the group of traffic, where they have found your hub, and will click on a link to find something else. You'll get all three, so don't worry.
Hubpages: Writing here and publishing hubs also means learning the jargon.
Hubber: This is the person who writes the hub you are reading. Some will say hub writer, but the correct term is hubber, since we are writing on hubpages.
Hubs: This is an article, basically what you are reading right now. This is the thing that you link to and make money (hopefully!) off of.
Capsules: When you are editing or writing a hub, you can design it anyway you like, but the "pieces" you use, photos amazon, eBay, text anything are called capsules. So when someone say use a photo capsule, you go to edit and on the right hand side you will see the words "add more capsules"
Word Count: How many words are on a hub. This is important as as a hub which is too short will be "flagged" as too short. Each hubber has a different idea as to what makes a good word count, so I'll leave that one alone for now.
Flags: This is something you don't want to see, what this means is that your content is found elsewhere on the web, (duplicate) or seems to be spam (write 5 hubs in one day and you'll get the idea...) or copied content. ( This is the big NO DO NOT EVER... basically you are stealing someone else work, and this will get flagged.)
Hub Score: There are two scores your personal score which is on the right of your avatar and the hub score which is different for each hub. This is affected by new hubs, low traffic to hubs and a lot of other things. Something to keep an eye on but not to worry about.
People are Writing and Have Views: This is about commenting and writing on a hub.
Comment Section: Most hubbers have a comment section, some moderate more than others and some are more sensitive, and some well use it as a soapbox. Still this is a valuable resource for all writers it helps them improve but also helps them interact with others.
Spam: This is a part of commenting and moderation, Now I don't mind people telling me I've made mistakes ( I know I do, thanks) but I also make certain that I don't approve comments which have nothing to do with my hub. So spam, is the comments that lead to another site or have links which are against the terms of service of hubpages or other affiliate programs. This is the important one to check. You can lose your Google AdSense account if the links someone puts on hubs are against their TOS.
Writing Comments: This is something where you need to remember that people all write differently, but I believe that people who are critical of anything might have a point, so it is in taste to delete a nasty comment, except in one case, a personal attack is a automatic delete. I am sorry but you can say what you like about a hub, but not about the person who wrote it. So it goes both ways.
Requesting Hubs: This is found in the answers section, so when someone writes a hub that says "answering this request" that is where you find the beginnings of the hubs written. It is the answer you give that become an answer to the hub.
Milestones: A certain point that hubpages will give the rest of the hubpages community that you have hit something special: Forum posts, followers, published hubs, published requests ( as in when you write a hub based on answer-- like this one has done) a certain number of visitors to your hubs, so go to the help section to see when your name will be showcased to the rest of the hubpages world.
Really? That's Cool
See results without votingI hope Specialk3749 this hub has helped you. This is of course not exhaustive, as my hub would be too long!
Still keep up the good work on writing hubs, you will see success. Yes money and traffic are important, but so are the people who write hubs.
Have fun, relax and things will be "old hat" soon enough.
To your success.
