Who Would or Should You Follow When You Are Starting Up Your Online Business?
67A Business, Turned Upside Down
You want to start an online business, and you think you know what you are doing. Only when it comes to making money online, you know nothing. You need to know who to follow, some sort of mentor someone who will mentor you while you are starting up telling you where to go and what will make you money fast. After all in a way it is a get rich quick land online is it not?
You want to make money from several income sources like Google AdSense and your published e-books, and you want success where you can earn passive income-- and the fact is that you are a self-publisher. You can tell yourself that failure is not an option. You will build this business. Somewhere, and somehow it will make money online. You will be a success. Since you are starting up this online business, you do not know how much it will take to make it a success.
So, you begin to look around, take, for example, hubpages there are many writers and marketers here, some have been here for years and have success. They have thousands of followers, and you think that maybe it will help, reading their hubs. They seem to have success, and they talk about things such as SEO and keyword research and building a business but, that's only part of what you need to do.
Internet and Money: Dime a Dozen?
Let us get one thing straight here before we begin-- this is a business, and you are on the Internet to make money. This means that you will have to learn about your business very quickly. This is a world of e commerce, and yet it is harder to get what you want than if you worked in the "real world."
On the Internet there are a lot of self-proclaimed gurus out there. They seem to have what you have. The gold, the fame the riches, the power of the Internet. You are only one person and you need to build a following to make money online. You simply can not go to a website and proclaim that you are a guru when in fact you are not. Only time will help you make the passive income you want to make.
Which is why a lot of people start something and then expect passive income. It is possible to have passive income but it is a snowball effect to get there. You need to work with many websites to promote your work. next you will need to link. This is boring but important.
Is the Internet-- or writing websites a dime a dozen? In a way yes they are. Most people who are writers are there to promote their writing. In other words they use the power of the Internet to build readership to their work, and there are many who will do this, but to rise to the top means thinking long-term.
Keyword Research, Quality and SEO
Now you might want to suggest that it is all about keyword research and SEO, after all you want to rise to the top, and make money fast. It is all about the search engines and the gold mine of traffic that you can get from there (not to mention the fact that you can make money faster with search engines). But think about it for a moment. Is the idea that you simply add enough keywords to your writing that will make you money worth it in the long run?
Quality is key to anything. It is the most powerful thing you can have, a quality hub will outlast a keyword filled hub. Passive Income is some thing which we all want but I have a few tips to help you build both quality and make money with your published hubs.
- Stop worrying about AdSense. While you need to follow a few AdSense tips (don't click on your ads etc) you will need to think long term. AdSense is best viewed as additional income, and something that you look at as the month goes by.
- Keywords are important, but so is quality. You need to give information to your readers that they can then use to improve the money that they make. You also need to be found by the search engines. The more keyword research you do the better understanding you will have as to why certain hubs or websites get more traffic from the search engines.
- Quality and originality are important. So is increasing traffic from the search engines. If you don't have quality hubs, you won't last long or make passive income. You can be a writer who makes money online. Quality is long term thinking combined with some Internet marketing.
Quality or Making Money?
This is where you need to think long term. If you write quality content, where you take care that your work is not stolen, and that you are always improving your content. Information changes constantly online, and what was correct, in terms of making money, will not be in a few months.
If you focus on quality content (read: publishing a fine hub) you will not see as many ups and downs in your traffic as opposed to writing for money. The focus is always quality, but, you should not lose sight of the fact that you need to make money in order to survive.
The idea here is to use teh power of carefully choosen keywords, and a well written informative, fine hub to grab you readers attention. You only have it for so long. This is more true when you get search engine traffic, you need them, and they did something-- information from you. The better you present that information the more likely they will stay and click on an ad or a product that you have to offer.
Quality comes first, your hub needs to be carefully laid out, and written so that you can then focus on increasing traffic to it and to older hubs you have. This is where improving your older hubs plays a big part in driving traffic to all of your quality hubs.
Making money only happens when you have quality hubs, and targeted traffic. Over time this is what will help you get paid for your efforts. Focus not only on your hubs but on your blogs and websites as well. Interlinking them is as important as anything else you might do, as you will need different sources of traffic.
So What About Publisging Why Mention It in Regards To Making Money?
Because no matter what you are doing with your online writing, there comes a time when you will have to hit a button called "publish."
You can be an Internet marketer, or a social networking site lover, but you will have to write and then publish the content before you can make money. It doesn't matter what else you might want but if your work stays there unpublished, no matter how fine a hub you might think you have, it needs to be published.
This of course means that while it should be well written there will always be something to add: a new keyword, a better introduction, a better title which helps you be found by the search engines.
The message is that if you want to make money: write your best and then publish your work online.
Your Business and Your Writing
Is My Business Important?
See results without votingAction Speaks Volumes
One word of advice: action is more important than thinking. You can spend your life thiking about ways to make money online, or ways to improve your writing, but you will need to act on them.
Have a desire to start your business, but do something, a small step each day. Going to Google AdWords, or other keyword researching tools, to do some keyword research is not action-- it is only action if you put them into your website or your hub.
Sitting and commenting on forums, without a hub will not help you with your business, anymore than all the talk of passive income will get you that passive income. Make your mistakes, but learn from them. Start your business....
To your success.

Rebecca thanks for your straight shooting and understandable information. I really appreciate your time and effort in sharing what you know! Grateful!
You have to follow yourself. You have to follow the ones who can prove what they have done works.
I bought one of those crash courses in e-commerce. A hell of a lot of info. It is all comming together for me now. I'm not making any money yet, but I have a few articles out. For now I am content with the learning process convinced I'm on the right track until, I start seeing all the negative feed back about it. Writing, writing, writing, and never making money. It will discourage you along with all of the research and writing. I guess persistence is the key. Your info is helpful.
Thank you very much for writing this. I always learn from you and you still my great teacher. Well done, Rebecca. Nice to see you. Vote it up!

Well written, awesome information.
Thanks for sharing
Well written hub, certainly following your quality standards.
Yes, there are a few things you mention I have to start paying attention. I work online most of my time, yet I spend all time promoting other people and their projects - some I am involved in but still.
Time to start doing it all for myself as well.
Thanks for the great hub, very helpful!
Excellent information as always, Becca, from someone who already 'knows the ropes' and understands the pitfalls.
I haven't made as much money since Panda. I have been writing less so that is part of the reason but I really try to write quality hubs which are time consuming. This is another excellent hub and I always learn something from you. Thanks.
Another, superior hub. Thanks for letting us see 'how you do it' Voted up & useful...
