"The How and Can" in Things to do with Stumble Upon: When You Said " I Stumbled It" What does that mean?(StumbleUpon)

By Rebecca E.

A few days ago I was asked to write a hub about social networking-- or more to the point-- Stumble upon and other sites like it. I could of course, go with the simple explanation which is it is a way to showcase your writing to the world. It is a way to get traffic to you hubs. Not for money or for fame, but for traffic.

But that is really too simple for me. Writers need to understand the fine art of social networking and how to get traffic to their hubs. for now I'll use Stumble Upon as the example partly because I use it more than Digg but also it is simple to to explain.

Just go down to the comments section on any hub... you'll see how to do this. This allows for links to your hub, and also some money potential. Some mind you but some money is better than no money.

There are other ways but they work in the same fashion I'll mention them as well.

Stumble Upon and Digg and Facebook and Emailing to Friends are an easy way to increase Traffic to your hubs.
Stumble Upon and Digg and Facebook and Emailing to Friends are an easy way to increase Traffic to your hubs.

StumbleUpon and Other Social Networking Sites

Stumble Upon:This site is a very easy to use site, and I use it far more than Facebook or Digg, the traffic from it is invaluable and often is easier to track than Digg or Facebook. The reason I like it is that it shows the entire page. It can also show a page of a website or blog.

With Stumble Upon you simply thumb up or thumb down a site when you view it. The other thing i've noticed is that if you do use Stumble Upon a lot, (I'm not a big time user, but still) there are a lot of great sites out there, which you can use in your own hubs, but they also show categories, such as poetry and publishing, and writing.

If you have say 5 hubs and you were to put them on Stumble Upon, you have a chance to have over 9 million people stumble it. Not to mention the back link to your hub. Hubpages also offers the opportunity for other to Stumble Upon your hub as well, another link from their StumbleUpon account.

The biggest benefit is that if five people were to go and "like" you hub" there is a small increase in traffic. The is social networking so the more places you go the more likely you'll have some of your hubs seen by others. The more hubs you have the better but again...

There is a downside people can review and say they don't like it. So it's best if you as the writer of you hub send out the best to Stumble Upon. The fact is someone will see your hub on Stumble Upon and like it and it is only a matter of time.

If you don't have an account with them, you should get one, as it makes it very easy to search the web and send out favorites to others. Now that you know about Stumble Upon, I am going to make a suggestion write in a comment box that you've Stumbled a person great hub, it makes their day trust me.

Facebook, my friends can see a link, but will they come?:  Facebook is wonderful and a lot of fun, people can come and read your status updates and comment on them.  But with Facebook there is also a problem.

You have to go down to the bottom of you hub right by comments and hit share it, then go to Facebook link to add a hub.  Otherwise, you'll get booted out of Facebook.  Now, I have a Facebook page, and I have friends, so I add a link and they will click it  or add the link to their facebook page right?

Wrong.  As much as I love family and friends they won't.  They will not do that.  They might go and read your things, but they won't as a rule of thumb either read your hubs or go to them.  So this is an either they will or mostly likely they won't type link.

It does give you a link, so it is worth your time if you want traffic, and it is a social networking site, so at some point someone will click on it, and comment on it.  It takes longer than Stumble Upon, and it can be a smaller network but one that might get you traffic and money.

This is a published hub you've done so use Facebook, and there are benefits to it.   Publish your work on Facebook but it might not be as good as Stumble Upon or Digg.

Digg, I Dig it but maybe you don't but there is that traffic thing: Digg is in many ways similar to Stumble Upon but I found that it does Traffic spikes, so it is sometimes not as reliable as StumbleUpon, but it's a great indicator of how popular a hub is.  If you publish a hub the goal is to be popular but remember, that isn't the only goal okay?

Digg is also easy to use and has a very large following, and like all the other sites I've mentioned, you can hit the Share It button to get it on each and every hub on hubpages, so don't do just yours, do others and tell them in a comment.  It is good community spirit.  So tell them that you've done that.  As a consequence people can see you in places other than your own hubs.

The traffic that Digg creates is good and this can increase money potential to a hub.  But you have to publish a great hub.  Like Stumble Upon people can say they don't like it, but by and large this isn't the case. At least when you begin.

Digg I find most technology and money sites do very well on Digg, but it takes longer for writing and publishing sites, but over all this is a must site for traffic and other blogs and websites.

Search Engine Optimization For Dummies
Amazon Price: $15.55
List Price: $29.99

Other Share it Sites On hubpages:  These are okay, but really you'll need to work on Facebook and Stumble Upon and Digg to see thebenefits. I can't say I've had much success with them but blog it and others are pretty good, for the links not for the traffic. You need your own blog where you can create links, because like any other social site, you have a mark there.

A link on any of these sites can create more traffic and more traffic can create more promotion and this way people will find your site.  It's important to remember that not only do you promote your own sites but do so as well with others sites, tell them you've shared it.  Write a small review on it, send it out on your Facebook.

It's great community spirit, and besides it's great for you.  I know it takes some time, but in the end, by using these sites wisely, and with restraint, you'll see some success with them.  So go ahead, tell someone you've bookmarked their hub and you've Stumbled Upon it or Digg It, or anything else.

You'll be pleased that you did, since these people might return the favor to you.  Not int eh form of money but in a bit of traffic and some promotion to a hub you like..

LOL about the password thing...we do computer charting, a lot of medications are in an accudose machine, all of our education is done on another web application, and then we have interhospital email and I actually have more to list but I have already gone on too long. I have so many passwords and usernames to remember I get them confused a lot...and sometimes it goes downhill from there.

Very helpful info. Been using stumbleupon for a week or so and I've seen traffic already. Not a anything major, but still good. Consequently I've seen more Google and Yahoo search traffic since using stumble as well.

Thanks Rebecca, I do use these from time to time. Perhaps I should make it routine. You do not mention Mixx which also appears in the 'share it' slot at the bottom of each hub. Although I am a member I have never got it to accept a hub link address yet. Any ideas?

If you identify an article/subject with real broad appeal StumbleUpon can result in some large numbers very quickly!
